Is Ocular Accommodation Influenced by Dynamic Ambient Illumination and Pupil Size?

PURPOSE: We investigated ocular accommodative responses and pupil diameters under different light intensities in order to explore whether changes in light intensity aid effective accommodation function training. METHODS: A total of 29 emmetropic and myopic subjects (age range: 12-18 years) viewed a target in dynamic ambient light (luminance: 5, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 lux) and static ambient light (luminance: 1000 lux) at a 40 cm distance with refractive correction. Accommodation and pupil diameter were recorded using an open-field infrared autorefractor and an ultrasound biologica

Correlation between ocular biometry and amplitude of accommodation in early presbyopia.

PURPOSE: To determine the correlation between ocular biometric parameters and the amplitude of accommodation in early presbyopic eyes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 62 eyes of 62 subjects aged from 40 to 49 years. All participants were emmetropic (spherical equivalent refractive error within 0.50 D of emmetropia with astigmatism less than 0.75 D) and best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was 20/20. Only the right eyes of all subjects were included for analysis. In all subjects a complete ophthalmologic examination was performed and the amplitude of accommodation (AA) w

A review of the role of sympathetic innervation of the ciliary muscle in ocular accommodation.

Although it is well established that autonomic control of ocular accommodation is predominantly parasympathetic, many investigators have, over the last 150 years, proposed that a supplementary sympathetic innervation should be considered. Particular attention is directed in this review to previous literature providing anatomical, physiological and pharmacological evidence for dual innervation of the ciliary muscle. Clinical and psychological evidence is shown to be equivocal. A review of recent laser optometry studies of tonic ("dark-focus") resting positions of accommodation indicates that th

Relationship of ocular accommodation and motor skills performance in developmental coordination disorder.

Ocular accommodation provides a well-focussed image, feedback for accurate eye movement control, and cues for depth perception. To accurately perform visually guided motor tasks, integration of ocular motor systems is essential. Children with motor coordination impairment are established to be at higher risk of accommodation anomalies. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between ocular accommodation and motor tasks, which are often overlooked, in order to better understand the problems experienced by children with motor coordination impairment. Visual function, gross a

Accommodation-based liquid crystal adaptive optics system for large ocular aberration correction.

According to ocular aberration property and liquid crystal (LC) corrector characteristics, we calculated the minimum pixel demand of the LC corrector used for compensating large ocular aberrations. Then, an accommodation based optical configuration was introduced to reduce the demand. Based on this an adaptive optics (AO) retinal imaging system was built. Subjects with different defocus and astigmatism were tested to prove this. For myopia lower than 5D it performs well. When myopia is as large as 8D the accommodation error increased to nearly 3D, which requires the LC corrector to have 667 x

Pulse-step models of control strategies for dynamic ocular accommodation and disaccommodation.

Dynamic properties and control strategies of step responses by accommodation and disaccommodation differ from one another. Peak velocity of accommodation increases with response magnitude, while peak velocity and peak acceleration of disaccommodation increase with starting position. These dynamic properties can be modeled as control strategies that use independent acceleration-pulse and velocity-step components that are integrated respectively into phasic-velocity signals that control movement and tonic-position signals that control magnitude. Accommodation is initiated toward its final destin

Encircling scleral buckling impact on ocular accommodation changes in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

BACKGROUND: Encircling scleral buckling is a surgical intervention employed for the purpose of visual restoration in individuals diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). While this particular approach is not commonly used for the purpose of enhancing accommodation, it has garnered attention in various studies. This research aimed to objectively measure accommodation changes using the iTrace device in patients with RRD who have undergone encircling scleral buckling surgery. METHOD: This pilot prospective cohort study included 40 eyes from 20 patients with RRD who underwent encir

Refractive state, ocular anatomy, and accommodative range of the sea otter (Enhydra lutris).

Sea otters are carnivorous, amphibious mammals that are active both above and under water. Accordingly, it might be expected that their eyes are adapted for both aerial and aqueous vision. We examined the anatomy and physiological optics of the sea otter eye with a view towards describing and explaining its amphibious visual characteristics. We employed photokeratoscopy to measure the refractive power of the sea otter cornea, which we found to be 59 D. Using video dynamic photorefraction, we found that sea otters can focus targets clearly both in air and water, relying on accommodation to comp

Presbyopia: an animal model and experimental approaches for the study of the mechanism of accommodation and ocular ageing.

During the last hundred years, observations on normal and a few aniridic human eyes, together with population studies on the age-dependent decline in accommodative amplitude, resulted in the formulation of theories of human accommodation, and led to the concept that presbyopia is an inevitable consequence of ageing. However, such studies failed to substantiate these theories and concepts or to reveal the fundamental mechanisms of accommodation and its age-dependent loss. Detailed understanding of these mechanisms and the environmental, dietary, and behavioural factors that may influence the de

Improvement in impaired ocular accommodation by parietal acupoint therapy to relieve neck stiffness: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Neck stiffness could lead to impaired ocular accommodation. We report two cases that visual function was improved by relieving neck stiffness. CASE PRESENTATION: (Case 1) A 34-year-old female complained of neck stiffness and visual problems after computer work. She was treated by parietal acupoint therapy (PAPT), which is a new scalp micro-acupuncture system. The evaluation of accommodative micro-fluctuations (the Fk-map) showed that increased bilateral ciliary muscle tension in the middle to near distance was relieved bilaterally, accompanied by relief of neck stiffness after tre

Ocular Accommodation, Intraocular Pressure, Development of Myopia and Glaucoma: Role of Ciliary Muscle, Choroid and Metabolism.

Ocular accommodation is not just a mechanism for altering curvature of the crystalline lens of the eye, it also enables aqueous humor outflow through the trabecular meshwork, influencing intraocular pressure (IOP). Long term stress on the ciliary muscle from sustained near focusing may initiate myopic eye growth in children and primary open angle glaucoma in presbyopic adults. Multi-factorial studies of ocular accommodation that include measures of IOP, ciliary muscle morphology, anterior chamber depth and assessment of nutritional intake and metabolic markers may elucidate etiology and novel

Central and Peripheral Ocular High-Order Aberrations and Their Relationship with Accommodation and Refractive Error: A Review.

High-order aberrations (HOAs) are optical defects that degrade the image quality. They change with factors such as pupil diameter, age, and accommodation. The changes in optical aberrations during accommodation are mainly due to lens shape and position changes. Primary spherical aberration (Z(4.0)) is closely related to accommodation and some studies suggested that it plays an important role in the control of accommodation. Furthermore, central and peripheral HOAs vary with refractive error and seem to influence eye growth and the onset and progression of myopia. The variations of central and

The role of retinotopic cues in deciphering the direction and magnitude of monocular dynamic ocular accommodation: A review.

Accommodative responses of humans operate seamlessly to ensure clear vision of targets at different viewing distances, up until the onset of presbyopia. To achieve this, the visual system must correctly decipher the polarity and magnitude of retinal defocus in real-time, and often under very challenging viewing conditions. The past seven decades of research in this area has identified several retinotopic cues that may potentially provide the desired odd- and even-error information to the visual system for solving these challenges. These studies have used a variety of technology, experimental p

Refractive state, corneal curvature, accommodative range and ocular anatomy of the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).

The resting refractive state of six mature, female, Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) was determined using streak retinoscopy and neutralizing video retinoscopy. The amplitude of accommodation was also measured by neutralizing video retinoscopy of two animals and the corneal curvatures of three animals was measured by photokeratoscopy. The net spherical refraction was found to be +0.23 D. No difference was observed between cyclopleged and non-cyclopleged eyes (data from three animals), nor was there any difference between right and left eyes. Nine of the twelve eyes refracted had > or = 0.5 D

Accommodation in myopic children wearing individualized ocular refraction customization spectacle lenses: Results from a randomized clinical trial.

Individualized ocular refraction customization (IORC) spectacle lenses represent a novel design to effectively control myopia progression. This study aimed to assess whether one year of wearing IORC lenses induces persistent changes in accommodative functions when measured under single-vision (SV) correction condition and to evaluate the association between initial accommodative response and myopia progression. A total of 171 myopic children were randomized to wear either IORC lenses with high (4.50 diopters (D)), medium (3.50 D), or low (2.50 D) myopic defocus or SV lenses for 1 year. Accommo

The impact of break schedules on digital eye strain symptoms and ocular accommodation during prolonged near work.

This study evaluated the effects of four different break schedules on symptoms and signs of Digital Eye Strain (DES) during a 40-min reading task. Twenty-four young adults participated in four experimental conditions, performed on four different days in random order: no break, one break at 20 min, one break every 10 min and self-paced breaks. Primary outcomes included visual symptoms reported after the reading task, accommodative lag and variability during the reading task, and the near work-induced transient myopia (NITM) assessed post-task (including initial NITM and its decay).
