Intestinal immune response of Silurus glanis and Barbus barbus naturally infected with Pomphorhynchus laevis (Acanthocephala).

Immunopathological and ultrastructural studies were conducted on the intestine of barbel Barbus barbus and sheatfish Silurus glanis that were naturally infected with the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis. Enteric helminths often cause inflammation of the digestive tract, inducing the recruitment of different types of immune cells at the site of infection. The results of our study clearly demonstrated that mast cells (MC) were the dominant immune cells which occur at the site of inflammation in both hosts. MC were associated with fibroblasts and were found in close proximity to, and inside,

Co-existence of congeneric species of acanthocephala: Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae in eels Anguilla anguilla in Ireland.

A population of eels Anguilla anguilla from Lough Derg, R. Shannon, Ireland, harbouring infections of both Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae was studied over three years. Both parasite species had the same intermediate host and eels appeared to be the only definitive host for A. anguillae. Throughout the whole period, A. lucii was the dominant parasite, was over-dispersed throughout the eel population and most frequently occurred as a single species infection. A. anguillae was far less common, its dispersion was close to random at most times and it almost invariably occurred as a mixed sp

Novel infections of Corynosoma enhydri and Profilicollis sp. (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) identified in sea otters Enhydra lutris.

Infectious disease is a major cause of mortality for sea otters Enhydra lutris, a keystone species of continued concern for conservationists. Parasitic infection has long been identified as a cause of mortality in otters in both Alaska and California, USA. Corynosoma enhydri (Acanthocephala) is the only parasite that uses sea otters as its primary definitive host and is highly prevalent in otter populations; however, it is generally considered unimportant both pathologically and ecologically, although this assumption is based on limited empirical knowledge. Research has instead focused on Prof

Infection pattern of Echinorhynchus salobrensis (Acanthocephala) in congeneric species of piranha from a Neotropical floodplain region.

Acanthocephalans are obligate endoparasites characterised by the presence of a proboscis with hooks, which are used to adhere and perforate the intestinal wall of their hosts. Individuals of Echinorhynchus salobrensis Machado Filho, 1948 have been reported parasitising the piranhas Serrasalmus maculatus Kner and Serrasalmus marginatus Valenciennes in the upper Paraná River floodplain. Serrasalmus marginatus is considered non-native at this site, and its establishment occurred after the closure of the Itaipu Hydroelectric, which flooded a natural geographic barrier that separated two ecoregions

Comparative ultrastructural study of the cuticle of larvae and adults of Centrorhynchus milvus Ward, 1956 (Acanthocephala, Centrorhynchidae).

The cuticle of Centrorhynchus milvus acanthella and cystacanth larvae, obtained from the terrestrial crustacean Porcellionides pruinosus, is roughly 0.2 micron thick. The cuticle of juveniles encysted in toads, paratenic hosts, measures up to 0.5 micron whereas that of adults may exceed 2 microns in thickness. In all cases it is perforated by numerous pores that communicate with the hypoderm. During larval development, the numerous endocytotic vacuoles observed in acanthella 3, 4, and 5 and cystacanths became elongated canals in juveniles and adults. There is no significant ultrastructural mod

The erection of two subgenera for Metarhadinorhynchus Yamaguti, 1959 (Acanthocephala: Isthmosacanthida) with a redescription of Metarhadinorhynchus (Metarhadinorhynchus) indicus in India.

BACKGROUND: Adult Metarhadinorhynchus indicus (Bhattacharya & Banerjee, 2003) Kita, Nitta, Kajihara, 2024 were originally described from Megalaspis cordyla (Linn.) in the Chennai coast, Tamil Nadu, India as Gorgorhynchoides indicus Bhattacharya & Banerjee, 2003. The genus Gorgorhynchoides Cable and Linderoth, 1963 was later synonymized with the genus Metarhadinorhynchus Yamaguti 1959. RESULTS: We accept the synonymies involving 15 species of Gorgorhynchoides transferred to Metarhadinorhynchus. Our recognition of the synonymies is partially resolved with the erection of two subgenera: Metarhad

The cement apparatus of larval and adult Acanthocephalus anguillae (Acanthocephala), with notes on the copulatory cap and origin of gland secretion.

Light and electron microscopy were used to investigate the ultrastructure of the cement apparatus, namely cement glands and cement ducts, of mature specimens of the parasite Acanthocephalus anguillae (Muller, 1780) Luhe, 1911 recovered from the alimentary canal of fish Leuciscus cephalus (Risso, 1826). In addition, the cement apparatus of immature A. anguillae found within the body cavity of the crustacean Asellus aquaticus (L.) was examined. In immature and mature males of Acanthocephalus anguillae, there are six round cement glands and each of them has an outer cytoplasmic layer containing n

Morphological, molecular and histopathological characterization of Plagiorhynchus crassicollis (Acanthocephala: Plagiorhynchidae) from a neotropical shorebird in Patagonia, Argentina.

In this work we report Plagiorhynchus (Plagiorhynchus) crassicollis from Patagonia, Argentina. Specimens were collected from the small intestine of a charadriid shorebird with Neotropical distribution, the Two-banded Plover (Charadrius falklandicus). Both morphological and molecular characterization, plus pathological aspect of this species is provided. Plagiorhynchus (Plagiorhynchus) crassicollis is characterized by having a proboscis with 18-20 longitudinal rows of hooks and 11-14 hooks per row. Sequences of the small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA were ob

Transmission of Corynosoma australe (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) from fishes to South American sea lions Otaria flavescens in Patagonia, Argentina.

Acanthocephalans display a two-host life cycle that involves arthropods as intermediate hosts and vertebrates as definitive hosts. Some species also use paratenic hosts to bridge the trophic gap between both obligatory hosts. However, the relative role of these paratenic hosts in the transmission to definitive hosts has seldom been assessed quantitatively. We report on infection patterns of cystacanths of Corynosoma australe Johnston, 1937 in 20 common teleost species and the Argentine shortfin squid Illex argentinus (Castellanos) from the Patagonian shelf of Argentina. We also explore the rol

Histopathological aspects of the relationship Saimiri sciureus × Prosthenorchis elegans (Acanthocephala) in a preserved environment of an urban rainforest fragment.

Non-human primates are potential hosts for helminths of various phyla, and the presence of these parasites can cause changes in organ morphology and functionality. In this study, we present the alterations induced by the presence of acanthocephalan parasites in the small intestine of a snub-nosed monkey that died in the Bosque Rodrigues Alves, municipality of Belém, Pará state, Brazil. Ten specimens of Saimiri sciureus had their intestines analyzed and the parasites recovered were cleaned, quantified, fixed and observed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and fragments of

Status of Corynosoma (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) based on anatomical, ecological, and phylogenetic evidence, with the erection of Pseudocorynosoma n. gen.

The possession of genital spines has been considered as a key taxonomic trait to differentiate Corynosoma from other genera of the Polymorphidae. However, Corynosoma currently consists of 2 groups of species with clear ecological and morphological divergences: the "marine" group (with ca. 30 species) infects mammals and piscivorous birds in the marine realm, whereas the "freshwater" group (with ca. 7 species) infects waterfowl in continental waters. Species from these groups differ in shape of body and neck, trunk spination, lemnisci length and shape, testes arrangement, and number and shape o

First morphological and molecular characterization of cystacanths of Corynosoma evae Zdzitowiecki, 1984 (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) from Antarctic teleost fishes.

Cystacanths of the polymorphid acanthocephalan Corynosoma evae Zdzitowiecki, 1984 were examined and redescribed based on newly collected material from teleost fishes from coastal waters of the Galindez Island (Argentine Islands, West Antarctica). Detailed morphological data, measurements and photomicrographs, including scanning electron microscopy images, are presented. Our morphological and morphometrical analyses confirmed the validity of C. evae; however, three key characteristics of taxonomic importance (i.e., the number of rows of hooks on the proboscis, and the number and arrangement of

Case report: Intestinal perforation and secondary peritonitis due to Acanthocephala infection in a black-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla).

A case of Acanthocephala infection in a 5-year-old female rehabilitated and released black-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla), which was part of a post-release monitoring program of a pangolin research operation in the Central African Republic, is described. This represents the first report of Acanthocephala infection in this species, which lead to intestinal perforation, secondary peritonitis and ultimately to the death of the animal concerned. It is of relevance to alert the pangolin conservation and research community to a so far unreported cause of death. A case history and necrops

Updated morphological description and molecular analysis of Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) iraqensis (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) from Planiliza abu (Heckel) (Mugilidae) in Iraq.

The original description of Neoechinorhynchus (N.) iraqensis Amin, Al-Sady, Mhaisen, Bassat, 2001, from Planiliza abu (Heckel) in the Euphrates River, Iraq, is updated and completed, for the first time, using ocular microscopy and SEM, despite its repeated discovery by various observers in Iraqi waters. No descriptive accounts were provided in these earlier reports. Structures originally described in line drawings are currently demonstrated considerably more clearly in life-like 3-dimensional forms. New morphological features constituting partial revision are reported herein for the first time

A new definitive host for Moniliformis cestodiformis (Acanthocephala: Moniliformidae): first report of a naturally infected European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus).

European hedgehogs, Erinaceus europaeus (Linnaeus, 1758), are small mammals found in western Europe and also in parts of northern Europe. They can be seen in rural, suburban and urban areas, but are usually found in grassland with edge habitats. These animals are omnivorous and serve as definitive or paratenic hosts for several parasites, including acanthocephalans (phylum Acanthocephala). During necropsy of a European hedgehog, a single adult parasite was collected from the intestinal lumen and preserved in 70% ethanol. After morphological evaluation of the specimen, it was identified as Moni
