Malaria control requires the coordination of different strategies due to the lack of an effective vaccine and the emerging resistance of parasites to drugs and of vectors to insecticides. Therefore, efficient and environmentally safe alternative control strategies are still needed. In this study, we explored the composition of microbiota of the Anopheles gambiae and its variability in the presence of natural Plasmodium infection during the wet and dry seasons, in order to determine their potential as a novel vector control-based approach to fight malaria. An entomological survey of a collectio

Insects host a wide variety of microbial symbionts, including bacteria and fungi, which contribute to their survival by supplementing essential nutrients and aiding in adaptation to diverse ecological niches. The mode of symbiont transmission between generations, particularly vertical transmission, plays a central role in maintaining these mutualistic relationships. In this review, we focus on the transmission mechanisms of symbionts in planthoppers (Fulgoromorpha), a group of sap-feeding insects that rely heavily on obligate, nutritional symbionts for amino acid biosynthesis. These symbionts

While the microbial diversity of kombucha has been previously investigated, only a limited number of studies have explicitly distinguished between the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) and the liquid broth, and even fewer have directly associated microbial diversity with bacterial cellulose production. This study investigated the microbial communities present in commercially available kombucha products by using both culture-based and molecular analysis methods, along with metabolite profiling by chemical analyses. Culture-based methods identified key cellulose-producing strains,

Inspired by natural microbial cooperation, a co-culture approach was used to synthesize bacterial nanocellulose (BNC)-based nanocomposites for potential wound healing applications. By co-culturing either Komagataeibacter xylinus (K1G4) or the never tested strain K. rhaeticus (K2G46) with the hyaluronic acid (HA)-producer Lacticaseibacillus casei UMCC 2535, two BNC-HA nanocomposites were obtained (C1-K1 and C2-K2). The membranes showed a HA content of 0.49 ± 0.05 mg (C1-K1) and 1.40 ± 0.07 mg (C2-K2), and both revealing a nearly complete release of HA after 1 h in PBS. Compared to pure BNC memb

The mosquito microbiome alters the physiological traits of medically important mosquitoes, which can scale to impact how mosquito populations sustain disease transmission. The mosquito microbiome varies significantly within individual mosquitoes and among populations, however the ecological and environmental factors that contribute to this variation are poorly understood. To further understand the factors that influence variation and diversity of the mosquito microbiome, we conducted a survey of the bacterial microbiome in the medically important mosquito, Aedes albopictus, on the high Pacific

BACKGROUND: Asaia spp., bacteria originally isolated from tropical plants, have also been identified in various insect species, including blood-feeding ones. Their ability to colonize different host tissues and transmit vertically between generations makes these bacteria good candidates for paratransgenesis. However, most existing data derived from studies on mosquitoes and other important vectors, such as phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae), remain understudied. In this study, we investigated the ability of wild-type Asaia siamensis, Asaia krungthepensis, and a genetically modified

Various vector control strategies are in place to reduce the spread of arthropod-borne viruses. Some of these, such as application of insecticides, are encountering operational challenges and a reduced overall effectiveness due to evolution of resistance. Alternative approaches for mosquito population control, such as the sterile insect technique, depend on efficient mass-rearing of healthy mosquitoes prior to mass-release in the field. Therefore, improving efficiency and quality of mass-rearing techniques is crucial to obtain fit mosquitoes. Previous studies have shown that Acetic Acid Bacter

Background: Acetification is a complex process driven by acetic acid bacteria (AAB), in which high ethanol and acidity levels require strong microbial metabolic adaptation. Although the microbiota involved in vinegar production has been described, the functional mechanisms that enable these bacteria to maintain metabolic activity remain poorly understood. In this study, the functional dynamics of AAB during Verdejo vinegar acetification were analyzed using a quantitative metaproteomic approach. Methods: Acetification was performed in submerged culture under semi-continuous conditions, and samp

Acetic acid bacteria (AAB) are known as a vinegar producer on account of their ability to accumulate a high concentration of acetic acid due to oxidative fermentation linking the ethanol oxidation respiratory chain. Reactions in oxidative fermentation cause poor growth because a large amount of the carbon source is oxidized incompletely and the harmful oxidized products are accumulated almost stoichiometrically in the culture medium during growth, but a newly identified AAB, Asaia, has shown unusual properties, including scanty acetic acid production and rapid growth, as compared with known AA

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inherited immune deficiency characterized by increased susceptibility to infection with Staphylococcus, certain gram-negative bacteria, and fungi. Granulibacter bethesdensis, a newly described genus and species within the family Acetobacteraceae, was recently isolated from four CGD patients residing in geographically distinct locales who presented with fever and lymphadenitis. We sequenced the genome of the reference strain of Granulibacter bethesdensis, which was isolated from lymph nodes of the original patient. The genome contains 2,708,355 base pai

This study aimed to characterize the microbial composition of green tea-fermented kombucha at different fermentation times and to evaluate its effects on inflammation and alveolar bone loss in rats with periodontitis. Microbial diversity was first assessed by metagenomic sequencing targeting bacterial 16 S rRNA and fungal 18 S rRNA regions. Sixty male rats were divided into six groups: control, periodontitis without treatment, green tea treatment, and kombucha fermented for 4, 8, or 12 days. Kombucha or green tea was administered daily by oral gavage for 39 days. Periodontitis was induced by l

This work addresses the need for new chemical matter in product development for control of pest insects and vector-borne diseases. We present a barcoding strategy that enables phenotypic screens of blood-feeding insects against small molecules in microtiter plate-based arrays and apply this to discovery of novel systemic insecticides and compounds that block malaria parasite development in the mosquito vector. Encoding of the blood meals was achieved through recombinant DNA-tagged Asaia bacteria that successfully colonised Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes. An arrayed screen of a collection of pe

The present study describes the preparation and characterization of composite films from bacterial cellulose produced by Komagataeibacter xylinus combined with poly(vinyl alcohol) and chitosan. The unique bacterial cellulose structure provides an expanded surface area with high porosity, easing the combination with other soluble polymers by dipping. This blending method effectively reinforces the bacterial cellulose structure. Toughness, puncture strength, water solubility, and swelling degree were measured to assess the effect of poly(vinyl alcohol) and chitosan on the analyzed properties. Th

Usable water sources are at risk due to improper disposal and chemical contaminants. A potentially effective solution is using a biofilter based on bacterial cellulose (BC) to treat wastewater. This research aimed to produce BC using Komagataeibacter hansenii (ATCC 23769) from by-products to develop an efficient biofilter for removing microscopy dyes. To achieve this, K. hansenii was cultivated in three culture media using industrial co-products: control: mannitol (CT), crude glycerol + corn steep liquor (CGC), and coffee husk + corn steep liquor (CHC). Chromatography analysis assessed compoun
