The interaction between several adrenergic agonists (epinephrine, norepinephrine and isoproterenol) and relatively specific beta 1- and beta 2-antagonists has been examined on fluid permeability of the isolated rabbit ciliary epithelium. A 48-year-old man with severe variant angina refractory to conventional treatment with calcium antagonists and nitrates, or prazosin, or trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride, became symptom free rapidly when treated with denopamine, a adrenergic beta-1 agonist. In vitro incubation studies with bovine parathyroid gland slices compared the relative responsiveness of parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion to isoprotherenol, epinephrine or norepinephrine. We have previously shown that exposure of rats to constant light (LL) induced a decrease in NO synthase (NOS) activity in the pineal gland. We present here the evidence that chronic (5 days) norepinephrine (NE) or isoproterenol treatment prevents the effect of LL and enhances pineal NOS activity in LL animals. To establish an in vitro system as a model for dopamine action, we studied the effect of dopamine (DA) receptor agonists and antagonists on adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) formation in opossum kidney (OK) cells.
