Safety and efficacy of long-term disulfiram aftercare.

OBJECTIVES: Disulfiram is effective in relapse prevention in alcoholism. However, the optimal therapeutic aftercare regimen for patients is still unclear, and disulfiram is associated with numerous adverse events. Also, it is not clear if supervised long-term disulfiram treatment is safe and sufficiently efficient in the long run. METHODS: We evaluated the clinical outcome data of 10 alcohol-dependent patients who underwent supervised treatment with disulfiram for more than 50 weeks. RESULTS: Seven of 10 patients remained completely abstinent during the supervised disulfiram therapy for a me

Nutritional supplementation for hip fracture aftercare in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the hip are an important cause of later ill health and mortality in elderly people. People with hip fractures are often malnourished at the time of fracture, and have poor food intake in hospital. OBJECTIVES: This review assesses the effects of nutritional interventions in elderly people recovering from hip fracture. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Injuries Group specialised register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library issue 2, 2003), MEDLINE (1966 to July 2003), Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews (1984 to

Aftercare following syndesmotic screw placement: a systematic review.

For ankle fractures, in general, several studies have been published on immobilization (e.g., cast or boot) versus early motion after surgical treatment. However, no studies have been performed to determine the best aftercare strategy for surgically treated patients with ankle fractures with concomitant acute distal tibiofibular syndesmotic injuries. The aim of the present review was to compare the functional outcomes of ankle fractures with syndesmotic injury treated with a cast or boot versus early motion. We performed a systematic review using the electronic databases from January 1, 2000 t

[Aftercare following distal forearm fractures and carpal trauma].

Rehabilitation following operative or conservative treatment of fractures of the distal forearm and carpal trauma takes effect through adequate immobilization and ought to be maximized by a differentiated application of every means of physiotherapy, ergotherapy, and physical medicine available. Rehabilitation of the fractured distal forearm and carpal trauma are presented based on the therapeutic guidelines as applied by the Department of Hand Surgery, Plastic and Microsurgery of the Berufsgenossenschaftliches Unfallkrankenhaus Hamburg.

[Incorrect aftercare of a surgically treated metatarsal fracture].

A 60-year-old patient suffered an ankle distortion resulting in a comminuted fracture of the fifth metatarsal. On the same day the accident occurred the patient presented to an emergency department and immediate operative treatment of the fracture was performed by intramedullary Kirschner wires with closed reduction and internal fixation. The aftercare was carried out on an outpatient basis by a registered orthopedist in accordance with the surgeon's instructions. In the radiological control 14 days after surgery a dislocation of the fracture was detected and 1 week later a rectification opera

Discharge and aftercare in chronic lung disease of the newborn.

This article deals with the discharge planning and continuing care of babies with chronic lung disease of the newborn (CLD), especially those with a continuing oxygen requirement, with some reference to longer term outcome. The pattern of CLD has changed since early descriptions, and the most useful definition for persisting morbidity in a baby with lung disease is a continuing oxygen requirement beyond 36 weeks post-menstrual age. Long-term oxygen therapy to maintain oxygen saturation at a mean of 95% or more and prevent levels below 90% is the cornerstone of management, and with adequate oxy

Stillbirth aftercare in a tertiary obstetric center - parents' experiences.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess parents' satisfaction with received care and support when experiencing stillbirth. METHODS: This was a questionnaire survey conducted at Helsinki University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland during 2016-2020. Separate questionnaires were sent to mothers and partners who had experienced an antepartum singleton stillbirth at or after 22 gestational weeks during 2016-2019. The questionnaire covered five major topics: stillbirth diagnosis, delivery, information on postmortem examinations, aftercare at the ward, and follow-up appointment. RESULTS: One hundred nine

A new economic instrument for financing accelerated landfill aftercare.

The key aspects of landfill operation that remain unresolved are the extended timescale and uncertain funding of the post-closure period. This paper reviews the topic and proposes an economic instrument to resolve the unsustainable nature of the current situation. Unsustainability arises from the sluggish degradation of organic material and also the slow flushing of potential pollutants that is exacerbated by low-permeability capping. A landfill tax or aftercare provision rebate is proposed as an economic instrument to encourage operators to actively advance the stabilization of landfilled was

Prison-based substance abuse treatment, residential aftercare and recidivism.

AIMS: This study examined the impact of residential aftercare on recidivism following prison-based treatment for drug-involved offenders. DESIGN: A matched group quasi-experimental design. Survival regression analyses were used to predict time until rearrest. A logistic regression model was constructed for predicting aftercare completion. SETTING: A 9-month in-prison therapeutic community (ITC) and several community-based transitional therapeutic communities (TTCs). PARTICIPANTS: Data were collected from 396 male inmates (293 treated, 103 untreated). MEASUREMENTS: Background information (g

Predicting compliance of dual diagnosis inpatients with aftercare treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with comorbid diagnoses of a substance use disorder and at least one other axis I mental disorder have low rates of compliance with aftercare. The purpose of the study was to identify predictors of noncompliance among dual diagnosis inpatients. METHODS: Characteristics of 48 dual diagnosis inpatients were examined. Compliance was defined as visiting the aftercare site at least three times. RESULTS: Persons with a diagnosis of cocaine dependence were significantly more likely to be noncompliant with aftercare than those with a diagnosis of cocaine abuse. Patients with a di
