The food environment plays an important role in shaping diets, yet evidence in Zambia is limited. Traditional fermented foods such as mabisi, a Zambian traditional fermented milk, are beneficial and recommended as part of a healthy diet in the Zambian food-based dietary guidelines. Using components of Photovoice, this study explored factors influencing the consumption of healthy diets in the urban and rural food environments of two Zambian districts, Choma and Chipata, which differ in mabisi consumption. Fifty-seven participants shared their perspectives, revealing that despite the differences

Food availability in the territory can influence food consumption by the population. However, it is important to understand how people perceive their food environment to see how food availability affects consumption in different contexts. This study aimed to assess the perception of the food environment by Brazilian slum residents in their neighborhoods. This is a qualitative study, with online focus groups guided by a script in order to gather collective discourses about access to food in Brazilian slums. The invitation to participate in this study was made through social media, and community

In Cambodia, both anaemia and vitamin A deficiency are serious health problems. Despite this, few comprehensive nutritional surveys have been completed to date. This study evaluates the adequacy of iron and vitamin A intakes, as well as women's nutritional knowledge in rural Kandal province. Twenty-four hour recalls, pile sort activities, socioeconomic surveys, focus groups, and market surveys were carried out with 67 women from 5 villages in rural Kandal Province. Ninety seven percent of women did not meet their daily-recommended intake of iron, while 70% did not meet their daily-recommended

OBJECTIVE: A healthy diet may contribute to improved disease activity in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). In Canada, access to healthy food is variable. This study examined the relationship between food accessibility, disease activity measures, and weight in children with JIA.
METHODS: Clinical data from children newly diagnosed with JIA (2017-2021) collected in the Canadian Alliance of Pediatric Rheumatology Investigators (CAPRI) Registry were linked to neighborhood-level food accessibility measures using postal codes. Data were analyzed at enrollment and at 1-year follow-up. Association

Cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic (CKM) diseases are leading causes of mortality in the United States (US), with geographic and socioeconomic disparities. The community food environment, including food accessibility and security, is a modifiable determinant of CKM health. We systematically examined associations between county-level multidimensional food environment indicators and CKM-related mortality across US counties. We conducted an ecological analysis integrating data from the County Health Rankings and CDC WONDER. Generalized linear models estimated rate ratios (RR) for age-adjusted

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) has ensured access to healthy foods for participating low-income pregnant and postpartum women and children under age 5 for over 50 years. Serving ∼6.8 million individuals monthly, WIC-eligible foods align with dietary science and only include foods rich in nutrients known to be deficient in US diets. Fruits and vegetables (FV) were introduced to the WIC food package in 2009; the $8-$10/month for FV were associated with small increases in consumption. In 2021, WIC FV benefits increased to provide 50% of the recomm

Farmers' markets are important spaces for the commercialization of fruits and vegetables, which access by the urban population is considered one of the key aspects of healthy cities. This study adopts an ecological approach with geographic-spatial emphasis to describe accessibility to farmers' markets in Porto Alegre-RS, by four different modes of transport (walking, bicycle, bus, and car) and their associations with income and race/skin color. The distribution of markets across the city is more balanced than other food establishments, although physical accessibility is highly uneven across mo

The study examined the relationship between food swamps and self-reported food shopping frequency and perceived food access, while considering transportation mode and travel time. This Community-Based Participatory Research study surveyed residents from six neighborhoods in Hartford. Individual-level food swamp exposure (the ratio of unhealthy to healthy food stores within a 0.5-mile radius of participants' homes) was measured both objectively (using GIS-based methods) and subjectively (through self-reporting). Poisson regression models assessed the associations between food swamps and outcome

The chronic ingestion of pesticide residues through food appears to be a global public health issue, especially in Brazil. This study evaluates 120 menus across six Brazilian institutional restaurants, estimating the allowance of active pesticide ingredients, residue characterization, and chronic exposure risk through food. Data analysis reveals 263 authorized active ingredients, predominantly insecticides (43%), fungicides (40%), and herbicides (14%) for use in 40 foods. Notably, 4% of residues are extremely toxic, 5% highly toxic, and 14% moderately toxic. Forty-two compounds, especially tho

BACKGROUND: Disparities in neighborhood food environments in the United States, attributed to numerous complex economic, social, and political factors, likely to contribute to disparities in access to healthy food and cognitive function in older adults. However, the role of food environment in cognitive function is not well understood. Accordingly, this study examined the association of residing a low food access and low-income neighborhood with changes in cognitive function among older adults in urban areas.
METHODS: This is a cohort study leveraging existing datasets. The 2010 Food Access R

There is evidence that food outlet access differs according to level of neighbourhood deprivation but little is known about how individual circumstances affect associations between food outlet access and diet. This study explored the relationship between dietary quality and a measure of overall food environment, representing the balance between healthy and unhealthy food outlet access in individualised activity spaces. Furthermore, this study is the first to assess effect modification of level of educational attainment on this relationship. A total of 839 mothers with young children from Hamps

Public transportation facilities are high-traffic urban spaces that may shape food access and dietary choices, yet their surrounding food environments remain understudied, particularly in socially vulnerable settings. This study characterized the food environment surrounding public transportation facilities in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. We conducted an ecological study using georeferenced data from 47 bus stations, 47,003 bus stops, and 18 subway stations in 2019. Food retail establishments and public food and nutrition security facilities (PFNSFs) were mapped within 500-m buffers and analyzed ac

Access to nutritious foods, a social determinant of health, contributes to disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes such as mental health, breastfeeding intensity and cardiometabolic risk. This study explored perceived nutrition access and intake among pregnant or post-partum women eligible for Medicaid. Qualitative, semistructured interviews were conducted with 18 women who were either currently pregnant (n = 4) or up to 12 months post-partum (n = 14) in 2021-2022. Mothers spoke English (n = 11) or Spanish (n = 7) and lived in the Texas Panhandle. Interviews were audio-recorded, tra

The female prison population is on the increase in the world. This population is being exposed to precarious conditions of confinement that often prevent or hinder access to food of effective and equitable quality, thereby representing a considerable problem within the scope of public health. This paper aims to understand the aspects of food in the female penitentiary system of the state of Paraíba. It involved research with a qualitative approach, developed in all the female prisons in the state of Paraíba. The participants of this research are 16 women in the prison context. These results sh

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The Nova classification considers the purpose and degree of food processing to capture how recent changes in the food system may link with health. Its value for understanding diet-disease relationships is debated. However, reviews typically focus only on its value, or its limitations. Furthermore, by discussing the degree of processing only and not the purpose, or discussing processing in general, reviews of limitations do not address pitfalls of the Nova classification. This conflict and confusion stalls progress to improve public health. Therefore, this review aims to prov

Food decision-making among urban consumers of low income is comprised of a complex interplay of strategies, influenced by sociodemographic and environmental factors. This study was conducted in the Bronx, New York City, a borough marked by disparities and limited healthy food access. The study aimed to co-develop with urban consumers of low income a conceptual framework representing food procurement decision-making, with special attention paid to the multifaceted dynamics of food acquisition in the context of food insecurity. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with

Millions of children across the United States rely on school meals as a primary source of daily nutrition. Access to healthy meals improves diet quality, reduces hunger, and supports better attendance and academic performance. Recent federal actions, however, have threatened the reach and quality of these programs. Funding reductions have limited schools' ability to purchase fresh, locally sourced foods and have made universal free meals harder to provide. These changes disproportionately affect students from low-income and historically marginalized communities, increasing food insecurity, sti

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2026eng
Liver transplant (LT) recipients are at risk of post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM), and the incidence varies by region. We explored the relationship between county-level food environment and PTDM and whether food insecurity mediates regional variation. First-time LT recipients from July 2004 to December 2022 without pre-existing diabetes were identified in the UNOS SRTR database. Data on 3 measures of healthy food access at the county level were obtained: population experiencing food insecurity, low-income population with low access to grocery stores (food deserts), and ratio of unhealth

The health status of individuals in Slovenia across age groups is a matter of concern, as current unsustainable lifestyle choices are already leading to various chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Outdated national dietary guidelines, their inconsistent implementation, and a lack of structural changes represent obstacles to promoting healthy and sustainable nutrition. Limited access to and rising prices of healthy, sustainable foods, in addition to the high availability of low-priced, highly processed foods, increase the risk of NCDs. The lack of systematic health monitoring and early dis
