Antimicrobial effect of fluorides on Bacteroides melaninogenicus subspecies and Bacteroides asaccharolyticus.

This study was undertaken to determine whether the suspected periodontopathogens Bacteroides melaninogenicus ss melaninogenicus and intermedius and Bacteroides asaccharolyticus are killed by clinically used topical fluorides. The viability of each organism was examined after exposure to three fluoride compounds, stannous (SnF2), acidulated phosphate (APF), and neutral sodium (NaF), for 1 and 8 h. Stannous fluoride was found to be effective at lowest fluoride concentrations with APF next in effectiveness. NaF required the highest concentrations of fluoride to kill test organisms. Laboratory effectiveness of different types of fluoride compounds.

The enamel solubility reducing characteristics of four fluorides -- sodium fluoride (NaF), acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF), stannous fluoride (SnF2), and sodium monofluorophosphate (Na2PO3F), each prepared to contain 1.23 per cent F are evaluated. Initial solubility reduction by SnF2, 81.7 per cent was significantly (P less than .01) higher than that of 76.9 per cent provided by APF, however, after repeated exposure to acid etches the protection by APF became significantly (P less than .01) higher than that derived from SnF2. The durability of protection provided by SnF2 after overnight wa

Enhanced penetration of fluoride particles into bovine enamel by combining dielectrophoresis with AC electroosmosis.

Fluoride deposition into the pores of enamel is necessary at high concentrations to reduce enamel demineralization and with a high degree of penetration to account for loss by ingestion. Current diffusion and electrochemical methods are inadequate for effectively transporting fluoride greater than 20 μm into enamel. The study explores the coupling of dielectrophoresis (DEP) and AC electroosmosis (ACEO) to selectively concentrate fluoride particles from fluoride gel excipients and enhance their penetration into enamel. By measuring the frequency response of approximately 10-μm-sized sodium fluo

Deposition of loosely bound and firmly bound fluorides on tooth enamel by an acidic gel containing fluorosilicate and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate.

The amounts of loosely bound fluoride (F) deposited on human enamel by 4-min and 2-hour treatments with either acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) or a monocalcium phosphate monohydrate and sodium hexafluorosilicate (MCPM-SHFS)-containing gel were measured with the use of a constant-composition F washing method. Enamel biopsies conducted before treatment and after washing were used to determine the firmly bound F uptake. The results showed that the MCPM-SHFS treatments produced significantly more loosely bound F than did the APF treatments. The 4-min treatment with either APF or MCPM-SHFS did

Fluoride deposited by topical applications with stannous fluoride in human enamel.

The aim of this study was to quantify the fluoridating effect of a 4% aqueous solution of SnF2 applied for 5 min. and 30 min. resp., and to measure the amounts of KOH soluble fluoride and acquired fluoride separately (APF gel data being included for comparison). Blocks of intact enamel were treated with the topical agents and subsequently exposed to 1 M KOH solutions for 24 h. No significant amount of fluoride was dissolved from control specimens by this treatment. Subsequently, the acquired F in the enamel was determined by the acid etch technique. The amount of fluoride in the KOH solutions

Longevity of Enamel Fluoride Reservoirs Formed after Fluoride Application: An in situ Study.

INTRODUCTION: Professional fluorides form reaction products on tooth substrates, which once dissolved, interfere with the caries process. However, the persistence of these reservoirs before the need of a new application is unknown. We investigated in situ the effect of various cariogenic challenges and exposure to fluoride toothpaste on the retention of enamel fluoride reservoirs. METHODS: In a blind, 4-period crossover study, 12 participants wore palatal devices containing human enamel slabs previously treated with one application of acidulated phosphate fluoride gel. No biofilm or biofilm a

Application of fluoride iontophoresis to improve remineralization.

Iontophoresis is generally used to maximize the therapeutic action of drugs in medicine. This technique can be used to improve the remineralization effect of topical fluoride applications in dentistry. The aim of this study was to compare the remineralization effect of fluoride iontophoresis (FI) with the conventional fluoride application (CFA) method in vitro. Sixty bovine enamel specimens were divided into three groups: no fluoride treatment, CFA and FI. Fluoride was applied to the demineralized specimens for 4 min in each experimental group. The types of fluoride system used for application

Treatment and posttreatment effects of chewable fluoride tablets on dental caries: findings after 7 1/2 years.

The data from the Wayne County study indicate that administration of fluoride tablets in school should be recommended in nonfluoridated areas as an effective public health measure for the prevention of dental caries. The finding that benefits persist for at least 1 1/2 years after treatment is discontinued further accentuates the public health appeal of the procedure. As the data show no clear-cut superiority in posttreatment benefits for two fluoride tablets a day, a single tablet daily can be recommended as more suitable for school programs because of lower cost and greater feasibility.

Recommendations on Topical Fluoride Usage for Caries Management in East Asia.

Dental caries is a widespread oral health issue in Asia, affecting an estimated 30% to 90% of children and adults. Many caries cases remain untreated, resulting in pain and infection. In response, the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry (AAPD) emphasises comprehensive caries management and organised a fluoride workshop at the 15th International Conference of the AAPD in 2023. The AAPD invited a group of experts to form a fluoride working group to review existing literature and develop fluoride recommendations for stakeholders across Asian countries and regions. The working group assessed car

Ammonium hexafluorosilicate increased acid resistance of bovine enamel and dentine.

Although diamine silver fluoride (AgF: (NH3)2AgF) stains teeth black, it is known as a very effective agent to prevent the dental caries progress. In order to find another fluoride that has a similar anticariogenic effect without changing tooth color, we prepared ammonium hexafluorosilicate (SiF: (NH4)2SiF6), in which the silver of AgF is replaced with silicon. In this study, the anticariogenic effect of SiF was evaluated using bovine teeth. Fluoride solutions, SiF, AgF, acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF), and sodium fluoride (NaF), were applied to bovine enamel and dentine blocks, and the de
