Trajectories of Psychological Adaptation to Marital Breakup after a Long-Term Marriage.

BACKGROUND: Marital dissolution is known to be among the most stressful life events with long-reaching negative consequences on individuals' lives. A limitation in research to date is that most studies have focused on the impact of marital disruption on well-being outcomes in younger adults. Furthermore, although population-based studies on divorce document a broad range of negative effects, more fine-grained analyses reveal a large heterogeneity in people's adjustment, which is still not well understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to explore trajectories of psychological adaptation to marital br

Psychological adaptation after marital disruption: the effects of optimism and perceived control.

The present study explored the extent to which the two personality factors--perceived control and dispositional optimism--are related to psychological adaptation after marital disruption. A sample of 658 recently divorced individuals participated in the study by filling in an anonymous questionnaire. Bivariate findings revealed that perceived control and optimism were strongly related to psychological adaptation. However, when both predictors were included in a multiple regression analysis, optimism had a much larger effect than perceived control. The findings clearly indicate that personality

Psychological Adaptation During Prolonged War-Related Stress in Ukraine: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Civilian populations exposed to prolonged stress, loss, illness, displacement, and other uncontrollable life events demonstrate substantial variability in psychological adaptation. Contemporary research suggests that psychological outcomes are influenced not only by the severity of adversity but also by patterns of cognitive-emotional processing, including locus of control, rumination, self-compassion, and meaning-making. The ongoing war in Ukraine represents a distinct context in which civilians must adapt not after the cessation of trauma, but while recurrent threat, dis

Psychological adaptation of siblings of chronically ill children: research and practice implications.

Studies of the psychological adjustment of physically healthy siblings to their sibling's chronic illness indicate that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the presence of a chronic illness and risk for psychological disturbance in nonafflicted children. Although the presence of a chronic illness may increase siblings' subjective distress, effects of a chronic illness on the psychological adjustment of siblings are selective and vary with age, sex, and type of illness. Chronic illness is a stressor which, in interaction with other variables, may contribute to increased risk of psycho

Role of Sports Motivation and Basic Psychological Needs in the Relationship Between Child Maltreatment and Psychological Adaptation in Adolescents.

Child maltreatment poses serious consequences, while sports participation among adolescents offers a potential avenue for mitigating such consequences. This study, based on self-determination theory (SDT), examines the associations among child maltreatment, sports motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic), and satisfaction or frustration of basic psychological needs (BPNs). This study also investigated the mediating role of sports motivation in the relationship between child maltreatment and psychological adaptation. Adolescents engaged in sports were derived from the first wave of a large two-wave

Psychological and Biomechanical Aspects of Patient Adaptation to Diabetic Neuropathy and Foot Ulceration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review was to elucidate how psychological and biomechanical factors interrelate in shaping patients' experience with diabetic symmetric polyneuropathy (DSPN) and its sequela-diabetic foot ulceration (DFU). RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings emphasize the importance not only of neuropathic pain but also of other DSPN symptoms, such as unsteadiness. We highlight the negative spiral between unsteadiness, falls, and psychological distress. Moreover, unsteadiness is a key determinant of non-adherence to offloading resulting in the delayed DFU healing. While dep

Psychological flexibility is not associated with cardiovascular stress-response adaptation to recurrent stress.

Psychological flexibility is a dynamic psychological construct representing a dispositional pattern of adaptive responding to changing situational demands and is associated with positive psychological functioning and stress resilience. Despite its relevance to stress regulation, it remains unclear whether psychological flexibility is associated with physiological indicators of stress adaptation. The present study examined whether psychological flexibility was associated with cardiovascular responses to, and adaptation following, repeated stress exposure. A total of 140 female participants unde

The effects of trait resilience and rumination on psychological adaptation to breast cancer.

This cross-sectional study examined the effect of trait resilience and specific types of rumination on positive psychological adaptation post-diagnosis among 201 breast cancer patients. They completed self-reported measures describing trait resilience, rumination, posttraumatic growth, and health-related quality of life. Hierarchical analysis showed that trait resilience significantly predicted higher quality of life and posttraumatic growth after controlling for demographic and clinical variables. Additionally, "intrusion" and "brooding" subtypes of rumination negatively predicted quality of

Social-adaptive and psychological functioning of patients affected by Fabry disease.

Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A. In addition to the debilitating physical symptoms of FD, there are also under-recognized and poorly characterized psychiatric features. As a first step toward characterizing psychiatric features of FD, we administered the Achenbach adult self report questionnaire to 30 FD patients and the Achenbach adult behavior checklist questionnaire to 28 partners/parents/friends of FD patients. Data from at least one of the questionnaires were available on 33 subjects. Analysis focused on social

Psychological reactions to radiation therapy: reconsideration of the adaptive aspects of anxiety.

A common form of cancer treatment is radiation therapy. In this investigation individual differences in the psychological reactions of 45 patients undergoing external treatment were examined in the context of the Janis (1958) and linear decline models (e.g., Spielberger, Auerbach, Wadworth, Dunn, & Taulbee, 1973) of medical stressor anxiety. Evaluation included pre- and postradiation assessments of the subjects' state and trait anxiety, somatic complaints, and treatment side effects. Technologists administering the daily treatments assessed behavioral indicants of affective distress. Data anal

Physiological and psychological adaptations to 13 days of apnea training in novice apneists.

Trained apneists such as freedivers have an augmented apnea-induced bradycardic response compared to novice apneists. We hypothesized that (1) our short-term apnea training protocol would extend the duration of the easy-going and struggle apnea phases while augmenting bradycardia, (2) central command is the mechanism responsible for augmented bradycardia, and (3) the response to a psychological stressor would be attenuated post-training. 22 participants without previous apnea training underwent 13 days of training, which included daily apneas alongside targeted psychological coaching, with in-
