A novel aptasensor for the detection of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) was developed based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect between gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and FAM-labeled cDNA (FAM-cDNA). Additionally, magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) were attached with AuNPs to construct a Fe3O4@AuNPs system that was easy to separate by the external magnetic field. In this aptasensor, FAM-labeled cDNA and Fe3O4@AuNPs acted as donor and acceptor, respectively. In the presence of target AFM1, the aptamer of this aptasensor specifically recognized with AFM1, resulting in a turn-on fluoresce

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) contamination poses a serious threat to human health globally. Hence, it is necessary to develop reliable and ultrasensitive methods for the determination of AFM1 residue in food products at low levels. In this study, a novel polystyrene microsphere-mediated optical sensing (PSM-OS) strategy was constructed to solve the problems of low sensitivity and susceptibility to interference from the matrix in AFM1 determination. Polystyrene (PS) microspheres have the advantages of low cost, high stability, and controllable particle size. They can be useful optical signal probes for

Milk is one of the most complete foods, and its contamination is a serious risk to public health. Various studies on animals indicate the carcinogenicity of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1). This mycotoxin enters the milk through consumption of contaminated animal feed. The purpose of this research was to determine AFM1 in milk samples and evaluate its safety due to contamination with this mycotoxin. The samples were selected from livestock farms and transported to the laboratory under hygienic conditions. The amount of AFM1 was measured by HPLC/FLD. The extraction and clean-up stage of the samples was don

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is a pathogenic metabolite transferred from feed into milk from aflatoxin (AF) B1, B2, G1, and G2; thus, it poses a human health risk. Therefore, effective mitigation strategies are needed to reduce animal and human exposure to AF. Study objectives were to evaluate a dietary adsorbent (Silicoglycidol, ATX) as a sequestering agent in AF-contaminated feed and to broadly examine how AF affects liver function and the immune system. Primiparous Holstein cows (n = 12; 279 ± 88 DIM and 675 ± 19 kg BW) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 21-d periods in which d

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is known to be a potent carcinogen and continues to pose a public health concern through the consumption of contaminated dairy foods. It is anticipated that consumption of lactic acid bacteria capable of binding aflatoxins can reduce the risk of AFM1 on human health to a certain extent. Seldom reports have hinted the possibility of using lactic acid bacteria for the biological detoxification of AFM1. Hence, the present study was conducted to assess the ability of selected probiotic Lactobacillus strains for their AFM1 binding ability in PBS and to reduce its bioaccessibilit

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) contamination in milk and dairy products poses a significant food safety concern, highlighting the need for sensitive and reliable analytical methods. Herein, we developed a fluorescence recovery aptasensor that integrates hierarchical magnetic nano-orbs (HMO) as magnetic capture probes with aptamer-functionalized green-fluorescent silica nanoparticles (Apt-GFSN) as fluorescent signaling probes for AFM1 detection. Three magnetic capture platforms, including magnetic beads (MBs), single-core magnetic nanoparticles (SMN), and HMO, were comparatively evaluated to elucidate the

The presence of mycotoxins in cheese is a significant concern due to their potential health risks. Mycotoxins can contaminate cheese through two main routes: indirectly via contaminated animal feed, and/or directly, because of mold growth on dairy products. It has been reported that cheese may contain metabolites of aflatoxin B1 such as aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), aflatoxicol (AFL), and, its precursor, sterigmatocystin (STC). This study presents a reliable method for the simultaneous determination of AFM1, AFL, and STC in cheeses made from ovine, goat, or buffalo milk. The method was developed using

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) after its bioconversion from aflatoxin B1 in animal liver becomes the part of milk while heavy metals get entry into milk and milk products during handling in the supply chain. Aflatoxin M1 and heavy metals being toxic compounds are needed to be monitored continuously to avoid any ailments among consumers of foods contaminated with such toxicants. Thirteen commercially available infant formula milk (IFM) brands available in Pakistani markets were analyzed for the quantitative determination of AFM1 and heavy metals through ELISA and atomic absorption spectrophotometer, respe

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a carcinogenic mycotoxin in food and feed, is bio-transformed in the mammalian liver to aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), a potentially toxic metabolite excreted in cow milk. Hence, humans are exposed to AFM1 through dairy consumption. Despite its toxicity, numerous studies continue to report AFM1 occurrence levels (milk-borne concentrations) above the safety limits, indicating persistent exposure risks. A consolidated data set of global AFM1 occurrence levels spanning from 1990 to 2025, coupled with a data driven assessment of trends in AFM1 occurrence and exposure is not available in

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) and ochratoxin A (OTA) are pernicious mycotoxins widely co-existing in the environment. However, nephrotoxicity and underlying mechanism induced by AFM1 coupled with OTA still remain to be explored. In this study, CD-1 mice were treated with 3.5 mg/kg b.w. AFM1, OTA, and AFM1 + OTA for 35 days, and UPLC-MS-based metabolomics method was effectuated to investigate metabolomic profiles of mice kidney. Subsequent experiments on human renal proximal tubular (HK-2) cells were performed to dig out the causal connections between distinguished differential metabolites and nephrotoxi

This study aimed to develop a rapid and sensitive method for detection of aflatoxin M1 (AFM) by dynamic light scattering (DLS) coupled with superparamagnetic beads and gold nanoprobes. The nanoprobes were synthesized by the conjugate of AFM and bovine serum albumin (AFM-BSA), BSA, and gold nanoparticles. Magnetic beads-based immunosorbent assay (MBISA) was used to measure the concentration of AFM by direct competition between AFM and nanoprobes. DLS was used to determine the concentration of unattached nanoprobes that was positively proportional to the concentration of AFM in the sample. TEM i
