Vowel Acoustics as Predictors of Speech Intelligibility in Dysarthria.

PURPOSE: This study sought to determine if alternative vowel space area (VSA) measures (i.e., novel trajectory-based measures: vowel space hull area and vowel space density) predicted speech intelligibility to the same extent as two traditional vowel measures (i.e., token-based measures: VSA and corner dispersion) in speakers with dysarthria. Additionally, this study examined if the strength of the relationship between acoustic vowel measures and intelligibility differed based on how intelligibility was measured (i.e., orthographic transcriptions [OTs] and visual analog scale [VAS] ratings).

A procedure for estimating gestural scores from speech acoustics.

Speech can be represented as a constellation of constricting vocal tract actions called gestures, whose temporal patterning with respect to one another is expressed in a gestural score. Current speech datasets do not come with gestural annotation and no formal gestural annotation procedure exists at present. This paper describes an iterative analysis-by-synthesis landmark-based time-warping architecture to perform gestural annotation of natural speech. For a given utterance, the Haskins Laboratories Task Dynamics and Application (TADA) model is employed to generate a corresponding prototype ge

Acoustics based assessment of respiratory diseases using GMM classification.

The focus of this paper is to present a method utilizing lung sounds for a quantitative assessment of patient health as it relates to respiratory disorders. In order to accomplish this, applicable traditional techniques within the speech processing domain were utilized to evaluate lung sounds obtained with a digital stethoscope. Traditional methods utilized in the evaluation of asthma involve auscultation and spirometry, but utilization of more sensitive electronic stethoscopes, which are currently available, and application of quantitative signal analysis methods offer opportunities of improv

Vowel acoustics in dysarthria: speech disorder diagnosis and classification.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which vowel metrics are capable of distinguishing healthy from dysarthric speech and among different forms of dysarthria. METHOD: A variety of vowel metrics were derived from spectral and temporal measurements of vowel tokens embedded in phrases produced by 45 speakers with dysarthria and 12 speakers with no history of neurological disease. Via means testing and discriminant function analysis (DFA), the acoustic metrics were used to (a) detect the presence of dysarthria and (b) classify the dysarthria subtype. RESULTS: Signifi

Acoustics in educational settings. Subcommittee on Acoustics in Educational Settings of the Bioacoustics Standards and Noise Standards Committee American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (enacted July 26, 1990) has brought into focus the need for removing barriers and improving accessibility of all buildings and facilities. It is clear that the definition of barrier must be expanded to include not only structural features that limit physical accessibility, but also acoustical barriers that limit access to communication and information. Acoustical interference caused by inappropriate levels of background noise and reverberation presents a barrier to learning and communication in educational settings and school-sponsored extracurricular activi

Ultrasonic Vocalization Acoustics After Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury and Recovery.

OBJECTIVES: The lack of well-defined functional acoustic correlates of vocal fold paralysis in animal models creates challenges for translating basic science studies of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury to patients with vocal fold paralysis. Capitalizing on natural communicative rodent ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), this study aimed to (1) investigate the impact of RLN injury on USV acoustics in both acute and chronic stages of RLN injury and (2) to identify USV parameters with the greatest ecological validity specific to RLN injury. METHODS: USVs were recorded over 2 weeks (acute) in

Computational Modeling of Fluid-Structure-Acoustics Interaction during Voice Production.

The paper presented a three-dimensional, first-principle based fluid-structure-acoustics interaction computer model of voice production, which employed a more realistic human laryngeal and vocal tract geometries. Self-sustained vibrations, important convergent-divergent vibration pattern of the vocal folds, and entrainment of the two dominant vibratory modes were captured. Voice quality-associated parameters including the frequency, open quotient, skewness quotient, and flow rate of the glottal flow waveform were found to be well within the normal physiological ranges. The analogy between the

Acoustics: the vocal tract and the sound of a didgeridoo.

The Australian didgeridoo (or yidaki in the Yolngu language of northern Australia) is a simple musical instrument that, at the lips of an experienced player, is capable of a spectacular variety of timbres--considerably greater than those that can be coaxed from orchestral instruments, for example. To understand this phenomenon, we simultaneously measured the sound produced by the didgeridoo and the acoustic impedance of the player's vocal tract. We find that the maxima in the envelope of the sound spectrum are associated with minima in the impedance of the vocal tract, as measured just inside

Obstruent production by hearing-impaired speakers: interarticulator timing and acoustics.

This study examines the organization of laryngeal control and interarticulator timing in the production of obstruents and obstruent clusters by three severely-profoundly deaf adults. Glottal activity was monitored by transillumination; temporal patterns of oral articulation (lips and tongue-palate) were recorded using an electrical transconductance technique. For each of the deaf speakers, an inappropriate abduction gesture was often found between words, a pattern never observed for hearing speakers. At the same time, the deaf speakers differed from each other with respect to types of errors,

Characterization of upper esophageal sphincter pressures relative to vocal acoustics.

Strength of vocal fold adduction has been hypothesized to be a critical factor influencing vocal acoustics but has been difficult to measure directly during phonation. Recent work has suggested that upper esophageal sphincter (UES) pressure, which can be easily assessed, increases with stronger vocal fold adduction, raising the possibility that UES pressure might indirectly reflect vocal fold adduction strength. However, concurrent UES pressure and vocal acoustics have not previously been examined across different vocal tasks. Doing so may offer insights into the potential use of UES pressure

Acoustics Features of Voice in Adolescent Females With Anorexia Nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The process of human voice production is a complex physiological and acoustic phenomenon that depends on many structural, physical, and hormonal factors, systemic diseases as well as emotional states. All these factors can be present in eating disorders. However, studies on eating disorders and voice problems have usually been evaluated in terms of bulimia. Chronic starvation and emotional problems in the course of anorexia nervosa (AN) appear to be under-researched, despite various biochemical, metabolic, and hormonal changes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluat

Education in basic acoustics for acoustic phonetics and speech science.

Students in acoustic phonetics and speech science classes often do not have much technical background; an intuitive means to teach acoustic phenomena to them would, thus, be useful. Regarding speech production, physical demonstrations using vocal-tract models have been shown to be an intuitive way to teach acoustic phenomena. In particular, a series of models for different purposes has been developed by Arai over the last 20+ years, including lung models, sound sources, and vocal-tract models, e.g., see Arai [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131(3), 2444-2454 (2012)]. Different combinations of these models

Objective Assessment of Porcine Voice Acoustics for Laryngeal Surgical Modeling.

Pigs have become important animal models in voice research. Several objective parameters exist to characterize the pig voice, but it is not clear which of them are sensitive to the impaired voice quality after laryngeal injury or surgery. In order to conduct meaningful voice research in pigs, it is critical to have standard functional voice outcome measures that can distinguish between normal and impaired voices. For this reason, we investigated 17 acoustic parameters before and early after surgery in three Yucatan mini pigs. Four parameters showed consistent changes between pre- and post-surg

Simulation of bronchial airway acoustics in healthy and asthmatic subjects.

The onset and development of many airway pathologies affect sound propagation throughout the respiratory system; changes in respiratory sounds are detected primarily by auscultation, which is highly skill dependent. The aim of the present study was to compare healthy and asthmatic pulmonary acoustics by applying a 1D model of wave propagation on CT-based patient-specific geometries. High-resolution CT lung images were acquired in five healthy volunteers and five asthmatic patients at total lung capacity (TLC) and functional residual capacity (FRC). Tracheobronchial trees were reconstructed fro

Automated inference of respiratory and syringeal biomechanical trajectories from birdsong acoustics.

Songbirds, in particular zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), provide a powerful model for investigating the neural mechanisms of learned vocal behavior. Researchers typically rely on the acoustic structure of birdsong to quantify vocal behavior. As a more direct measure of motor control, we present VIBE: Vocal acoustic Inversion to Biomechanical Estimates, an open-source pipeline that recovers the biomechanical control parameters of song production from the pitch and amplitude of the acoustic waveform. Biomechanical models of the songbird syrinx describe vocal production with two continuously
