In recent years, the devastating effect of rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in Africa has been acknowledged by Institutions such as the Pan-African Society of Cardiology, the African Union Commission, and the World Health Organization. Key priorities set to eradicate RF and RHD include diagnosing and managing RF and RHD, building registries, improving adequate supplies of benzathine penicillin, reproductive health services, and cardiac surgery, developing multi-sectoral RHD awareness programmes, understanding RHD pathogenesis and fostering international partnership for re

The protozoan diseases leishmaniasis, human African trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease are responsible for substantial global morbidity, mortality and economic adversity in tropical and subtropical regions. In most countries, existing strategies for control and treatment are either failing or under serious threat. Environmental changes, drug resistance and immunosuppression contribute to the emergence and spread of these diseases. In the absence of safe and efficient vaccines, chemotherapy, together with vector control, remains the most important measures to control trypanosomatid diseases. He

While African countries have improved access to immunization since the start of the millennium, progress has stagnated in the last few years. One in five African children is not vaccinated with life-saving vaccines, and recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) including yellow fever, measles, and meningitis, among others point to gaps in immunization coverage as well as disease surveillance. In 2017, African Heads of State endorsed the Addis Declaration on Immunization (ADI) at the 28th African Union Summit and committed to ensuring universal access to immunization across the co

INTRODUCTION: Mass malaria vaccination, rather than vaccinating only children below age 5, has been proven to have the potential to reduce morbidity and mortality among those vaccinated, both young and old. Addressing vaccine scepticism and misinformation is crucial in African nations to build public trust in malaria prevention. Therefore, including a wider range of demographics in vaccine trials is necessary for equitable representation and achieving herd immunity against malaria.
AIM: This present article aims to identify some of the obstacles that impede malaria vaccination usage and accep

The adoption of the World Health Organization Pandemic Agreement in May 2025 marked a political commitment to stronger global pandemic preparedness. Its credibility, however, depends on the successful negotiation and implementation of the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing annex under Article 12, to be finalized by April 2026. The COVID 19 pandemic exposed the failures of voluntary global health mechanisms, as African countries rapidly shared pathogen samples and sequence data yet faced severe delays in access to vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics. The PABS annex therefore represents the

The African seahorse Hippocampus algiricus has been considered restricted to the eastern Atlantic coast of Africa, with occasional records in Macaronesian archipelagos. The species is currently classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Here, we report the first confirmed occurrence of this species in the Mediterranean Sea, based on photographic and video evidence. The specimen was identified using diagnostic morphological characters and morphometric analysis. This record represents a north-eastern range extension and aligns with ongoing tropicalizat

PURPOSE: We sought to evaluate the management of Gustilo type IIIB open tibia diaphyseal fractures in an African trauma center with respect to soft tissue defect management and bone union achievement. Functional outcome assessment was the secondary objective.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted including patients treated for open tibia fractures requiring flap coverage between 2007 and 2011. As plastic surgeons were lacking in availability, all procedures were performed by orthopedic surgeons trained in completing nonmicrosurgical flap transfers.
RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients with

Despite global malaria programmes already operating within resource constraints, 2025 saw a significant decrease in funding following the US government's termination of most of its global health programmes, as well as the decline in development aid spending by the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, and other countries. The disruption of funding was sudden, with most African countries lacking adequate contingency plans. This, despite most of the malaria burden being in Africa (94% of 263 million cases in 2023), accounting for a reduction in gross domestic product of up to 1.3% annually,

BACKGROUND: Half of the estimated annual 28 million non-communicable diseases (NCDs) deaths in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are attributed to weak health systems. Current health policy responses to NCDs are fragmented and vertical particularly in the African region. The World Health Organization (WHO) led NCDs Global action plan 2013-2020 has been recommended for reducing the NCD burden but it is unclear whether Africa is on track in its implementation. This paper synthesizes Africa's progress towards WHO policy recommendations for reducing the NCD burden.

BACKGROUND: African countries have not had the high case and death rates from COVID-19 as was predicted early in the pandemic. It is not well understood what factors modulated the rate of COVID-19 cases and death on the continent.
METHODS: We collated data from the World Bank data site, Our World in Data and Freedom House for African for 54 African countries who are members of the African Union. We used them as explanatory variables in two general linear model regression analyses. COVID cases and deaths per 100,000 obtained from WHO COVID-19 dashboard on August 12, 2021, as outcome variables

The objectives of the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), both at its inception in the early 1980s, and at its reactivation in 2000 following a decade of inactivity, included bringing the products of decades of advances in cancer research to African populations through international collaboration. The historical perspective provided in this report illustrates progress in achieving these objectives through successive continent-wide activities over a period of 30 years, culminating in the organisation's most recent conference held in Durban, South Africa, 21-24 Nov

Expert opinion was elicited to undertake a qualitative risk assessment to estimate the current and future risks to the European Union (EU) from five vector-borne viruses listed by the World Organization for Animal Health. It was predicted that climate change will increase the risk of incursions of African horse sickness virus (AHSV), Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) into the EU from other parts of the world, with African swine fever virus (ASFV) and West Nile virus (WNV) being less affected. Currently the predicted risks of incursion were lowest

BACKGROUND: This brief report examines the association between marital and relationship status and 12-month and lifetime prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) among African Americans. Previous work has found that adults with major depressive disorder are less likely to be married or in a cohabiting relationship. This report extends previous research by investigating whether unmarried, non-cohabiting African Americans with depression are also less likely to be involved in a romantic relationship.
METHODS: Data are from the African American sub-sample (n=3570) of the National Survey of

Carpal coalition, the union of 2 or more carpal bones, can be congenital or acquired. Congenital, nonsyndromic carpal coalition usually presents in otherwise healthy individuals. The most common coalition is between the lunate and the triquetrum, followed by the capitate and the hamate. Pancarpal coalition, or coalition of all or most of the bones of the carpus, is an extremely rare finding and usually occurs as part of a syndrome. We present a nonsyndromic case of this rare entity, in a 28-year-old woman of West African descent, with symptoms of left hand and wrist pain. Our literature review

Background: Africa is facing the triple burden of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and nutritional disorders. Multilateral institutions, bilateral arrangements, and philanthropies have historically privileged economic development over health concerns. That focus has resulted in weak health systems and inadequate preparedness when there are outbreaks of diseases. This review aims to understand the politics of disease control in Africa and global health diplomacy's (GHD's) critical role. Methods: A literature review was done in Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Emba

This study examines African papionin phylogenetic history through a comprehensive cladistic analysis of extant and fossil craniodental morphology using both quantitative and qualitative characters. To account for the well-documented influence of allometry on the papionin skull, the general allometric coding method was applied to characters determined to be significantly affected by allometry. Results of the analyses suggest that Parapapio, Pliopapio, and Papio izodi are stem African papionin taxa. Crown Plio-Pleistocene African papionin taxa include Gorgopithecus, Lophocebus cf. albigena, Proc

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is part of captive breeding programs designed to support free-living populations and genetic diversity. This study's aim was to identify common causes of morbidity and mortality objectively in United Kingdom captive African wild dogs to inform management recommendations that will improve health and welfare and reduce disease prevalence. Data were gathered from 140 individual dogs housed in 10 institutions, with morbidity records for 122 individuals and 70 postmortem reports. D

BACKGROUND: Pathologic or spontaneous fractures are recognised causes of morbidity in children. There is a paucity of data on their aetiology and patterns in African children.
METHODS: A combined retrospective and prospective study of 47 children aged 15 and below with pathologic fractures of long bones seen from January 2000 to December 2006. The setting was the Orthopaedic and Traumatology department of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
RESULTS: A total of 47 patients with a mean age of 5.3 years +/- SD with pathologic fractures of 50 long bones w

BACKGROUND: The governance of artificial intelligence within human resource management across the 54 sovereign states of Africa presents distinctive challenges that differ markedly from those observed in Euro-American contexts. African organizations have adopted AI-driven workforce tools at annual growth rates exceeding 25% since 2018; however, governance frameworks remain in their nascent stages and are characterized by fragmentation. Current comparative scholarship has largely overlooked innovative governance developments within the African continent, often positioning Africa as a recipient

BACKGROUND: Majority of the countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region are not on track to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals, yet even more ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 on heath, have been adopted. This paper highlights the challenges - amplified by the recent Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa - that require WHO and other partners' dialogue in support of the countries, and debate on how WHO can leverage the existing space and place to foster health development dialogues in the Region.
