The Botanical Monoterpenes Linalool and Eugenol Flush-Out Nymphs of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Monoterpenes are the main components of essential oils. Some members of this chemical family present insecticidal activity. Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of Chagas disease in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Perú. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of six monoterpenes (1,8-cineole, eugenol, linalool, menthol, α-terpineol, and thymol) on the locomotor and flushing out activity of T. infestans. A video tracking technique was used to evaluate the locomotor activity of nymphs exposed to different concentrations of these chemicals applied as films on filter paper.

Maize terpene synthase 1 impacts insect behavior via the production of monoterpene volatiles β-myrcene and linalool.

Plant-derived volatiles are important mediators of plant-insect interactions as they can provide cues for host location and quality, or act as direct or indirect defense molecules. The volatiles produced by Zea mays (maize) include a range of terpenes, likely produced by several of the terpene synthases (TPS) present in maize. Determining the roles of specific terpene volatiles and individual TPSs in maize-insect interactions is challenging due to the promiscuous nature of TPSs in vitro and their potential for functional redundancy. In this study, we used metabolite GWAS of a sweetcorn diversi

In vitro evaluation of the monoterpene linalool and the nematophagous fungus Arthrobotrys cladodes, individually and in combination, against gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep.

Anthelmintic resistance has prompted the search for alternative control strategies, such as the use of plant-derived compounds and biological control with nematophagous fungi. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic effect of linalool and its association with the fungus Arthrobotrys cladodes on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. The larvicidal activity of linalool, alone and in combination with A. cladodes conidia, was assessed using the Larval Motility Inhibition Test (LMIT) on infective larvae (L3). Ten (10) experimental groups were designed, each with eight

Phylogenetically distant enzymes localized in cytosol and plastids drive citral biosynthesis in lemongrass.

Citral, a naturally occurring acyclic monoterpene aldehyde, is present in the essential oils of various plants, but only a few produce it in abundance. Despite its importance as a key aroma molecule, knowledge regarding the in-planta biosynthesis of citral and its metabolic origin remains limited. Here, we have elucidated the functions of an alcohol dehydrogenase (CfADH1) and an aldoketo-reductase (CfAKR2b) in citral biosynthesis in lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), one of the most cultivated aromatic crops for its citral-rich essential oil. Expression of both CfADH1 and CfAKR2b showed correl

Linalool oxide: generalist plant based lure for mosquito disease vectors.

BACKGROUND: Lack of effective vaccines and therapeutics for important arboviral diseases such as Rift Valley fever (RVF) and dengue, necessitates continuous monitoring of vector populations for infections in them. Plant-based lures as surveillance tools has the potential of targeting mosquitoes of both sexes and females of varied physiological states; yet such lures are lacking for vectors of these diseases. Here, we present evidence of the effectiveness of linalool oxide (LO), a single plant-based lure previously developed for malaria vectors in trapping RVF vectors, Aedes mcintoshi and Aedes

Influence of extraction methodologies on the analysis of five major volatile aromatic compounds of citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) grown in Thailand.

This paper deals with the systematic comparison of extraction of major volatile aromatic compounds (VACs) of citronella grass and lemongrass by classical microhydrodistillation (MHD), as well as modern accelerated solvent extraction (ASE). Sixteen VACs were identified by GC/MS. GC-flame ionization detection was used for the quantification of five VACs (citronellal, citronellol, geraniol, citral, and eugenol) to compare the extraction efficiency of the two different methods. Linear range, LOD, and LOQ were calculated for the five VACs. Intraday and interday precisions for the analysis of VACs w

In vitro Testing of Trichophyton indotineae Susceptibility to Essential Oil Components Citral and Thymol.

Tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton indotineae infection is a worldwide epidemic and represents a growing challenge, given that many strains of this dermatophyte are resistant to the antifungal drugs (allylamine and azoles) typically used to treat dermatophytosis. Phytochemicals isolated from essential oils are effective alternatives for inhibiting microbial pathogens. In the present study, we performed in vitro susceptibility testing of the phytochemicals citral and thymol against T. indotineae strains, including a multi-drug-resistant isolate. The susceptibility of T. indotineae to citral,

Anti-barnacle activity of novel simple alkyl isocyanides derived from citronellol.

Twenty novel simple alkyl isocyanides derived from citronellol were synthesized and evaluated for their antifouling activity and toxicity against cypris larvae of the barnacle, Balanus amphitrite. The anti-barnacle activity of the synthesized isocyanides was in the EC(50) range of 0.08-1.49 μg ml(-1). Simple isocyanides containing a benzoate and chloro group showed the most potent anti-barnacle activity. In addition, none of the synthesized compounds showed significant toxicity and LC(50) values were <10 μg ml(-1). The LC(50)/EC(50) ratios of almost all of the synthesized compounds were >10(2)

Studies on the autoxidation and sensitizing capacity of the fragrance chemical linalool, identifying a linalool hydroperoxide.

Fragrances are among the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. The two monoterpenes linalool and d-limonene are the most frequently incorporated fragrance chemicals in scented products. Previous studies on d-limonene show that this monoterpene oxidizes on air exposure (autoxidation) and that allergenic oxidation products are formed. Due to structural similarities, linalool might also form allergenic oxidation products on air exposure. The aim of the present study was to study the autoxidation of linalool and to investigate the sensitizing potential of linalool before and after air

Kinetics of the epoxidation of geraniol and model systems by dimethyldioxirane.

The mono-epoxidation of geraniol by dimethyldioxirane was carried out in various solvents. In all cases, the product ratios for the 2,3 and 6,7 mono-epoxides were in agreement with literature values. Kinetic studies were carried out at 23 degrees C in the following dried solvent systems: acetone (k(2) = 1.49 M(-1)s(-1)), carbon tetrachloride/acetone(9/1, k(2)=2.19 M(-1)s(-1)), and methanol/acetone (9/1, k(2) = 17 M(-1)s(-1)). Individual k(2) values were calculated for epoxidation of the 2,3 and 6,7 positions in geraniol. The non-conjugated diene system was modeled employing two simple independ
