KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Adenosarcoma of the uterine cervix should be considered in the evaluation of post-menopausal bleeding, as it can be a potential underlying cause. Timely diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to optimize patient outcomes.
ABSTRACT: Adenosarcoma is a biphasic neoplasm comprising both a benign epithelial component and a typically low-grade sarcomatous stromal component. Adenosarcoma mainly affects the endometrium (71%), with a lesser incidence in the cervix (2%). Herein, the authors report a case of adenosarcoma of the uterine cervix with distinct gross feature

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to provide the management and outcome of three patients who presented with uterine Müllerian adenosarcoma associated with extrauterine metastases.
METHODS: A retrospective study of three patients who were referred to our hospital was performed. One patient was referred because of vaginal metastatic deposits that were noted during investigations for primary infertility. The other two were referred because of abnormal vaginal bleeding; one of these had a large polyp protruding through her cervix into the vagina.
RESULTS: In two patients the preoperative dia

Uterine adenosarcoma is an uncommon biphasic tumor with benign epithelial and malignant mesenchymal components, often presenting difficulties for morphological diagnosis. We describe 5 cases of adenosarcoma of the uterine corpus and cervix, and vaginal stump in patients aged 46-76 years. Clinical data, ultrasound results, morphological data, including immunohistochemical studies with antibodies to CD10, estrogen and progesterone receptors, desmin, smooth muscle actin, and Ki-67 are presented. Large polypoid mass of the epithelial-mesenchymal structure within the uterine cavity in women of peri

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of uterine mullerian adenosarcoma.
METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 9 cases of uterine mullerian adenosarcoma in PUMC hospital from January 2003 to February 2009 were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: There were 6 uterine endometrial adenosarcomas and 3 cervical adenosarcomas. The main clinical manifestations were abnormal vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain. Physical examination showed cervical/vaginal mass, enlarged uterus or pelvic mass. The adenosarcoma was characterized by benign or atypic

Extrauterine adenosarcoma is very rare and originates in the ovary, adnexa, or myometrium. Cytologic study of ascites is very important to determine clinical staging of malignant ovarian tumors and provide adequate therapy for recurrence. The cytomorphologic features of adenosarcoma have been only rarely described. A 77-yr-old woman visited a hospital with a complaint of lower abdominal pain for 1 mo. A tumor originating from the right adnexa in the pelvis, and involving the rectum, was found in surgery. In the ascitic fluid cytology, a few dispersed tumor cells with large cytoplasm and nuclei

BACKGROUND: Müllerian adenosarcoma is a rare morphologic variant of uterine sarcoma that, although well described histologically, is scarcely mentioned in the cytologic literature.
CASE: A 75-year-old female was suspected of having atypical endometrial hyperplasia on an endometrial smear. However, subsequent imaging techniques revealed the presence of a bulky, polypoid mass filling the uterine cavity. On pathologic examination of the hysterectomy specimen, the polypoid tumor was diagnosed as mullerian adenosarcoma, homologous, with sarcomatous overgrowth, in which the sarcomatous component wa

Mullerian adenosarcoma--a variant of mullerian mixed mesodermal tumor of the uterus--is typically composed of benign but sometimes mildly atypical glandular epithelial elements admixed with malignant sarcomatous stroma. This rare tumor, which accounts for only about 8% of all uterine sarcomas, usually originates in the endometrium and grows as a polypoid mass within the endometrial cavity. The most prevailing presenting symptom is abnormal vaginal bleeding and the most common finding is a polypoid mass protruding through a dilated cervical canal. The case of a woman, who at age 62 presented wi

We describe a case of an endocervical heterologous mesodermal adenosarcoma, found in a 43 year old woman. Among mesodermal neoplasms, various histological types are distinguished: the carcinosarcoma, the embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma or botryoid sarcoma, and the adenosarcoma; the last is formed by a benign epithelial component and by a malignant stromal component, that may contain heterologous tissues, such as cartilage, skeletal muscle, etc. Adenosarcoma is a tumor of the uterine corpus and seems to be most common among menopausal women. A primitive adenosarcoma of the uterine cervix is very rar

Uterine adenosarcoma is a rare, low-grade malignant tumor that usually arises from the endometrium and presents as a large polypoid mass occupying the endometrial cavity. A correct histopathological diagnosis of adenosarcoma from a small specimen is often difficult, and pre-operative MR imaging findings are generally not specific enough to establish an adenosarcoma diagnosis. A 60-year-old nulliparous woman was referred to our hospital who presented with vaginal bleeding. Her medical history was notable for type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Upon pelvic examination, a large endometrial

INTRODUCTION: Eighty-five per cent of uterine inversions are puerperal. Non-puerperal uterine inversion is usually caused by tumours that exert a traction force on the fundus of the uterus. This causes the uterus to be partially or completely inverted. It is commonly related to benign tumours like submucosal leiomyomas. Nevertheless, malignancies are an infrequent association.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 35-year-old female patient, medically and surgically free, gravida0 para0, complaining of menometrorrhagia associated with pelvic pain for 2 years. A suprapubic ultrasound scan s

BACKGROUND: Metanephric neoplasms comprised a spectrum of kidney tumors containing renal epithelial or stromal cells or both, including metanephric adenoma, metanephric stromal tumor, and metanephric adenofibroma. The majority of cases were benign; only one case of "metanephric adenosarcoma" had been reported in the English literature.
HISTORY: We present the case of a 69-year-old man who developed a neoplasm composed of renal epithelial component identical to metanephric adenoma combined with malignant spindle-cell stroma. The epithelial component was positive for CD57, AE1/AE3, but negative

RATIONALE: There is little knowledge regarding mullerian adenosarcoma and its metastasizing pattern.
AIM: Our objective was to evaluate the impact on the prognostic of the patient brought by tumor metastasizing to the retroperitoneum, to analyze the particularities of the treatment in such cases and to bring a significant change in the early therapeutic attitude to mullerian adenosarcomas.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a first case report of a hypervascularized retroperitoneal metastasis from an initial low-grade uterine adenosarcoma. The presence of such a metastasis brought the worst pro

Uterine adenosarcomas are uncommon mixed Müllerian neoplasms, most commonly arising in the uterine corpus. A new Federation of International Gynecologic Organization staging system for these tumors has recently been implemented. This staging system is an improvement on the earlier generic application of the 1988 Federation of International Gynecologic Organization staging system for endometrial cancer to adenosarcoma. Herein, we report 3 uterine adenosarcomas with unusual features. For 2 of these, no specific staging guidelines are provided by either the earlier or, more importantly, the new s

OBJECTIVES: Cervical adenofibroma is a rare form of mixed mesodermal tumor that can present as cervical polyps with a tendency for local recurrence and progression. Few cases progressing to adenosarcoma have previously been reported. We report a case of cervical adenofibroma progressing to adenosarcoma, and we seek to remind clinicians of the method and importance of the differential diagnosis of this disease. A fertile woman was admitted in our department for the eighth recurrence of a cervical polypoidal mass which for the past 10 years. Recurrence of cervical adenofibroma was confirmed by u

Uterine adenosarcoma is a rare variant of mixed Mullerian tumors comprised of neoplastic glands with the benign appearance and sarcomatous stroma. The epithelium most often consists of endometrium- like cells, while the sarcomatous component usually shows low-grade homologous uterine sarcoma. These tumors present as a pelvic mass or an enlarged uterus with abnormal vaginal bleeding. Here, we present a case of 61 years old postmenopausal female patient with chief complaints of excessive vaginal bleeding and urine retention.

Uterine adenosarcomas are uncommon tumors. It is a biphasic tumor with both epithelial and mesenchymal component. The epithelial component is benign in nature, and the mesenchymal component is malignant. Metastasis is rare in adenosarcoma. We report a case of adenosarcoma with lymph nodal metastasis. A 20-year-old female presented with history of per vaginal bleeding for 1 month. Per vaginal examination revealed a fungating mass protruding through the cervical os. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large intrauterine mass. Biopsy of the mass done at an outside hospital was

This case report presents a 51-year-old woman with an adenosarcoma of ovarian origin which is a very rare tumor. She came for consultation due to abnormal vaginal bleeding. The case also illustrates the difficulty of its correct diagnosis and discusses the possible reasons of wrong preoperative and intraoperative diagnosis.

We report a case of uterine adenosarcoma demonstrated on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. A 74-year-old woman with a large uterine mass underwent MR examination before total abdominal hysterectomy. Imaging revealed a markedly enlarged uterus with thin myometrium occupied by a large polypoid mass. The mass contained solid components with low intensity on T(1)-weighted images and high intensity on T(2)-weighted images compared to the myometrium and areas of small cysts.

The clinical and pathologic findings in a 53-year-old woman who developed a uterine adenosarcoma following an adenomyoma are described. During the interval between the diagnosis of adenomyoma and the subsequent diagnosis of adenosarcoma, the patient developed breast carcinoma and received adjuvant chemotherapy that included tamoxifen. The possible stimulatory effects of this drug upon the patient's pre-existing adenomyoma are discussed in view of reports of tamoxifen-associated endometrial carcinoma and uterine sarcomas developing in the setting of estrogen excess.

Mullerian adenosarcoma of the cervix with heterologous elements is an extremely rare tumor first described by Roth and colleagues (L. M. Roth, G. L. Pride, and H. M. Sharma, Cancer 37, 1725-1736) in 1976. Since that time there have been only three subsequent reports of these cervical Mullerian adenosarcomas, which seem to occur most often in the postmenarchal age group. Due to the paucity of cases and the unknown biological potential of the tumor, therapy has ranged from simple excision to radical pelvic surgery and vaginectomy combined with both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We report anothe
