Bacteremia caused by Achromobacter and Alcaligenes species in 46 patients with cancer (1989-2003).

BACKGROUND: Achromobacter and Alcaligenes are emerging infectious gram-negative bacterial species that can affect immunosuppressed patients. The authors sought to determine the incidence and characteristics of bloodstream infections caused by these organisms in patients with underlying malignancies. METHODS: All consecutive episodes of hematogenous Achromobacter and Alcaligenes infections recorded from December 26, 1989, to July 27, 2003, were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: Fifty-two episodes occurred in 46 patients; 31 patients (67%) had hematologic malignancies, and 24 (52%) experienced

Removal of Ibuprofen from Contaminated Water by Bioaugmentation with Novel Bacterial Strains Isolated from Sewage Sludge.

Ibuprofen (IBP), one of the most consumed drugs in the world, is only partially removed in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). Its presence in effluents and sewage sludge introduces IBP into the environment. It is imperative to continue research on IBP degraders that can be used in the future to eliminate IBP at the WWTP level. This study describes the use of nine specific IBP-degrading bacteria isolated from sewage sludge (Achromobacter denitrificans, Bordetella petrii, Brucella tritici, Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens, Microbacterium paraoxydans, Pseudomonas citronellolis, Pseudomonas nitrore

JMM Profile: Achromobacter xylosoxidans: the cloak-and-dagger opportunist.

Achromobacter xylosoxidans is associated with resilient nosocomial infections, with bacteraemia, pneumonia and chronic cystic fibrosis lung infection being the most common clinical presentations. Innate multi-drug resistance and a suite of virulence factors select for A. xylosoxidans infection during long-term antibiotic therapy, contributing to its persistence, treatment recalcitrance, association with poor clinical outcomes and emergence as a problematic pathogen. Horizontal gene transfer and maintenance of large genomes underpin the resilience and cosmopolitan lifestyle of A. xylosoxidans,

Chronic otorrhea and osteomyelitis of the external auditory canal by Achromobacter xylosoxidans: an uncommon diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an emerging pathogen mainly associated with resistant nosocomial infections. This bacteria had been isolated in the ear together with other pathogens in cultures from patients with chronic otitis media, but it had never been reported as a cause of osteomyelitis of the external auditory canal. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of a healthy 81-year-old woman who presented with left chronic otorrhea refractory to topical and oral antibiotic treatment. Otomicroscopy revealed an erythematous and exudative external auditory canal (EAC) with scant oto

The cystic fibrosis pathogen Achromobacter xylosoxidans inhibits biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Background. Achromobacter xylosoxidans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are two pathogens that cause persistent airway infections in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). The persistence of P. aeruginosa is partly due to a high capacity to form biofilms and the ability to exert antagonism against other bacteria. Loss of microbial diversity in conjunction with chronic P. aeruginosa colonization is strongly correlated with low lung function in CF. A. xylosoxidans and P. aeruginosa are frequently co-isolated in CF airway cultures. This study aims to investigate the reciprocal effects on growth inhibit

Comparative genomics of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-resistant Achromobacter xylosoxidans clinical isolates from Serbia reveals shortened variant of class 1 integron integrase gene.

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) is the preferable treatment option of the infections caused by Achromobacter spp. Our study aimed to analyze the SXT resistance of 98 Achromobacter spp. isolates from pediatric patients, among which 33 isolates were SXT-resistant. The presence of intI1 was screened by PCR and genome sequence analyses. The intI1 gene was detected in 10 of SXT-resistant isolates that had shorter intI1 PCR fragments named intI1S. Structural changes in intI1S were confirmed by genome sequencing and analyses which revealed 86 amino acids deletion in IntI1S protein compared to can

Establishment of a chinchilla model of Achromobacter xylosoxidans-induced otitis media.

UNLABELLED: Achromobacter xylosoxidans (Ax) is an emerging opportunistic pathogen associated with chronic respiratory infections, particularly in individuals with cystic fibrosis; however, its role in otitis media (OM) and the mechanisms that underlie middle ear infection remain poorly defined. Despite its initial isolation from middle ear effusions decades ago, no experimental models of Ax-induced OM have been established. Here, we report the development of a reproducible chinchilla model of Ax-induced OM, which, to our knowledge, represents the first experimental model of Ax-induced middle e

Consortia modulation of the stress response: proteomic analysis of single strain versus mixed culture.

The high complexity of naturally occurring microbial communities is the major drawback limiting the study of these important biological systems. In this study, a comparison between pure cultures of Pseudomonas reinekei sp. strain MT1 and stable community cultures composed of MT1 plus the addition of Achromobacter xylosoxidans strain MT3 (in a steady-state proportion 9:1) was used as a model system to study bacterial interactions that take place under simultaneous chemical and oxidative stress. Both are members of a real community isolated from a polluted sediment by enrichment in 4-chlorosalic

Severe cellulitis caused by Achromobacter xylosoxidans after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Achromobacter xylosoxidans (A. xylosoxidans) is an aerobic gram-negative bacillus and often isolated from aquatic environments. It is supposed to cause infections in patients with malignancy or immunodeficiency. It causes various healthcare-associated infections, but cellulitis is rare. Herein, we report the first case of sever cellulitis by A. xylosoxidans after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). A 49-year-old man underwent allogeneic HSCT from 8/8 HLA-matched unrelated donor with myeloablative conditioning for relapsed acute myeloid leukemia. He developed skin chronic

Characterization of the Achromobacter xylosoxidans Type VI Secretion System and Its Implication in Cystic Fibrosis.

Bacteria of the genus Achromobacter are environmental germs, with an unknown reservoir. It can become opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised patients, causing bacteremia, meningitis, pneumonia, or peritonitis. In recent years, Achromobacter xylosoxidans has emerged with increasing incidence in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Recent studies showed that A. xylosoxidans is involved in the degradation of the respiratory function of patients with CF. The respiratory ecosystem of patients with CF is colonized by bacterial species that constantly fight for space and access to nutrients. The

Insights into the Binding Interaction of Catechol 1,2-Dioxygenase with Catechol in Achromobacter xylosoxidans DN002.

Microbial remediation has become one of the promising ways to eliminate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution due to its efficient enzyme metabolism system. Catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (C12O) is a crucial rate-limiting enzyme in the degradation pathway of PAHs in Achromobacter xylosoxidans DN002 that opens the benzene ring through the ortho-cleavage pathway. However, little attention has been given to explore the interaction mechanism of relevant enzyme-substrate. This study aims to investigate the binding interaction between C12O of strain DN002 and catechol by means of a molecular b
