Buccal Administration of a Zika Virus Vaccine Utilizing 3D-Printed Oral Dissolving Films in a Mouse Model.

Over the years, research regarding the Zika virus has been steadily increasing. Early immunization for ZIKV is a priority for preventing complications such as microencephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Unlike traditional vaccination approaches, oral dissolving films (ODFs) or mucoadhesive film technology is an emerging, exciting concept that can be used in the field of pharmaceuticals for vaccine design and formulation development. This attractive and novel method can help patients who suffer from dysphagia as a complication of a disease or syndrome. In this study, we investigated a mic

Case Report: Buccal administration of hydrogen-producing blend after a mild traumatic brain injury in a professional athlete.

Background: Sport-related mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious trauma that could impair brain function of an injured athlete. Treatment solutions for mild TBI typically concentrate on complete rest, while non-traditional therapeutic options remain largely ineffective. Molecular hydrogen (H 2 ) is an innovative neuroprotective agent that can easily reach the brain, yet no data are available concerning its value as a first-aid intervention after a mild TBI. Case report: This case report demonstrates the efficacy and safety of a hydrogen-producing dissolving tablet administered buccally

A practical program for responding to epileptic seizures including buccal midazolam administration in schools: Effectiveness evaluation for Yogo teachers in Japan.

Early response to epileptic seizures is critical. In children, epileptic seizures can occur at school, and practical programs are required to enable teachers to respond. In Japan, schoolteachers may administer buccal midazolam orally under certain conditions; however, there are no established training programs for responding to epileptic seizures in schools. In this study, we aimed to develop a training program on how to respond to seizures, including buccal midazolam administration, and evaluate its effectiveness. We conducted a training program for Yogo teachers at special needs schools and

In-Situ Gelling Liquid Crystal Mucoadhesive Vehicle for Curcumin Buccal Administration and Its Potential Application in the Treatment of Oral Candidiasis.

The treatments of oral candidiasis involve azole-based antifungals; however, the fungal resistance of these drug compounds has been detected in worldwide. Therefore, the discovery of new molecules from natural sources, such as curcumin, has been reported for the treatment of fungal diseases. However, this drug has poor solubility in aqueous solvents and presents low bioavailability. Thus, the system was designed for a low viscosity precursor of a liquid crystal phase, and saliva leads a phase behaviour increasing the viscosity of system and the residence time in the mucosa and promotes antifun

Assessing the impact of e-learning in caregiver training on paediatric epilepsy awareness and buccal Midazolam administration: A Scottish quality improvement study.

Caregiver training is vital for drug administration in medical emergencies. Most training, in the UK, for paediatric epilepsy is delivered by specialist nurses, covering awareness and buccal Midazolam administration, the preferred management for paediatric status epilepticus. Training is predominately delivered face-to-face due to limited evidence supporting online methods. This project outlines e-learning use in caregiver training on paediatric rescue medication administration and its effectiveness on awareness in paediatric epilepsy and management. Two networks of Scottish epilepsy specialis

Piperine-pro-nanolipospheres as a novel oral delivery system of cannabinoids: Pharmacokinetic evaluation in healthy volunteers in comparison to buccal spray administration.

Nowadays, therapeutic indications for cannabinoids, specifically Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are widening. However, the oral consumption of the molecules is very limited due to their highly lipophilic nature that leads to poor solubility at the aqueous environment. Additionally, THC and CBD are prone to extensive first pass mechanisms. These absorption obstacles render the molecules with low and variable oral bioavailability. To overcome these limitations we designed and developed the advanced pro-nanolipospheres (PNL) formulation. The PNL delivery system is comprised o

Effect of Apneic Oxygenation on Tracheal Oxygen Levels, Tracheal Pressure, and Carbon Dioxide Accumulation: A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Buccal Oxygen Administration.

BACKGROUND: Apneic oxygenation via the oral route using a buccal device extends the safe apnea time in most but not all obese patients. Apneic oxygenation techniques are most effective when tracheal oxygen concentrations are maintained >90%. It remains unclear whether buccal oxygen administration consistently achieves this goal and whether significant risks of hypercarbia or barotrauma exist. METHODS: We conducted a randomized trial of buccal or sham oxygenation in healthy, nonobese patients (n = 20), using prolonged laryngoscopy to maintain apnea with a patent airway until arterial oxygen sa

Administration of amyloid-β oligomer to the buccal ganglia may reduce food intake and cholinergic synaptic responses within the feeding neural circuit in Aplysia kurodai.

Anorexia is a behavioral change caused by functional brain disorders in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amyloid-β (1-42) oligomers (o-Aβ) are possible causative agents of AD that impair signaling via synaptic dysfunction. In this study, we used Aplysia kurodai to study functional disorders of the brain through o-Aβ. Administration of o-Aβ to the buccal ganglia (feeding brain for oral movements) by surgical treatment significantly reduced food intake for at least five days. Furthermore, we explored the effects of o-Aβ on the synaptic function in the feeding neural circuit, focusing on a

The Movahed protocol and algorithm for preventing intubation in patients with acute or sympathetic crashing acute pulmonary edema (SCAPE) without cardiogenic shock by repeated administration of buccal nitroglycerin ointments.

Patients presenting with severe acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema with hypoxia commonly require intubation until heart failure treatments take effect. A new term describing similar condition is called sympathetic crashing acute pulmonary edema (SCAPE). It is also called Flash pulmonary edema. Immediate pre- and afterload reduction can abort intubation. Using rapid repeated buccal administrations of nitroglycerin ointments can prevent intubation by rapidly reducing pre- and afterload as long as systolic blood pressure remains adequate without cardiogenic shock.
