Haemaphysalis longicornis (Neumann) is an invasive ixodid tick originating from eastern Asia which recently has become established in the United States. In its native range, this tick can transmit several pathogens to animals and humans, but little is known about its ability to acquire and transmit pathogens native to the United States. Geographic overlap with ticks such as Dermacentor variabilis (Say), a known vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, makes investigation into the interactions between H. longicornis and D. variabilis of interest to the public health community. Previous studies have sho

Mate choice influences levels of inbreeding and genetic diversity in natural populations. Positive assortative mating (PAM), for instance, has been described in Ixodes ricinus L., but this behavior has yet to be investigated in the closely related Ixodes scapularis Say, 1821. By analyzing nine microsatellite loci of 30 females and 30 males removed in copula from hunter-harvested deer specimens at the Savannah River Site (South Carolina) during the hunting season of fall 2010, we found a weak but significant assortative pairing signature in a population that, otherwise, appeared genetically hom

In Argentina it has historically been assumed that Chorioptes bovis is the only species involved in clinical cases of bovine chorioptic mange. The aim of this communication is to present the first formal report based on morphometric studies of C. texanus in Argentina. Mange mites were collected through skin scrapings of areas with superficial dermatitis on adult dairy cows from three dairy farms located in Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Córdoba provinces (Argentina). Clinical lesions were characterized by dermatitis located at the base of the tail and ischiorectal fossa, pruritus with hyperkeratosis

Hemp is rapidly becoming a crop of global agricultural importance, and one of the more serious pests of this crop is hemp russet mite (HRM) Aculops cannabicola (Acari: Eriophyidae). Significant knowledge gaps presently exist regarding critical aspects of pest biology, quantification of crop damage, and efficacy of pesticides. Here we assessed the role of cannabidiol (CBD) on HRM performance, efficacy of sulfur treatments in field trials, and effect of hot water immersion with and without surfactants in reducing HRM counts on hemp cuttings. We found that HRM fecundity was reduced on a high-CBD

Scabies is a parasitic infestation of human and animal skin caused by different strains of the itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared scabies in human as a neglected tropical disease, and today over 200 million people worldwide are affected. The two most commonly reported clinical manifestation of the condition are ordinary (OS) and crusted scabies (CS). CS, which can lead to fatal consequences due to secondary bacterial infections, is mostly observed in immunocompromised subjects but can also, although rarely, be detected in immunocompetent individuals.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus is a three-host tick, a principal vector of Borrelia burgdorferi (s.l.) and one of the main vectors of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. Iceland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean with subpolar oceanic climate. During the past 3-4 decades, average temperature has increased, supporting more favourable conditions for ticks. Reports of I. ricinus have increased in recent years. If these ticks were able to establish in a changing climate, Iceland may face new threats posed by tick-borne diseases.
METHODS: Active field surveillance by tick flagging was conducted a

Dermacentor nuttalli is an epidemiologically important tick in Palearctic Asia which transmits several infectious diseases including tularemia, North Asian tick-borne rickettsiosis, Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. The genetic specificity and phylogeny of D. nuttalli from four geographic localities in Eastern Siberia were characterized using the mitochondrial (mt) 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). Low genetic diversity was observed in the populations of ticks distributed from South Siberia to North China. From 11 detected mt 16S haplotypes, one wa

Among transmissible diseases, vectorial diseases represent a major problem for public health. In the group of acarina, while ticks are the most commonly implicated vectors, other arthropods and notably Dermanyssoidea are also involved in the transmission of pathogenic agents. Since the role of this superfamily is at present largely unknown, we have reviewed the vectorial role of these mites in the appearance, survival and propagation of pathogens. Various authors have shown that Dermanyssoidea are implicated in the transmission of both bacteria (Salmonella, Spirocheta, Rickettsia or Pasteurell

Varroa jacobsoni was first described as a natural ectoparasitic mite of the Eastern honeybee (Apis cerana) throughout Asia. It later switched host to the Western honeybee (A. mellifera) and has now become a serious pest of that bee worldwide. The studies reported here on genotypic, phenotypic and reproductive variation among V. jacobsoni infesting A. cerana throughout Asia demonstrate that V. jacobsoni is a complex of at least two different species. In a new classification V. jacobsoni is here redefined as encompassing nine haplotypes (mites with distinct mtDNA CO-I gene sequences) that infest

The process of oviposition in D. reticulatus was observed and found to be a sequence of exactly coordinated, interlocking events independent of the phase of oviposition. The average period of oviposition in the investigated ticks was 31.6 days at 20 degrees C and 95% relative humidity. The number of eggs deposited on each day increased until reaching a maximum on the fifth day of oviposition and then decreased continuously. As a result, most of the eggs were deposited during the initial phase of oviposition. The total number of eggs was proportional to the ticks' weight replenishment. Egg-layi

Seven of 10 fall-fed female Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman, & Corwin, placed on the ground in Lyme, Conn., within 18-cm-diameter rings in November 1988, survived the winter and laid eggs during the first weeks of May. The female ticks overwintered within the grass mat or in the crevices of the soil under the leaf litter. Two of the females had moved as far as the metal rim (approximately 9 cm) sometime in November or December. Three females moved from their winter sites to other locations within the confines of the ring during March and April. One had moved as far as the metal ring

The life cycle of Ixodes luciae was evaluated for five consecutive generations in the laboratory. Wild mice Calomys callosus and laboratory rats Rattus norvegicus were used as hosts for larvae and nymphs. For adult ticks, opossums Didelphis aurita were used as hosts. Off-host developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27 degrees C and 95% RH. The life cycle of I. luciae lasted 95-97 days, excluding prefeeding periods. C. callosus, one of the natural host species for I. luciae immature stages, was shown to be much more suitable than the artificial host R. norvegicus. Significantly (

Traps made by rectangular pieces of 3 mm thick corrugated cardboard of four different sizes, 200 by 140 (A), 140 by 100 (B), 100 by 70 (C), and 200 by 40 mm (D), were evaluated as a sampling device for the chicken mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer). Mites were trapped during 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 d, respectively, in a poultry house heavily infested with the parasite. Significantly greater numbers of mites were collected by trap B. Additionally, significantly more mites were collected during the sampling periods 6-10 d than by 2 and 4 d. However, with regard to trap size and sampling period, tra

The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), until recently was recorded only from the southeastern and southwestern counties of Pennsylvania. Since 1968, this species has expanded its range and is reported from 63 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. This range extension is a matter of concern to the medical community and to physicians throughout Pennsylvania, particularly those with practices in areas where this tick was previously unknown and who may not be familiar with the symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

In developed and underdeveloped countries, ticks are important vectors transmitting various pathogens that cause diseases of veterinary and public health importance, like babesiosis, theileriosis, Crimean‑Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and many more. Many species of ticks have been reported in scientific literature from Pakistan, which need to be listed for ready reference. For this purpose, a checklist of tick species recorded in Pakistan is presented here after comprehensive review of the available literature on the subject. Overall, nine genera and 53 species of ticks infesting animals in

The abundance of Ixodes scapularis Say (Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin), the vector tick of the Lyme disease spirochete and other human pathogens, is related to the presence of its primary reproductive stage host, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmerman). However, this relationship has not been quantified in terms that would guide wildlife management in areas in which the public is, or is likely to become, exposed to infected ticks. In this study, deer density and tick abundance were measured in an emergent area for Lyme disease at three spatial scales using es

A survey was conducted to determine the status of wild mammals and birds as hosts for Amblyomma variegatum (F.) and other tick species in Antigua. Surveys of wild mammals and birds were conducted periodically from September 1988 through May 1991. Wild mammals surveyed included the small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus Hodgson), Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout), and house mouse (Mus musculus L.), but only mongooses were surveyed intensively. Larvae and nymphs of A. variegatum, larvae of Boophilus microplus (Canestrini), and larvae of Ornithodoros puertoricensis (Fox) were reco
