International Symposium on Ruminant Physiology: Endocrine adaptations to demanding physiological states in ruminants.

Highly productive ruminants rely on hormonally driven adaptations to prioritize the use of limiting nutrients during the demanding phases of the pregnancy-lactation cycle. Glucose, the predominant oxidative fuel of fetal life and the absolute precursor of mammary lactose synthesis, illustrates the need and benefit of such adaptations. Endocrine mechanisms such as insulin resistance or hypoinsulinemia favor the diversion of maternal glucose to the placenta or mammary gland where uptake is independent of insulin. Research in dairy cows in the 1980s and 1990s identified growth hormone as a periph

Physiological diversity and adaptation of Rhizaria revealed by phylogenomics and comparative transcriptomics.

Protists are vastly diverse, forming over 20 supergroups of the eukaryotic diversity and fulfilling plentiful functions. Rhizaria is a widespread and highly abundant clade comprising important parasites and a huge diversity of free-living heterotrophic predators. Despite the diversity and biogeochemical importance of Rhizaria, our understanding of their physiology and metabolic capabilities remains limited, mainly due to limited genomic and transcriptomic data and methodological challenges associated with cross-species comparative transcriptome analyses. In this study, we assembled 15 transcri

Evidence for sustained physiological adaptation between consecutive exercise bouts at simulated altitude.

Intermittent hypoxia has been used to enhance oxygen delivery in athletes and patients; however, it is unclear whether acute exposure is sufficient to elicit lasting physiologic adaptation(s). The purpose of this study was to evaluate physiologic response(s) to hypobaric-hypoxic (HH) exercise. Nine participants (4 M/5F; 37.9 ± 12.7 yrs.; 174.3 ± 9.4 cm; 75.3 ± 15.9 kg; 24.4 ± 3.4 kg/m2) were exposed to progressively higher simulated altitudes and completed two HH submaximal exercise sessions (~30 min ea., ≥72 h apart) on a cycle ergometer at the first altitude that posed a significant challeng

Physiological and Metabolic Adaptation to Heat Stress at Different Altitudes in Yaks.

Yaks have strong adaptability to extremely cold and hypoxic conditions but are susceptible to high ambient temperature when yaks are raised in low-altitude areas during the high-temperature season. Twenty-four adult male yaks with similar weights and ages were randomly divided into TN (Thermoneutral, altitude = 3464 m), LHS (Light heat stress, altitude = 1960 m), and MHS (Medium heat stress, altitude = 906 m) groups to evaluate adaptation strategies to HS. Non-targeted and targeted metabolomics were applied to investigate the effects of different extents of HS on yaks. LHS- and MHS-yaks showed

Regional physiological adaptation of the central nervous system deiodinases to iodine deficiency.

The goal of the present investigation was to analyze the types 2 (D2) and 3 (D3) iodothyronine deiodinases in various structures within the central nervous system (CNS) in response to iodine deficiency. After 5-6 wk of low-iodine diet (LID) or LID + 2 microg potassium iodide/ml (LID + KI; control), rats' brains were processed for in situ hybridization histochemistry for D2 and D3 mRNA or dissected, frozen in liquid nitrogen, and processed for D2 and D3 activities. LID did not affect weight gain or serum triiodothyronine, but plasma thyroxine (T4) was undetectable. In the LID + KI animals, D3 a

Pregnancy-associated cardiac remodeling: from physiological adaptation to long-term cardiovascular risk.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy imposes a sustained hemodynamic load that can unmask latent cardiovascular vulnerability, yet distinguishing physiological adaptation from early maladaptive remodeling remains difficult with conventional echocardiography. AREAS COVERED: This special report reviews trimester-specific cardiac adaptation, myocardial deformation imaging, right ventricular-pulmonary arterial coupling, postpartum reverse remodeling, and the maladaptive phenotypes of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and peripartum cardiomyopathy. It also covers circulating biomarkers and the risk framework

Revisiting gut microbiota-driven ammonia metabolism: from disease burden to physiological adaptation.

Ammonia homeostasis is governed by interconnected host and microbial pathways, including hepatic ureagenesis, glutamine synthesis, and gut microbiota-mediated urea hydrolysis, proteolysis, and amino acid deamination. Ammonia has historically been viewed primarily as a nitrogenous waste product and neurotoxic molecule, a concept strongly supported by studies of hyperammonemia and hepatic encephalopathy. Impaired hepatic clearance, portosystemic shunting, and enhanced gut-derived ammonia input increase systemic ammonia burden and are linked to neurological dysfunction, muscle wasting, immune dys

Future temperature-related mortality considering physiological and socioeconomic adaptation: a modelling framework.

BACKGROUND: As the climate changes, it is crucial to focus not only on mitigation measures but also on building climate change resilience by developing efficient adaptation strategies. Although population adaptation is a major determinant of future climate-related health burden, it is not well accounted for in studies that project the health impact of climate change. We propose a methodological framework for temperature-related mortality that incorporates two simultaneous adaptation-sensitivity pathways: the physiological pathway, considering both heat adaptation and cold sensitivity, and the

Longitudinal Analysis of Physiological Adaptation in Primiparous Dairy Cows During the Transition Period.

The transition period is a physiologically demanding stage in primiparous dairy cows, as the onset of lactation occurs simultaneously with continued growth. This longitudinal study initially enrolled 22 primiparous Holstein dairy cows. Eight cows that developed transition disorders during the monitoring period were excluded according to the predefined study protocol. Therefore, the final analysis included 14 clinically healthy primiparous Holstein dairy cows monitored from four weeks before calving to five weeks postpartum to characterize normal physiological adaptation during the transition p

Insect adaptation to urban environments: A synthesis of morphological, behavioural, and physiological responses.

Urbanisation is among the most pervasive drivers of contemporary environmental change, imposing a complex suite of abiotic and biotic pressures on insect populations worldwide. Here, we synthesize recent evidence on how insects respond to urban environments across three interconnected axes: morphology, behaviour, and physiology. Urban heat and dry islands, habitat fragmentation, artificial light at night, noise, air and chemical pollution, and novel plant communities act as multidimensional filters that can drive shifts in body size, locomotory appendage, coloration, foraging and mating behavi

Sex differences in climbing endurance emerge from combined physiological adaptation and neural strategies.

BACKGROUND: Sport climbing imposes high endurance demands on finger flexor muscles, which sustain near-isometric loads for prolonged periods. Although women often demonstrate greater muscle endurance than men, the neuromuscular mechanisms underlying potential sex differences in climbing remain unclear. PURPOSE: Determine whether sex differences in climbing endurance are explained by physiological muscle adaptations, neural strategies of motor unit (MU) control, or both. METHODS: High-density surface electromyograms (HD-sEMG) were recorded from the dominant forearm of 9 female and 13 male int

Physiological Adaptation to Plant-Based Diets: A Homeostatic Framework for Sustained Dietary Change.

Plant-based dietary patterns are typically discussed in terms of nutrients of concern-iron, creatine, indispensable amino acids, and rapidly fermented carbohydrates-based on the assumption that reduced dietary exposure necessarily translates into reduced physiological availability. This review examines physiological adaptation as an alternative framework, drawing on human intervention and observational evidence across five biological systems: iron homeostasis, endogenous biosynthesis of creatine and carnosine, protein metabolism, fermentation of dietary fiber by the gut microbiota, and the mic

Mechanisms Underlying Efficient n-Eicosane Degradation and Physiological Adaptation in Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1.

Low temperature limits microbial remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated environments, yet the physiological basis for long-chain alkane degradation under cold stress remains insufficiently understood. In this study, Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1 was cultured with n-eicosane as the sole carbon source at 4°C, 16°C, and 30°C for 5, 10, and 15 days. Degradation performance, growth-associated traits, surface tension, membrane permeability, redox-energy metabolism, key enzyme activities, and putative GC-MS signals were evaluated. KB1 showed the highest n-eicosane degradation efficiency at

Physiological response to exercise in the heat: Implications for risk mitigation and adaptation.

PURPOSE: Recent field studies of physical exertion in challenging environmental conditions have reported dissociation between elevation in body core temperature (Tc) and successful task completion. This prompted us to further examine physiological mechanisms that might underlie variability in the response to exertional heat exposure. We hypothesized that, in response to exercise in the heat, systematic differences in central and peripheral physiological variables would be apparent between participants who successfully completed the task, versus those who became hyperthermic or symptomatic. Physiological mechanisms of onset adaptation and contralateral suppression of DPOAEs in the rat.

An investigation was undertaken to measure medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflexes in anesthetized rats before and after sectioning of the middle-ear muscles. Distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) magnitude and phase temporal responses were measured ipsilaterally to study MOC-mediated "DPOAE onset adaptation" and in the presence of a contralateral noise to study MOC-mediated contralateral "suppression" (terms as used by previous researchers). Distortion product otoacoustic emission onset adaptation and contralateral suppression had predictable changes in direction of magnitude and phase

Shaping maternal physiology: Immune control of reproductive adaptation.

Pregnancy is one of the most extensive physiological transitions of adult life, requiring coordinated adaptation across virtually every maternal organ to support fetal growth while preserving maternal health. Although these changes have traditionally been viewed as endocrine driven, emerging evidence identifies the immune system as an active regulator of maternal physiology. The immune system is increasingly recognized as a broad regulator of host physiology, positioning it as a key driver of maternal adaptation. In this work, we discuss how pregnancy reprograms maternal immunity to orchestrat

Adaptive physiological processes in the host during gastrointestinal parasitism.

Parasite infection of the gastrointestinal tract with helminths or protozoa induces detrimental effects on host tissues and host physiology, which have been extensively studied and reviewed. However, parasitism of the digestive system is also associated with adaptive, compensatory phenomena based on changes in host physiology or structures and which tend to counterbalance the negative consequences. The objective of this review is to describe these adaptive processes and their possible underlying mechanisms. Different processes which tend to attenuate the effect of either the loss of appetite,

Adaptation to extreme environments: A review of Antarctic fish physiology.

Having evolved in the chronically cold and thermally stable waters of the Southern Ocean (SO) for millions of years, Antarctic fish possess a suite of physiological specializations that enable them to survive at temperatures near the freezing point of seawater. Adaptations include the evolution of antifreeze proteins, modifications of membrane composition, altered metabolic processes, unique mechanisms of oxygen transport and utilization, and distinctive cellular stress responses. This review synthesizes current knowledge of the physiological adaptations of Antarctic fish, focusing on the mech
