COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown: what has changed in common home accidents such as foreign bodies and corrosive injuries?

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected our lives in all areas. Due to the social isolation policies implemented during this period, the majority of parents and all school-age children spent their lives at home. This study aims to investigate the effects of pandemic and isolation on home accidents treated in our center. METHODS: Foreign body ingestion (gastric foreign bodies: G.FB), foreign body aspiration (respiratory foreign bodies: R.FB), and corrosive substance (CS) ingestion cases admitted to our hospital between March 11, 2019, and March 10, 2021, were retrospectively analyzed. Suspected child abuse among victims of home accidents being admitted to the emergency department: a prospective survey from Turkey.

OBJECTIVES: Association between home injuries and child abuse has received interest in Western countries. Inasmuch as it is now known that cultural differences may have an impact on child-rearing practices and the definition of maltreatment, we aimed to assess the suspected physical abuse in children presenting to the emergency department with home injuries and determine the risk factors associated with suspected child maltreatment in our region. METHOD: The study is prospective in design. The sample was composed of 87 children younger than 72 months with presenting histories of home accident

Feasibility of an Emergency Department-Based Two-Step ADHD Screening Pathway in Primary School-Age Children Presenting with Home Accidents: A Prospective Two-Center Case-Control Study.

Background/Objectives: Emergency department (ED) visits for pediatric home accidents may provide an opportunity to identify children who warrant evaluation for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study primarily evaluated the feasibility of a two-step ED-based ADHD screening and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry referral pathway. A secondary exploratory objective was to compare the frequency of confirmed ADHD between children presenting with home accidents and non-injured ED controls. Methods: This prospective, two-center case-control study was conducted in two emergency depart

[Presence of benzodiazepines in the serum of patients after accidents. Relation to alcoholism].

In a study of 2.021 injured persons (accidents at home or at work, road accidents), qualitative assays of serum benzodiazepines by the EMIT method were positive in 9.6 per cent of the cases, including 3.2 per cent who had blood alcohol levels in excess of 0.10 g/l. Benzodiazepines were more frequently found in accidents at home and on roads than in accidents at work. These results raise the question of the role played by benzodiazepines as a possible risk factor of accidents, notably road accidents.

98 injuries per 1,000 inhabitants are medically treated per year. 4% are due to violence and 1% are self-inflicted. 34% are accidents in the home. 20% are occupational accidents where the highest risk exists in industry, followed by agriculture. The calculated risk of accidents in schools and kindergartens is on the level of the average at work. Alcohol is a contributing factor in 63% of the injuries caused by violence and 29% of the cases of self-inflicted injuries. 26% of the persons injured in the streets were under the influence of alcohol, and 8% of those involved in traffic accidents and

Casualties in Acapulco: results of a study on alcohol use and emergency room care.

This article reports the results of an emergency room study carried out in 1987 in three hospitals in Acapulco, Mexico. All patients were interviewed and breath tested for alcohol consumption. The data were analyzed using the case-control methodology. Cases were falls, motor vehicle accidents, fights and assaults, and home accidents. The control group included patients for whom accidents are less frequently reported as alcohol related, i.e., those reporting work place accidents, animal bites and recreational accidents. For positive breathalyzer readings (> or = 10 mg/100 ml of blood alcohol),

Permanent impairments, disabilities and disability pensions related to accidents in Norway.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the burden of accidents in terms of new disability pensioners related to accidental injuries in Norway and to use this information to supplement the picture of the epidemiology of accidents in Norway. The basis of the study was 7,241 new disability pensioners due to accidents in the Disability Register of the National Insurance Administration in Norway for 1992-1997. Included in the analyses are some data from health surveys in USA and Norway. The rate of disability pensioners (16-66 years old) due to accidents increased 4% annually during 1992-1997, a

Accidents among schizophrenic outpatients.

A preliminary comparison of traffic, home, and work accident incidence was performed among 103 outpatient schizophrenic patients and an age matched sample of 123 controls. The number of motor vehicle drivers among schizophrenic outpatients was far less than among controls (70 of 103 versus 122 of 123; P = .00001). Among those who did drive, schizophrenic patients drove far less than controls (19 of 70 patients driving greater than or equal to 5,000 miles per year versus 81 of 122 controls; P = .0001). Patients also reported more accidents per miles driven than did controls, consistent with pre

Child victims of dog bites treated in emergency departments: a prospective survey.

UNLABELLED: The study was conducted to determine the characteristics of child victims of dog bite accidents. Pediatricians and nurses prospectively collected standardized information on all child victims of dog bites brought in for treatment to six hospital emergency departments (three urban university teaching hospitals and three rural hospitals). One hundred completed questionnaires were collected and analyzed. The frequency of dog bites brought for care to the emergency departments was equivalent to about one-quarter of all road traffic casualties and one-third of burns at home. Of the 100

Sports-related injuries in children. A study of their characteristics, frequency, and severity, with comparison to other types of accidental injuries.

In 1981 to 1982, within a 1 year period, details were recorded of children aged 0 to 15 years and 3 months, who were treated for accidental injury in a French health care district; 789 sports-related accidents were registered, representing 11% of all accidents. Sports areas were the leading sites of accident among children over age 12. Out-of-school sports accidents were more frequent among boys, but boys and girls had similar injury rates in school physical education. Compared to home, school, and road accidents, sports accidents had the highest rate of upper limb injury. The fracture rate wa

The epidemiology of hand injuries in The Netherlands and Denmark.

Little is known about the magnitude of hand injuries at national levels. This paper quantifies and characterises the incidence of hand injuries that require acute medical attention at Emergency Departments in The Netherlands and Denmark. Except for the incidence rate and the referral after treatment, the overall picture of hand injuries is similar for both countries: hand injuries show a peak for teenagers, result mainly from home and leisure accidents, are mainly caused by objects and falls, the majority affect fingers and result mainly in superficial injuries, open wounds and fractures, a sm

Impact of the first COVID-19 lockdown on domestic accidents in children in France.

BACKGROUND: In March 2020, several countries, including France, implemented a total lockdown policy to combat the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, involving the closure of schools. This measure required children to stay at home for an extended period of time. Several studies have shown an increase in the number or proportion and severity of domestic accidents in children during this period. Santé Publique France and the paediatric emergency department of Toulouse University Hospital conducted a study on the impact of the first lockdown on the use of the emergency department due to domestic acc

Epidemiology of accidents in a Swedish municipality.

Total population injury surveillance was implemented in a geographical area with a population of over 41,000. All accidents taking place over one year that required medical care were noted. A total of 4,926 were registered, for a rate of 118.9 per 1,000. They consisted of accidents in the home (35.0%), sports accidents (18.9%), accidents at work (13.7%), traffic accidents (12.8%), and "other" accidents (19.5%). Men were involved in 62.2%, and were overrepresented in all age groups but 70 years and over. The commonest cause of injury was falling (36.4%), followed by injuries due to falling obje
