Detection of NDM-1-Positive Aeromonas caviae from Bacteremia by Using Whole-Genome Sequencing.

PURPOSE: Nosocomial infections caused by New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-producing bacteria are prevalent worldwide. However, such diseases caused by NDM-producing Aeromonas caviae had never been reported. Our study aimed to elucidate the genomic characteristics of NDM-1-producing A. caviae isolated from hospital patients. METHODS: Bacterial genomic features and possible origins were assessed by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and phylogenetic analysis. Subsequent investigations include antimicrobial susceptibility testing and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). RESULTS: We identified here

Characterization of the role of putative Aeromonas caviae-specific virulence factor, flgB, in virulence and host-pathogen interactions.

Aeromonas caviae, Gram-negative bacteria ubiquitous in the environment, are an emerging human pathogen associated with various infectious diseases, particularly gastroenteritis. Despite recent studies demonstrating A. caviae is the most predominant Aeromonas species underlying human infection, A. caviae remains understudied, and no A. caviae-specific virulence factors associated with human disease have been identified. To identify A. caviae-specific putative virulence factors, we conducted comparative genomic analyses among clinical Aeromonas isolates (n = 431), which identified a variant of f

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of (R)-specific enoyl-CoA hydratase from Aeromonas caviae involved in polyhydroxyalkanoate biosynthesis.

Dimeric (R)-specific enoyl-coenzyme A (CoA) hydratase from Aeromonas caviae catalyzes the hydration of trans-2-enoyl-CoAs with carbon lengths of 4-6 to yield their corresponding (R)-3-hydroxyacyl-CoAs and is essential for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthesis. The enzyme has been crystallized by vapour diffusion against a reservoir solution containing 20% polyethylene glycol 4000, 5% 2-propanol and 20 mM HEPES pH 7.0 at 298 K. Crystals belong to the monoclinic space group C2, with unit-cell parameters a = 111.54 (3), b = 59.29 (1), c = 47.27 (4) A, beta = 113.04 (2) degrees and contain a dim

Fulminant Aeromonas caviae bacteremia with migratory myalgia: a case report of a CTX-M-3-producing multidrug-resistant strain.

BACKGROUND: Aeromonas caviae is an emerging waterborne pathogen of increasing clinical concern, particularly regarding antimicrobial resistance. While extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes such as blaCTX-M are well-documented in Enterobacterales, they remain uncommon in A. caviae. We report a rare case of fulminant A. caviae bacteremia with atypical clinical manifestations and a complex genomic resistome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old man without formal immunodeficiency but with predisposing vulnerabilities (advanced age, prior subtotal gastrectomy) presented with fulminant bacteremia

Acute Hepatitis and Invasive Bacteremia Caused by Aeromonas caviae in an Immunocompetent Adult: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Aeromonas spp. are emerging pathogens with recognized capacity to cause invasive infections, especially in immunocompromised hosts or in the context of environmental exposure to contaminated water. However, their clinical relevance in urban-dwelling, immunocompetent patients remains underappreciated, partly due to diagnostic challenges and lack of routine microbiological screening. We report the case of an 83-year-old immunocompetent woman, living in an urban setting, who presented with fever and altered mental status. Laboratory investigations revealed acute hepatitis with markedly elevated l

Super-refractory status epilepticus in a woman with Aeromonas caviae meningitis: a rare case report and review of the literature.

Currently, there is a lack of knowledge regarding Aeromonas caviae meningitis. We report the first case of super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) in a woman with Aeromonas caviae meningitis. The case report demonstrates that this condition can lead to severe SRSE. Effective treatment for epilepsy is crucial for improving the prognosis for similar patients. According to Gomes et al.'s consensus protocol for SRSE, using a combination of up to one anesthetic drug and three non-anesthetic anti-epileptic drugs may be helpful and important in managing SRSE that is caused by Aeromonas caviae meni

Aeromonas caviae mimicking Vibrio cholerae infectious enteropathy in a cholera-endemic region with possible public health consequences: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Aeromonas species have been documented to yield false positive results in microbiological tests for Vibrio cholerae. They share many biochemical properties with Vibrio species, with which they were jointly classified in the family Vibrionaceae until genotypic information provided new insights. Aeromonas species are increasingly associated with gastrointestinal infections, albeit with great apparent variation in pathogenicity and virulence both between and within species of the genus. We report two cases with clinically mild cholera-like symptoms, at a time when a cholera outbreak w

Xanthine oxidase activity affects pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory profiles in spleen of silver catfish experimentally infected with Aeromonas caviae.

Several pieces of evidence have linked the involvement of xanthine oxidase (XO), a source of uric acid and reactive oxygen species (ROS), to pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory effects observed during bacterial fish diseases. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether upregulation of splenic XO activity contributes to disease pathogenesis of Aeromonas caviae infection, as well as whether it may be considered a pathway involved in ROS and nitric oxide (NO) production. XO activity increased in the spleen of infected animals, as did the splenic levels of uric acid, ROS and metabolites of

Assessment of the Immunological Effects of DNA Vaccines Carrying Antigen Genes for OVA, OMP and OVA-OMP Against Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas caviae Infections in Sinocyclocheilus grahami and Oreochromis niloticus.

Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas caviae are two economically significant pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture and are the main causes of bacterial septicemia in fish. Controlling disease caused by these two bacterial pathogens is becoming a greater challenge due to increases in the antibiotic resistance of bacteria. Here, we developed and applied novel DNA vaccines carrying antigen genes for ovalbumin (OVA) and the outer membrane protein (OMP) of A. hydrophila to evaluate their immunoprotective effects against these two Aeromonas species and promote the green development of the aquaculture ind

Two novel β-galactosidases from Aeromonas caviae with potential industrial applications in milk and catalytic mechanism analysis using molecular docking.

Lactose intolerance has been a significant global health concern, as it is caused by the absence of lactase, leading to the inability of the human body to absorb lactose. This study investigated two genes encoding maltose O-acetyltransferase with β-galactosidase activity from Aeromonas caviae to evaluate their potential application value for lactose degradation in bovine and human milk. The two novel β-galactosidases (AcGal25: 22.0 kDa and AcGal31: 21.3 kDa) were heterologously expressed and biochemically characterized. The optimal pH of both enzymes was 8.0, and the optimal temperature of AcG

Revealing the pathogenicity of a highly virulent Aeromonas caviae isolate and its effects on immune responses in Mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi).

Despite the known threat of Aeromonas caviae to aquaculture, its effects on mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) were unknown. This study decisively addresses this critical knowledge gap by successfully isolating and identifying a highly pathogenic strain of A. caviae from diseased mandarin fish during a natural outbreak. We systematically profiled its virulence, establishing a lethal dose 50 % (LD50) of 1.25 × 106 CFU/mL, which confirms its high pathogenicity. Further histopathological examinations revealed extensive tissue damage, including severe necrotic lesions in vital organs such as the li
