Heparin inhibited hemagglutination (HA) by pseudorabies virus (PRV), but not HA by Akabane virus, bovine adenovirus type 7, Fukuoka virus, Getah virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, and parainfluenza virus type 3 belonging to the families Bunyaviridae, Adenoviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Togaviridae, Flavivi-idae, and Paramyxoviridae, respectively. The minimal inhibitory concentration of heparin required to inhibit 8 HA U of PRV ranged from 0.005 to 0.01 U/ml. Mouse erythrocytes failed to combine with the HA inhibitory factor of heparin. On the other hand, mouse erythrocytes treated with heparinase ha

Dendritic cells (DCs) are recognized as highly potent antigen-presenting cells that are able to stimulate cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses with antitumor activity. Consequently, DCs have been explored as cellular vaccines in cancer immunotherapy. To that end, DCs are modified with tumor antigens to enable presentation of antigen-derived peptides to CTLs. In this review we discuss the use of viral vectors for in situ modification of DCs, focusing on their clinical applications as anticancer vaccines. Among the viral vectors discussed are those derived from viruses belonging to the familie

Species within the Neoromicia bat genus are abundant and widely distributed in Africa. It is common for these insectivorous bats to roost in anthropogenic structures in urban regions. Additionally, Neoromicia capensis have previously been identified as potential hosts for Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-related coronaviruses. This study aimed to ascertain the gastrointestinal virome of these bats, as viruses excreted in fecal material or which may be replicating in rectal or intestinal tissues have the greatest opportunities of coming into contact with other hosts. Samples were collect

While recent changes in treatment have reduced the lethality of idiopathic chronic diarrhea (ICD), this condition remains one of the most common causes of rhesus macaque deaths in non-human primate research centers. We compared the viromes in fecal swabs from 52 animals with late stage ICD and 41 healthy animals. Viral metagenomics targeting virus-like particles was used to identify viruses fecally shed by each animal. Five viruses belonging to the Picornaviridae, one to the Caliciviridae, one to the Parvoviridae, and one to the Adenoviridae families were identified. The fraction of reads matc

This study assesses diversity of DNA viruses in the effluents of two membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs): an MBR in the United States and an MBR in France. Viral diversity of these effluents is compared to that of a conventional activated sludge WWTP in the U.S. Diversity analysis indicates Herpesvirales to be the most abundant order of potentially pathogenic human DNA viruses in wastewater treated effluent in all utilities. Other potentially pathogenic human viruses detected include Adenoviridae, Parvoviridae, and Polyomaviridae. Bacteriophage order Caudovirales comp

Heparin is one of the main pharmaceutical products manufactured from raw animal material. In order to describe the viral burden associated with this raw material, we performed high-throughput sequencing (HTS) on mucus samples destined for heparin manufacturing, which were collected from European pigs. We identified Circoviridae and Parvoviridae members as the most prevalent contaminating viruses, together with viruses from the Picornaviridae, Astroviridae, Reoviridae, Caliciviridae, Adenoviridae, Birnaviridae, and Anelloviridae families. Putative new viral species were also identified. The loa

Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is a severe disease of the eye, caused by members of the Adenoviridae (Ad) family, with symptoms such as keratitis, conjunctivitis, pain, edema, and reduced vision that may last for months or years. There are no vaccines or antiviral drugs available to prevent or treat EKC. It was found previously that EKC-causing Ads use sialic acid as a cellular receptor and demonstrated that soluble, sialic acid-containing molecules can prevent infection. In this study, multivalent sialic acid constructs based on 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PDA) have been synthesized, an

The intestinal virus community contributes to health and disease. Runting and stunting syndrome (RSS) is associated with enteric viruses and leads to economic losses in the poultry industry. However, many viruses that potentially cause this syndrome have also been identified in healthy animals. To determine the difference in the virome of healthy and diseased broilers, samples from 11 healthy and 17 affected broiler flocks were collected at two time points and analyzed by Next-Generation Sequencing. Fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4), the most pathogenic member of the genus Aviadenovirus, within the family Adenoviridae, primarily induces hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (HHS), leading to high morbidity and mortality in chickens. The capsid protein Hexon has been established as a core virulence factor of FAdV-4, but the underlying interaction mechanisms between Hexon and the host remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, we identified that the host protein RACK1 endogenously interacts with the Hexon, and that overexpression of RACK1 significantly inhibited FAdV-4 replication, where

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are nonenveloped, icosahedral viruses with double-stranded DNA, classified within the Adenoviridae viral family. They are implicated in a diverse range of human illnesses. The HAdV group consists of 103 distinct genotypes, categorized into seven primary serotypes labeled A through G. This classification is based on the hemagglutinin properties of their fiber protein and their genomic similarities. While many infections caused by these viruses are either symptomless or self-limiting, certain populations, such as kidney transplant recipients, face heightened risks. Par

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity is a multifactorial disease that is now endemic throughout most of the world. Although addressing proximate causes of obesity (excess energy intake and reduced energy expenditure) have been longstanding global health priorities, the problem has continued to worsen at the global level.
RECENT FINDINGS: Numerous microbial agents cause obesity in various experimental models-a phenomena known as infectobesity. Several of the same agents alter metabolic function in human cells and are associated with human obesity or metabolic dysfunction in humans. We address the eviden

A study about the incidence of Adenovirus on viral conjunctivitis was conducted. A sample design was made and samples of conjunctival exudate were taken from 150 patients with diagnosis of apparently viral conjunctivitis at the "Ramón Pando Ferrer" Ophthalmological Hospital from July to December, 1994. Samples were inoculated in cell culture and the indirect immunofluorescence technique was applied to those with a cytopathogenic effect that suggested infection due to Adenovirus. Monoclonal antibodies were used against Adenovirus allowing to identify them as part of the Adenoviridae family. The

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely used disinfectants, favored for their broad antimicrobial action and safety profile. However, viral disinfection is complex and affected by multiple variables, including the virus's envelope status, exposure time, temperature, and organic matter presence. This has created considerable ambiguity in the literature. We searched PubMed and Scopus using terms including "quaternary ammonium compounds" and "virucidal," with a focus on only registered QACs (biocides), identifying 64 studies from 419 results. These studies examined viruses from 22 families

Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) belongs to the Aviadenovirus genus within the Adenoviridae family. FAdVs are widely distributed and associated with various diseases in poultry, including adenoviral gizzard erosion (AGE), hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (HHS), and inclusion body hepatitis (IBH). In this study, we developed a multiplex conventional PCR for simultaneously detecting FAdV-4, -8b, and -11 by targeting the hexon gene. The multiplex PCR was optimized for primer concentrations and thermocycling conditions. The optimal primer concentration combination was set at 0.125 μM for FAdV-4, -8b, and

Mongolia is unique for its cold climate, its large populations of free-roaming livestock, its dense populations of people living in often crowded cities with high air pollution, and its subsequent elevated respiratory virus morbidity among its people and animals. In this narrative review, we examine what is known about this respiratory virus morbidity in Mongolia, organized through the lens of six respiratory virus families: Orthomyxoviridae, Coronaviridae, Pneumoviridae, Adenoviridae, Paramyxoviridae and Picornaviridae. We do so by summarizing published reports regarding respiratory virus mor

Bats comprise one of the most diverse and abundant groups of mammals in the world and host a significant viral diversity with zoonotic potential. Bat adenoviruses (bat AdVs), members of the family Adenoviridae, have been detected in several bat species, suggesting that bats are natural reservoirs. Here, faeces and rectal/anal-swabs were collected from 321 bats of an urban Atlantic Forest remnant from Rio de Janeiro, during 2019-2022, and screened for bat AdV nucleic acid with PCR. The positivity of bat AdVs was 3.7 % (12/321). Twelve individuals of four bat species were infected: Artibeus litu

To overcome the limitations of conventional vaccines, new platforms for vaccine design have emerged such as those based on viral vectors and virus-like particles (VLPs). Viral vector vaccines are highly efficient and the onset of protection is quick. Many recombinant vaccine candidates for humans are based on viruses belonging to different families such as Adenoviridae, Retroviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Rhabdoviridae, and Parvoviridae. Also, the first viral vector vaccine licensed for human vaccination was the Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine. Since then, several viral vectors have been approv

Obesity is now a prevalent disease worldwide and has a multi-factorial etiology. Several viruses or virus-like agents including members of adenoviridae, herpesviridae, slow virus (prion), and hepatitides, have been associated with obesity; meanwhile obese patients are shown to be more susceptible to viral infections such as during influenza and dengue epidemics. We examined the co-factorial role of viral infections, particularly of the persistent cases, in synergy with high-fat diet in induction of obesity. Antiviral interferons (IFNs), as key immune regulators against viral infections and in
