Adaptive Pump Speed Algorithms to Improve Exercise Capacity in Patients Supported with a Left-Ventricular Assist Device.

For the treatment of terminal heart failure, the therapy with left-ventricular assist devices has already been established. In the systems used today, pump speed does not adjust during physical activity so that cardiac output and exercise capacity remain markedly limited. It is the aim of this study to develop an automatic pump speed control based on filling pressure values in order to improve exercise capacity and quality of life in these patients. Different approaches are planned, to be tested in an in vitro patient simulator. The algorithms aim to match the pump speed with the increased ven

Multimodal deep learning and genetic algorithms for adaptive optimization of injection stretch blow molding with nonconformal temperature control.

In blow molding with non-conformal temperature control, changes in environmental thermal conditions can affect product quality even when machine settings remain unchanged. Conventional studies often rely on offline quality evaluation or physics-based simulations, which are computationally expensive and difficult to deploy for in-situ process adjustment. This study proposes an in-situ adaptive optimization framework that integrates multimodal deep learning with a genetic algorithm. Thermal images, lamp temperature settings, and environmental variables are used to predict the post-heating prefor

Edge-assisted adaptive offloading algorithm for 3D object detection tasks.

Multimodal 3D object detection is crucial for autonomous systems but suffers from high delay due to significant computational demands. To address this, we propose an edge computing-assisted framework that balances load between terminal devices and edge servers. We introduce dynamic threshold tuning and resolution-adaptive offloading algorithms to optimize performance. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces delay by minimizing offloading frequency while maintaining high accuracy, achieving a superior delay-accuracy trade-off. Furthermore, the framework exhibits

A Locomotion Mode Recognition Algorithm Using Adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitives.

Control systems of robotic prostheses should be designed to decode the users' intent to start, stop, or change locomotion; and to select the suitable control strategy, accordingly. This paper describes a locomotion mode recognition algorithm based on adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitive models used as locomotion templates. The models take foot-ground contact information and thigh roll angle, measured by an inertial measurement unit, for generating continuous model variables to extract features for a set of Support Vector Machines. The proposed algorithm was tested offline on data acquired from

Self-adaptation of mutation operator and probability for permutation representations in genetic algorithms.

The choice of mutation rate is a vital factor in the success of any genetic algorithm (GA), and for permutation representations this is compounded by the availability of several alternative mutation operators. It is now well understood that there is no one "optimal choice"; rather, the situation changes per problem instance and during evolution. This paper examines whether this choice can be left to the processes of evolution via self-adaptation, thus removing this nontrivial task from the GA user and reducing the risk of poor performance arising from (inadvertent) inappropriate decisions. Adaptive image encryption approach using an enhanced swarm intelligence algorithm.

Chaos-based encryption methods have gained popularity due to the unique properties of chaos. The performance of chaos-based encryption methods is highly impacted by the values of initial and control parameters. Therefore, this work proposes Iterative Cosine operator-based Hippopotamus Optimization (ICO-HO) to select optimal parameters for chaotic maps, which is further used to design an adaptive image encryption approach. ICO-HO algorithm improves the Hippopotamus Optimization (HO) by integrating a new phase (Phase 4) to update the position of the hippopotamus. ICO-HO updates the position of h

Can pregnancy-adapted algorithms avoid diagnostic imaging for pulmonary embolism?

The low prevalence of pulmonary embolism (PE) among pregnant patients presenting with suspected PE implies that most of these patients will be found not have the disease. Given this low prevalence, excluding PE in this population has necessitated the use of sensitive and specific diagnostic imaging, such as computed tomography pulmonary angiography or ventilation-perfusion scanning. Recent studies suggest that a clinical prediction rule with D-dimer testing can also be used to exclude a subset of pregnant patients with suspected PE without the need for diagnostic imaging. The YEARS criteria, w

Study of In-Vehicle Ethernet Message Scheduling Based on the Adaptive Frame Segmentation Algorithm.

With the rapid development of intelligent driving technology, in-vehicle bus networks face increasingly stringent requirements for real-time performance and data transmission. Traditional bus network technologies such as LIN, CAN, and FlexRay are showing significant limitations in terms of bandwidth and response speed. In-Vehicle Ethernet, with its advantages of high bandwidth, low latency, and high reliability, has become the core technology for next-generation in-vehicle communication networks. This study focuses on bandwidth waste caused by guard bands and the limitations of Frame Pre-Empti

Path planning of industrial robots based on the adaptive field cooperative sampling algorithm.

For the low efficiency and poor generalization ability of path planning algorithm of industrial robots, this work proposes an adaptive field co-sampling algorithm (AFCS). Firstly, the environment complexity function is proposed to make full use of environment information and improve its generalization ability of the traditional rapidly random search tree algorithm (RRT) algorithm. Then an optimal sampling strategy is proposed to make the improvement of the efficiency and optimal direction of RRT algorithm. Finally, this article designs a collaborative extension strategy, which introduces the i

Adaptive border marching algorithm: automatic lung segmentation on chest CT images.

Segmentation of the lungs in chest-computed tomography (CT) is often performed as a preprocessing step in lung imaging. This task is complicated especially in presence of disease. This paper presents a lung segmentation algorithm called adaptive border marching (ABM). Its novelty lies in the fact that it smoothes the lung border in a geometric way and can be used to reliably include juxtapleural nodules while minimizing oversegmentation of adjacent regions such as the abdomen and mediastinum. Our experiments using 20 datasets demonstrate that this computational geometry algorithm can re-includ

An adaptive interval-based algorithm for withholding ICD therapy during sinus tachycardia.

Avoiding inappropriate ICD therapy during supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) while assuring 100% sensitivity for VT/VF remains a challenge. Inappropriate VT/VF therapy during sinus tachycardia (ST) is particularly distressing to the patient because the full sequence of ICD therapies is often delivered. ST or 1:1 atrial tachycardia (AT) with long PR intervals and ST or AT with atrial oversensing of far-field R waves cause the majority of inappropriate therapy in the Medtronic GEM DR (Model 7271) ICD. The goals of the present effort were to define an adaptive interval-based algorithm for withhol

A Sliding Scale AdaptiVe Expedited rescue algorithm for deceased donor kidney transplantation.

The nonuse rate of deceased donor kidneys has increased significantly. The National Organ Transplantation Act requires sequential organ allocation to candidates, which is inefficient for medically complex organs because it increases cold ischemic time and contributes to organ decline. A novel Sliding Scale AdaptiVe Expedited rescue algorithm for deceased donor kidney transplantation was developed that uses the nonuse rate to determine a rescue trigger threshold. Once triggered, allocation occurs in sequential batches, sized proportionately to the nonuse rate. Using the validated organ allocati

CMA-unfold: A covariance matrix adaptation unfolding algorithm for stacked calorimeter detectors.

Stacking calorimeters, also referred to as bremsstrahlung cannons, widely used in inertial confinement fusion and ultra-intense laser plasma experiments, have become essential diagnostics for characterizing short bursts of high-energy photons and charged particles. Extracting the underlying energy spectrum from these detectors requires solving an ill-posed inverse problem, often complicated by noise, secondary particle contamination, and uncertainties in the detector response. In this work, we introduce an open-source unfolding framework (ggfauvel/CMA-unfold) [ggfauvel/CMA-unfold: Initial Publ

Time-reversal symmetry adaptation in relativistic density matrix renormalization group algorithm.

In the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation, the total spin S and spin projection M are good quantum numbers. In contrast, spin symmetry is lost in the presence of spin-dependent interactions, such as spin-orbit couplings in relativistic Hamiltonians. Therefore, the relativistic density matrix renormalization group algorithm (R-DMRG) only employing particle number symmetry is much more expensive than nonrelativistic DMRG. In addition, artificial breaking of Kramers degeneracy can happen in the treatment of systems with an odd number of electrons. To overcome these issues, we propose time-rever

Prediction of cardiovascular risk in rheumatoid arthritis: performance of original and adapted SCORE algorithms.

OBJECTIVES: Predictive performance of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk calculators appears suboptimal in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A disease-specific CVD risk algorithm may improve CVD risk prediction in RA. The objectives of this study are to adapt the Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) algorithm with determinants of CVD risk in RA and to assess the accuracy of CVD risk prediction calculated with the adapted SCORE algorithm. METHODS: Data from the Nijmegen early RA inception cohort were used. The primary outcome was first CVD events. The SCORE algorithm was recalibrated by reweigh

A systematic review of local field potential physiomarkers in Parkinson's disease: from clinical correlations to adaptive deep brain stimulation algorithms.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment has proven effective in suppressing symptoms of rigidity, bradykinesia, and tremor in Parkinson's disease. Still, patients may suffer from disabling fluctuations in motor and non-motor symptom severity during the day. Conventional DBS treatment consists of continuous stimulation but can potentially be further optimised by adapting stimulation settings to the presence or absence of symptoms through closed-loop control. This critically relies on the use of 'physiomarkers' extracted from (neuro)physiological signals. Ideal physiomarkers for adaptive DBS (aDB

ASCA-YOLO: Adaptive Sparse and Context-Aware YOLO Algorithm for Forest Wildfire Detection.

Combining Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing with computer vision has become an efficient approach to detect forest wildfires. Nevertheless, existing methods still face several challenges, including missed detection of small fire spots and slender smoke under limited computational resources, false alarms caused by complex forest backgrounds, and insufficient adaptability to the irregular and dynamic morphology of fire and smoke. To address these issues, an improved YOLO26-based model, termed ASCA-YOLO, is proposed. Specifically, FWAMSConv module is introduced to improve multi-scale i
