Adrenergic innervation of blood vessels. A fluorescence microscopic study of the eighth nerve and inner ear structures in man.

Fluorescence microscopy was used to examine the perivascular adrenergic innervation in the eighth nerve and vestibular end-organ specimens from 13 patients with otoneurological diseases. It was observed that all the blood vessels accompanying the cochlear and vestibular nerves from patients with acoustic neuroma or Meniere's disease were devoid of specifically fluorescent fibers, while several adrenergic fibers were seen around the arterioles accompanying the inferior vestibular nerve from the patient with sudden deafness.

Developmental programming in response to intrauterine growth restriction impairs myoblast function and skeletal muscle metabolism.

Fetal adaptations to placental insufficiency alter postnatal metabolic homeostasis in skeletal muscle by reducing glucose oxidation rates, impairing insulin action, and lowering the proportion of oxidative fibers. In animal models of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), skeletal muscle fibers have less myonuclei at birth. This means that myoblasts, the sole source for myonuclei accumulation in fibers, are compromised. Fetal hypoglycemia and hypoxemia are complications that result from placental insufficiency. Hypoxemia elevates circulating catecholamines, and chronic hypercatecholaminemia h

An in vitro study of ectopic discharge generation and adrenergic sensitivity in the intact, nerve-injured rat dorsal root ganglion.

A chronic, loose constriction of the sciatic nerve in rat produces behavioral signs of spontaneous pain and cutaneous hyperalgesia (Bennett and Xie, Pain, 33 (1988) 87-107) as well as an abnormal spontaneous activity and adrenergic sensitivity of certain dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells with axons in the injured nerve (Kajander et al., Neurosci. Lett., 138 (1992) 225-228; Xie et al., J. Neurophysiol., 73 (1995)1811-1820). The present study investigated whether the spontaneous activity and adrenergic sensitivity were intrinsic properties of injured DRG cells and manifested in vitro, i.e., not d

Response of the urethral smooth muscles to pharmacological agents. I. Cholinergic and adrenergic agonists and antagonists.

We studied the effects of cholinergic and adrenergic agents on the 2 muscle layers of the proximal urethra of the cat. Strips were challenged with bethanechol chloride, phenylephrine and isoproterenol. Bethanechol chloride caused contraction of the longitudinally oriented strips; the circularly oriented strips revealed either minimal or no response to the same doses. The difference between the response of the 2 layers was highly significant (p less than 0.001). Phenylephrine stimulated both layers with a nonsignificant difference. Isoproterenol caused relaxation of both layers with a significa

Effect of stellatectomy on acid secretion and gastric release.

The stellate ganglia give rise to adrenergic fibers in the subdiaphragmatic vagus nerve which innervate the gut. Since stellatectomy causes a degeneration of these vagal adrenergic fibers, the purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of stellatectomy on gastric acid secretion (GAS). GAS was measured in 6 dogs with gastric fistula before and after stellatectomy was performed; also the gastrin response to a meat meal was studied before and after stellatectomy . Acid secretion increased significantly at submaximal doses of pentagastrin after stellatectomy , while basal and meal stimu

[The sources of the adrenergic innervation of the rat uterus].

Complete disappearance of adrenergic fibers in the rat uterus is only possible after complete removal of ovaries along with ovarian plexus, transection of the uterus-vaginal connexion and removal of a portion of sympathetic nervous trunk. "Long" adrenergic neurons situated in spinal sympathetic ganglia, seem not to be the only source of sympathetic innervation of the myometrium's vessels. A part of nervous fibers of vascular plexuses and all muscle nerves are represented by "short" neurons starting from the ganglionic structures of the uterus-vaginal connexion.

Hearing impairment in Parkinson's disease models: Possible relation with changes in cochlear efferent fibers.

Hearing impairments, as a prevalent and debilitating non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), remain unclear in mechanisms. In this work, we established PD mouse and rat models by using 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) and 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), respectively, and investigated their hearing functions and potential mechanisms through auditory brainstem response (ABR), distortion product otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE), noise exposure, immunofluorescence labeling, volumetric measurement, and colocalization analysis. In MPTP-induced PD mice, we observed significant chol

Morphology and Topography of the Celiac Plexus in Degu (Octodon Degus).

Here, we investigate the morphology and topography of the celiac plexus components in degu (Octodon degus). The study was performed using six adult individuals of both sexes. Macromorphological observations were performed using a derivative of the thiocholine method specially adapted for this study type (Gienc, 1977). The classical H&E technique was used for analysis of the cytoarchitectonic of the ganglion, and the AChE (Karnovsky and Roots, 1964) and SPG (De la Torre, 1980) techniques to observe cholinergic and adrenergic activity. The celiac plexus of degu is located on the ventral and late

Autonomic innervation of salivary glands in the armadillo, anteater, and sloth (Edentata).

The intraglandular distribution of adrenergic and cholinergic nerve fibers was studied histochemically in the parotid, mandibular, and sublingual glands of six species of edentates belonging to the three families that comprise the order; namely the Dasypodidae (armadillos), the Myrmecophagidae (anteaters), and the Bradipodidae (sloths). The following histochemical techniques were used: (a) acetylcholinesterase reaction for the demonstration of cholinergic fibers; (b) formaldehyde- and glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence for the demonstration of adrenergic fibers. In addition, norepinephrine (N

Adrenergic innervation of the vasa nervorum in the cranial nerves and spinal roots in the subarachnoid space.

Fluorescence microscopy revealed that the innervation of the vasa nervorum of both cranial and spinal nerve roots in the subarachnoid space in the monkey is adrenergic in nature. The endoneurium of the cranial nerve roots contained free adrenergic nerve fibers which were not related to the vessel wall.

Neuronal markers in Hirschsprung's disease with special reference to neuropeptides.

Hirschsprung's disease (Megacolon congenitum) is characterized by a sustained contraction of a segment of the large intestine and a consequent enlargement of the preceding gut segment. Morphologically, Hirschsprung's disease is characterized by an absence of neuronal cell bodies in the intramural ganglia of the contracted segment. An additional characteristic finding is the presence of enlarged nerve trunks in the submucosa and in the layer separating the circular and longitudinal muscle layers. These nerve trunks contain abundant acetylcholine esterase (AChE)-positive nerve fibers. The nerve

The Specifics of Adrenergic Innervation of Lymph Nodes from Different Body Regions in Young, Mature, and Old Animals.

Adrenergic innervation in the tissue of the cervical, mesenteric, and popliteal lymph nodes in rats of different age groups (from 2-45 days to 24 months) was studied using the specific fluorescence-microscopic imaging of catecholamines. Adrenergic innervation in the lymph nodes of rats is present from the first days of life, but it develops and complicates during postnatal ontogeny and is fully formed by thedays 20-30 of life. By the age of one month, adrenergic innervation represents a well-formed apparatus in all parts of the node, i.e. in the capsule, trabeculae, and cortical and medullary

A morphologic study of the behavior of biogenic amines in experimental acetic acid gastric ulcer.

Morphological observations were made of the behavior of biogenic amines in the gastric wall of rats with acetic acid-induced ulcer. In the normal rat stomach, abundant adrenergic fibers were seen in the adventitia of arteries and arterioles, with frequently distributed mast cells in their environs, in all gastric wall layers. Mast cells had a more frequent distribution in the antral region than in the corpus ventriculi while enterochromaffin-like cells (EC-like cells) were found with greater frequencies in the latter region of gastric wall. Adrenergic fibers were abundant around blood vessels

Origin and nature of pelvic ureter innervation.

AIMS: Innervation of the pelvic ureter traditionally comes from the pelvic plexus. This innervation is independent: adrenergic and cholinergic. The purpose of this study was to describe more precisely the origin and nature of its innervation (adrenergic, cholinergic, nitrergic, and somatic). METHODS: Six specimens of normal human fetal pelvis (four male and two female) from 20 to 30 weeks gestation were studied. The sections of these fetuses, carried out every 5 µm without interval, were treated with Hematoxylin Eosin (HE), with Masson's trichrome (TriM), immunolabeling of smooth muscle cells

Skin Nerve Phosphorylated α-Synuclein Deposits in Parkinson Disease With Orthostatic Hypotension.

This study aimed to investigate phosphorylated α-synuclein (p-syn) in autonomic skin nerves of Parkinson disease (PD) patients with and without orthostatic hypotension (OH). We studied 28 PD patients with normal corrected Mini-Mental State Examination including 14 patients with neurogenic OH (PD + OH) and 14 matched patients did not complain of OH (PD - OH); 7 of whom were re-evaluated over a follow-up period (4 ± 2 years). Skin biopsy was performed in proximal and distal sites. PD + OH patients showed a higher p-syn deposition than PD - OH, with widespread autonomic cholinergic and adrenergic

Structural and functional impairment of adrenergic input to intraocular cerebellar grafts during thyroid hormone deficiency.

Embryonic cerebellae were transplanted to the anterior eye chamber of normal and thyroidectomized adult rats and were left in the eye to mature for 5 weeks. The cerebellar grafts received adrenergic innervation from the sympathetic ground plexus of the host iris. The density of adrenergic fibers innervating the grafts was reduced by approximately 50% in all thyroidectomized groups, without any effect on the fluorescence intensity or the morphology of individual nerve fibers. The reduction in adrenergic ingrowth was entirely prevented in grafts raised in similarly thyroidectomized recipients, w

Appearance of the noradrenergic markers tyrosine hydroxylase and neuropeptide Y in cholinergic nerves of the iris following sympathectomy.

Selective autonomic denervations of the iris have been used to study the possible redistribution of adrenergic markers within adult nerve fiber systems and to reveal the cellular origin of a nonsympathetic fiber plexus induced to express such markers. The presence and distribution of fibers showing neuropeptide Y (NPY)- and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-like immunoreactivity was studied in the rat iris using stretch-prepared whole mounts. Normal irides contained a dense regular network of NPY-positive varicose fibers. Such fibers were regularly seen innervating blood vessels. The choroid membrane

Is Ross Syndrome a New Type of Synucleinopathy? A Brief Research Report.

Ross syndrome (RS) is a rare peripheral autonomic system disorder characterized by tonic pupil, hyporeflexia, and segmental anhidrosis. Neuropathological studies show that RS results from the selective cholinergic nerve degeneration. However, the cause and underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, we show α-synuclein accumulation in the autonomic nerve terminals in the lesser curvature of stomach of patients with RS. In addition, immunohistochemical findings demonstrate that a dominant degeneration of cholinergic fibers is exhibited in patients with RS, while main degeneration of adrene
