Microbial and volatile profiling of soils suppressive to Fusarium culmorum of wheat.

In disease-suppressive soils, microbiota protect plants from root infections. Bacterial members of this microbiota have been shown to produce specific molecules that mediate this phenotype. To date, however, studies have focused on individual suppressive soils and the degree of natural variability of soil suppressiveness remains unclear. Here, we screened a large collection of field soils for suppressiveness to Fusarium culmorum using wheat (Triticum aestivum) as a model host plant. A high variation of disease suppressiveness was observed, with 14% showing a clear suppressive phenotype. The mi

Distinction between Cr and other heavy-metal-resistant bacteria involved in C/N cycling in contaminated soils of copper producing sites.

For typical copper producing provinces of Heilongjiang, Henan, Inner Mongolia, Jiangxi, Shandong, Tibet, and Yunnan in China, 90 % of sampling sites were heavily polluted with multiple heavy metals. Soil heterogeneity and mutual interference of multimetals are obstacles to explore bacterial resistance pathways in contaminated field soils. Through analyses of contamination indices and bioindicators, combined with multivariate statistical models, the antioxidant enzyme activity, urease-induced precipitation of heavy metals, excretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were attributed to

Different Associations between Tonsil Microbiome, Chronic Tonsillitis, and Intermittent Hypoxemia among Obstructive Sleep Apnea Children of Different Weight Status: A Pilot Case-Control Study.

The tonsil microbiome is associated with chronic tonsillitis and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children, and the gut microbiome is associated with host weight status. In this study, we hypothesized that weight status may be associated with clinical profiles and the tonsil microbiome in children with OSA. We prospectively enrolled 33 non-healthy-weight (cases) and 33 healthy-weight (controls) pediatric OSA patients matched by the proportion of chronic tonsillitis. Differences in the tonsil microbiome between the non-healthy-weight and healthy-weight subgroups and relationships between the to

Alterations and correlations of the gut microbiome, metabolism and immunity in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis.

We selected 42 early-stage primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) patients and 30 healthy controls (HC). Metagenomic sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used to characterize the fecal microbiome. UPLC-MS/MS assaying of small molecules was used to characterize the metabolomes of the serum, urine and feces. Liquid chip assaying of serum cytokines was used to characterize the immune profiles. The gut of PBC patients were depleted of some potentially beneficial bacteria, such as Acidobacteria, Lachnobacterium sp., Bacteroides eggerthii and Ruminococcus bromii, but were enriched in some bacterial taxa con

Enhancing neonicotinoid removal in recirculating constructed wetlands: The impact of Fe/Mn biochar and microbial interactions.

Neonicotinoids pose significant environmental risks due to their widespread use, persistence, and challenges in elimination. This study explores the effectiveness of Fe/Mn biochar in enhancing the removal efficiency of neonicotinoids in recirculating constructed wetlands (RCWs). Results demonstrated that incorporating Fe/Mn biochar into RCWs significantly improved the removal of COD, NH4+-N, TN, TP, imidacloprid (IMI), and acetamiprid (ACE). However, the simultaneous presence of IMI and ACE in the RCWs hindered the elimination of NH4+-N, TN, and TP from wastewater. The enhanced removal of nutr

Microbial community structure with trends in methylation gene diversity and abundance in mercury-contaminated rice paddy soils in Guizhou, China.

Paddy soils from mercury (Hg)-contaminated rice fields in Guizhou, China were studied with respect to total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations as well as Bacterial and Archaeal community composition. Total Hg (0.25-990 μg g-1) and MeHg (1.3-30.5 ng g-1) varied between samples. Pyrosequencing (454 FLX) of the hypervariable v1-v3 regions of the 16S rRNA genes showed that Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Euryarchaeota, and Crenarchaeota were dominant in all samples. The Bacterial α-diversity was higher in samples with relatively Low THg and MeHg and d

Effects of elevated root-zone CO2 on nutrient uptake and rhizosphere microbiome in Oriental Melon (Cucumis melo var. makuwa Makino).

Despite the significance of CO2 as a crucial gaseous component in the soil environment, the effects of increased root-zone CO2 concentrations on the physiological responses of melon and the corresponding rhizosphere microbiome are still not well understood. This study examined the effects of elevated root-zone CO2 on oriental melon (Cucumis melo var. makuwa Makino) ('Yu Mei Ren') in a pot experiment under controlled O2 conditions. Treatments included a control group (3000 μmol·mol-¹ CO2) and three elevated concentrations: T1 (6000 μmol·mol-¹), T2 (9000 μmol·mol-¹), T3 (12000 μmol·mol-¹). This

CO2 leakage alters bacterial community structure and metabolic function of soybean rhizosphere in the Ordos Basin.

CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is a pivotal technology for mitigating global climate change, but CO2 leakage from geological storage sites risks disrupting soil rhizosphere bacterial communities critical to soil functionality. To clarify their response mechanisms, this study focused on CO2-sensitive soybean (Shanning 17) in the Ordos Basin, establishing a simulated CO2 leakage platform with four treatments: CK (control, ambient CO2), 10%, 30%, and 50%. Illumina NovaSeq 16 S rRNA sequencing combined with PICRUSt functional prediction was used to analyze rhizosphere bacteria. Results showed CO2 l

Microscale Spatiotemporal Variation of Reactive Oxygen Species in the Charosphere: Underlying Formation Mechanism and Their Role in CO2 Emission.

Charosphere, a highly active zone between biochar and surrounding soil, is widely present in agricultural and wildfire-affected soils, yet whether reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced within the charosphere remains unclear. Herein, the production and spatiotemporal evolution of charosphere ROS were explored. In situ ROS capture visualized a gradual decrease in ROS production with increasing distance from the biochar/soil interface. Temporally, O2•- and H2O2 contents initially increased and then declined with increasing incubation time, peaking at 3.04 and 5.40 μmol kg-1, respectively, wh

Next-Generation Sequencing of the Human Aqueous Humour Microbiome.

The microbiome of the ocular surface has been characterised, but only limited information is available on a possible silent intraocular microbial colonisation in normal eyes. Therefore, we performed next-generation sequencing (NGS) of 16S rDNA genes in the aqueous humour. The aqueous humour was sampled from three patients during cataract surgery. Air swabs, conjunctival swabs from patients as well as from healthy donors served as controls. Following DNA extraction, the V3 and V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S rDNA gene were amplified and sequenced followed by denoising. The resulting Amplico

Characterization of the Duodenal Mucosal Microbiome in Obese Adult Subjects by 16S rRNA Sequencing.

The gut microbiota may have an impact on obesity. To date, the majority of studies in obese patients reported microbiota composition in stool samples. The aim of this study was to investigate the duodenal mucosa dysbiosis in adult obese individuals from Campania, a region in Italy with a very high percentage of obese people, to highlight microbial taxa likely associated with obesity. Duodenum biopsies were taken during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in 19 obese (OB) and 16 lean control subjects (CO) and microbiome studied by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Duodenal microbiome in our groups consist

Expression of resistance genes instead of gene abundance are correlated with trace levels of antibiotics in urban surface waters.

In this study, antibiotic resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB) antibiotics in total microbial community in surface water in a coastal urban city was measured using a modified fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique. This FISH technique quantified the rate of antibiotic resistance to MLSB antibiotics through targeting methylation site of A2058 of 23S rRNAs resulting from expressed erythromycin ribosome methylation (erm) genes. Correlations between the rates of MLSB resistance measured by FISH and macrolide concentrations was stronger than that between the relat

Effects of Maternal Fiber Intake on Intestinal Morphology, Bacterial Profile and Proteome of Newborns Using Pig as Model.

Dietary fiber intake during pregnancy may improve offspring intestinal development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of maternal high fiber intake during late gestation on intestinal morphology, microbiota, and intestinal proteome of newborn piglets. Sixteen sows were randomly allocated into two groups receiving the control diet (CD) and high-fiber diet (HFD) from day 90 of gestation to farrowing. Newborn piglets were selected from each litter, named as CON and Fiber group, respectively. Maternal high fiber intake did not markedly improve the birth weight, but increased the bod

Long-term ferrocyanide application via deicing salts promotes the establishment of Actinomycetales assimilating ferrocyanide-derived carbon in soil.

Cyanides are highly toxic and produced by various microorganisms as defence strategy or to increase their competitiveness. As degradation is the most efficient way of detoxification, some microbes developed the capability to use cyanides as carbon and nitrogen source. However, it is not clear if this potential also helps to lower cyanide concentrations in roadside soils where deicing salt application leads to significant inputs of ferrocyanide. The question remains if biodegradation in soils can occur without previous photolysis. By conducting a microcosm experiment using soils with/without pr

Bacterial communities associated with a mineral weathering profile at a sulphidic mine tailings dump in arid Western Australia.

We investigated bacterial community assemblages and functions down a hill slope contaminated by tailings from a volcanogenic massive sulphide mine in arid Western Australia. Weathering of waste rock, high in S and Fe, had resulted in a varying elemental dispersal down a face of the tailings hill. Bacterial community assemblage, characterised by PCR-DGGE fingerprinting, was significantly associated with electrical conductivity (E.C.) (ρ = 0.664; P < 0.01). Analysis of mobile salts showed that E.C. values were driven by ionic S, Zn, Cl and Al. The bacterial community assemblage was directly char

Soil fertility impact on recruitment and diversity of the soil microbiome in sub-humid tropical pastures in Northeastern Brazil.

Soil fertility is key point to pastures systems and drives the microbial communities and their functionality. Therefore, an understanding of the interaction between soil fertility and microbial communities can increase our ability to manage pasturelands and maintain their soil functioning and productivity. This study probed the influence of soil fertility on microbial communities in tropical pastures in Brazil. Soil samples, gathered from the top 20 cm of twelve distinct areas with diverse fertility levels, were analyzed via 16S rRNA sequencing. The soils were subsequently classified into two

Adaptation of Rhizosphere Microbial Communities to Continuous Exposure to Multiple Residual Antibiotics in Vegetable Farms.

The constant application of manure-based fertilizers in vegetable farms leads to antibiotic residue accumulation in soils, which has become a major stressor affecting agroecosystem stability. The present study investigated the adaptation profiles of rhizosphere microbial communities in different vegetable farms to multiple residual antibiotics. Multiple antibiotics, including trimethoprim, sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines, macrolides, lincomycins, and chloramphenicols, were detected in the vegetable farms; the dominant antibiotic (trimethoprim) had a maximum concentration of 36.7 ng/g.

Antibiotic Resistome Biomarkers associated to the Pelagic Sediments of the Gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea.

Antibiotic resistance has been one of the most persistent global issue. Specifically, marine microbiomes have served as complex reservoirs of antibiotic resistant genes. Molecular advancements have enabled exploration of the uncultured microbial portion from hitherto difficult to sample niches such as deeper oceans. The Gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula have been known for their unique properties like extreme tidal variations, different sediment textures and physicochemical variations. Pelagic sediment cores across four coordinates each of the Gulf of Kutch, Gulf of Khambhat and an open Arabian Sea

Pulmonary microbiota-associated formononetin modulates microglial activation in asthma-related anxiety.

Asthma is frequently accompanied by anxiety disorders, yet the mechanisms linking asthma to neuropsychiatric symptoms remain poorly defined. Here, we investigated the contribution of the pulmonary microbiota and its metabolites to anxiety-like behavior in an ovalbumin-induced asthma mouse model. Behavioral testing and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed anxiety-like phenotypes and altered hippocampal function in a subset of asthmatic mice that were susceptible to anxiety-like behavior. These mice exhibited hippocampal neuroinflammation and neuronal damage, accompanied
