Intermuscular and intramuscular adipose tissues: Bad vs. good adipose tissues.

Human studies of the influence of aging and other factors on intermuscular fat (INTMF) were reviewed. Intermuscular fat increased with weight loss, weight gain, or with no weight change with age in humans. An increase in INTMF represents a similar threat to type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance as does visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Studies of INTMF in animals covered topics such as quantitative deposition and genetic relationships with other fat depots. The relationship between leanness and higher proportions of INTMF fat in pigs was not observed in human studies and was not corroborated by

Inter-muscular adipose tissue is associated with adipose tissue inflammation and poorer functional performance in central adiposity.

BACKGROUND: The presence of concomitant sarcopenia and obesity in sarcopenic obesity (SO) confers worse functional, morbidity and mortality outcomes compared to either alone. Excess adiposity and central redistribution of fats are associated with systemic inflammation and ectopic tissue fat infiltration in forms of Intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT). Our study examines the profile of IMAT across a spectrum of body compositions and associations with physical performance and inflammatory biomarkers including Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1), a novel biomarker of adipose tissue inflamm

Adipose tissue, adipokines, and inflammation.

White adipose tissue is no longer considered an inert tissue mainly devoted to energy storage but is emerging as an active participant in regulating physiologic and pathologic processes, including immunity and inflammation. Macrophages are components of adipose tissue and actively participate in its activities. Furthermore, cross-talk between lymphocytes and adipocytes can lead to immune regulation. Adipose tissue produces and releases a variety of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory factors, including the adipokines leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and visfatin, as well as cytokines and chemo

Adipose tissue in myocardial infarction.

INTRODUCTION: The histologic evolution of myocardial infarction (MI) has been studied in some detail. However, there is little mention of the presence of adipose tissue in healed MI(HMI). Ninety-one hearts explanted during 1997-2001 were examined to determine the extent of adipose tissue within HMI. METHODS: The medical records, surgical pathology reports, and all histologic sections of the explanted heart, from patients undergoing heart transplantation for ischemic heart disease, were reviewed. Adipose tissue within the areas of HMI was quantified. The location of the HMI, the age and gender

White adipose tissue: getting nervous.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a cancer type that causes a high rate of cancer death in the world. The standard therapy plan of intermediate and advanced stages of the HCC is transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The treatment effectiveness is, however, limited because of the heterogeneity of tumors and the resistance to drugs. This paper shows that the HCC patients with TACE resistance alter their tumor immune homeostasis by reducing the secretion of exosomal miR-32-5p, which has a negative relationship with the population of CD68+ macrophages. Both in-cellular and animal studies show th

Adipose tissue distribution and function.

Adipose tissue distribution in man is dependent on genetic and environmental factors. The total and regional masses of adipose tissue are dependent on the number of adipocytes as well as their degree of filling with depot fat. Currently available evidence does not suggest a specific regional regulation of fat cell multiplication in subcutaneous depots, which instead seems to occur at a certain critical degree of filling of available adipocytes. The control of the rate of filling of adipocytes then seems to be the main factor determining the local, regional mass of adipose tissue. This in turn

Adipose Tissue Remodeling in Pathophysiology.

Rather than serving as a mere onlooker, adipose tissue is a complex endocrine organ and active participant in disease initiation and progression. Disruptions of biological processes operating within adipose can disturb healthy systemic physiology, the sequelae of which include metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. A burgeoning interest in the field of adipose research has allowed for the elucidation of regulatory networks underlying both adipose tissue function and dysfunction. Despite this progress, few diseases are treated by targeting maladaptation in the adipose, an oft-

Deciphering White Adipose Tissue Heterogeneity.

Adipose tissue not only stores energy, but also controls metabolism through secretion of hormones, cytokines, proteins, and microRNAs that affect the function of cells and tissues throughout the body. Adipose tissue is organized into discrete depots throughout the body, and these depots are differentially associated with insulin resistance and increased risk of metabolic disease. In addition to energy-dissipating brown and beige adipocytes, recent lineage tracing studies have demonstrated that individual adipose depots are composed of white adipocytes that are derived from distinct precursor p

Adipose tissue and reproductive health.

The understanding of adipose tissue role has evolved from that of a depot energy storage organ to a dynamic endocrine organ. While genetics, sexual phenotype and sex steroids can impact the mass and distribution of adipose tissue, there is a counter-influence of white adipocytes on reproduction. This primarily occurs via the secretion of adipokines, the most studied of which- leptin and adiponectin- are highlighted in this article. Leptin, the "satiety hormone" primarily acts on the hypothalamus via pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons to

Adipose tissue: between the extremes.

Adipose tissue represents a critical component in healthy energy homeostasis. It fulfills important roles in whole-body lipid handling, serves as the body's major energy storage compartment and insulation barrier, and secretes numerous endocrine mediators such as adipokines or lipokines. As a consequence, dysfunction of these processes in adipose tissue compartments is tightly linked to severe metabolic disorders, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, lipodystrophy, and cachexia. While numerous studies have addressed causes and consequences of obesity-related adipose tissue hypertrophy and hy

Adipose tissue dysfunction in obesity.

The incidence of obesity has increased dramatically during recent decades. Obesity will cause a decline in life expectancy for the first time in recent history due to numerous co-morbid disorders. Adipocyte and adipose tissue dysfunction belong to the primary defects in obesity and may link obesity to several health problems including increased risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, dementia, airway disease and some cancers. However, not all obese individuals develop obesity related metabolic or cardiovascular disorders po

Osteocalcin and epicardial adipose tissue in obesity: new hints for epicardial adipose tissue-bone crosstalk.

Objectives: Osteocalcin (OC) appears to be involved in the regulation of glucose and fat metabolism. We aimed to determine the association between OC and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) in premenopausal obese women. Design: The study included 73 premenopausal obese women and 55 non-obese women. Echocardiographic examination was performed to measure EAT. Serum OC levels were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Results: OC levels were significantly lower in obese women than controls (18.26 ± 5.27 vs. 22.53 ± 6.84 ng/ml, p < .001). EAT thickness was higher in obese women than controls (5.1

Plasmalogen Inhibits Body Weight Gain by Activating Brown Adipose Tissue and Improving White Adipose Tissue Metabolism.

Plasmalogen, a phospholipid, exhibits preventive and therapeutic effects on dementia. Phospholipids improve fat metabolism, but it is unknown whether plasmalogen has an effect on fat metabolism. In this study, the effects of plasmalogen were determined by administering plasmalogen to KK-Ay mice. As a result, weight gain was significantly suppressed in the plasmalogen-treated group compared with the control group from 7 wk after the start of administration. In addition, plasmalogen administration increased uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression in brown adipose tissue. The effect is thought to

Inhibition of ATGL in adipose tissue ameliorates isoproterenol-induced cardiac remodeling by reducing adipose tissue inflammation.

Following cardiac injury, increased adrenergic drive plays an important role in compensating for reduced cardiac function. However, chronic excess adrenergic stimulation can be detrimental to cardiac pathophysiology and can also affect other organs including adipose tissue, leading to increased lipolysis. Interestingly, inhibition of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), a rate-limiting enzyme in lipolysis, in adipocytes ameliorates cardiac dysfunction in a heart failure model. Thus, we investigated whether inhibition of adipocyte ATGL can mitigate the adverse cardiac effects of chronic adrenerg

Adipose cells and tissues soften with lipid accumulation while in diabetes adipose tissue stiffens.

Adipose tissue expansion involves both differentiation of new precursors and size increase of mature adipocytes. While the two processes are well balanced in healthy tissues, obesity and diabetes type II are associated with abnormally enlarged adipocytes and excess lipid accumulation. Previous studies suggested a link between cell stiffness, volume and stem cell differentiation, although in the context of preadipocytes, there have been contradictory results regarding stiffness changes with differentiation. Thus, we set out to quantitatively monitor adipocyte shape and size changes with differe

Do Rats Have Epicardial Adipose Tissue?

The most frequently used laboratory animals for studies on adipose tissue properties and obesity are rodents. However, there are significant differences in the types of visceral fat depots between rodents and humans, including fat depots in the heart area. The large human fat depot of greatest interest in cardiac research is the epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). Its properties are widely investigated, because the EAT lies directly on the heart's surface and can easily affect myocardial physiology. The major fat depot in rodents' chest-pericardial fat-is located on the ventral surface of the par

Health of adipose tissue: oestrogen matters.

Menopausal women are more likely than premenopausal women to gain weight in the form of excess adipose tissue, which becomes preferentially deposited in the viscera. This body composition shift, largely driven by declining oestrogen levels, increases cardiometabolic disease risk. Oestrogens are key hormones involved in many metabolic processes, including in adipose tissue. Given the strong influence that adipose tissue health has on systemic metabolism, additional insights into mechanisms by which oestrogens affect adipose tissue phenotype and function are critical. Not only is adipose tissue
