Thirty-eight elderly patients with primary depressive illness (Feighner criteria) were followed up for 7-31 months. In the absence of persistent organic signs and severe physical illness, age of onset (first depressive episode after 60) but not age was significantly related to course of illness. Compared to early onset depressives, late onset depressives were more likely to remain completely well during the follow-up period and less likely to have frequent or disabling relapses.

The phenotype of juvenile Huntington's disease (HD) differs clearly from that of adult-onset HD, but information about differences between mid-age-onset HD and late-onset HD (LOHD) is scarce. A national cohort of 206 patients with adult-onset HD was identified using national registries and patient records. LOHD was defined as age ≥60 years at HD diagnosis. Genetic disease burden was assessed using CAG age product (CAP) score. LOHD comprised 25% of the adult-onset HD cohort giving a point prevalence of 2.38/100,000 in the Finnish population at least 60 years of age. The proportion of LOHD out o

The aetiology of MG is unknown, but both genetic and environmental factors are important. Over the years association of MG with Human Leucocyte Antigens (HLA) has been described in different populations. We investigated a possible association between HLA-DRB1 alleles and age of onset in MG. One hundred and fourteen MG patients (82 females) and 282 control individuals (CP) were studied. Patients were classified according to the age of onset (early-onset <50, n = 74 and late-onset ≥ 50, n = 20). Patients with thymoma (n = 20) were analyzed separately. HLA-DRB1 and HLA-B*08 genotyping was perform

The identification of mutations modifying the age of onset (AOO) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for understanding the natural history of AD and, therefore, for early interventions. Patients with sporadic AD (sAD) from a genetic isolate in the extremes of the AOO distribution were whole-exome genotyped. Single- and multi-locus linear mixed-effects models were used to identify functional variants modifying AOO. A posteriori enrichment and bioinformatic analyses were applied to evaluate the non-random clustering of the associate variants to physiopathological pathways involved in AD. We i

The genetic anticipation phenomenon has been described in several neurological disorders, often associated with unstable trinucleotide repeats in the affected genes. The occurrence of this phenomenon in hereditary essential tremor is still debated. We describe a family in which three male members with essential tremor showed a progressive anticipation in onset age and an increased severity of clinical symptomatology.

Numerous attempts have been made to subdivide populations of alcoholics into homogeneous subgroups. Although no consensus has been reached about the characteristics of these subgroups, a number of classification schemes have identified a subgroup of patients with a high genetic loading for alcoholism, an early onset of alcoholism, a severe course, and coexisting psychiatric problems consisting of aggressive tendencies or criminality. In a recent typology proposed by Cloninger on the basis of adoption studies, this subgroup has been classified as type 2. Another group of patients who were found

We examined the distribution of ages of onset of autism and related communication handicaps and assessed factors related to age of onset. Subjects were approximately 1,800 children seen at Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren) since 1970. Exact numbers of subjects varied with different analyses due to missing data. Data were gathered through direct assessment, interview, and questionnaire. Seventy-six percent of autistic children were identified by parents by 24 months of age, and 94% by 36 months. Families reporting early onset te

The effect of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon 4 allele on age of onset was analyzed in two groups of families with early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), (1) Volga German (VG) kindreds, in which AD is caused by an unknown locus and (2) early-onset non-VG families showing evidence of linkage to chromosome 14. The epsilon 4 allele did not have a detectable effect on age of onset in either group. This finding suggests some forms of early-onset familial AD are not modifiable by APOE status, or that AD can be caused by APOE-independent pathways.

Age of onset is the most robust clinical feature demarcating aetiologic subtypes of familial Alzheimer's disease. It has previously been noted that early onset disease (arbitrarily below the age of 65 years) conforms to an autosomal dominant pattern of transmission. Late onset disease is generally thought to have a more complex aetiology. We present data here suggesting that early onset disease can be subdivided by genetic aetiology with which age of onset correlates. In general, those pedigrees showing linkage to the chromosome 14 locus have a mean age of onset in the forties whereas those pe

Major depression (MD) is a complex, heterogeneous neuropsychiatric disorder. An early age at onset of major depression (AAO-MD) has been associated with more severe illness, psychosis, and suicidality. However, not much is known about what contributes to individual variation in this important clinical characteristic. This study sought to investigate the genetic components underlying AAO-MD. To investigate the genetics of AAO-MD, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of AAO-MD based on self-reported age of symptoms onset and self-reported age at first diagnosis from the UK Bioban

The term Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) was coined in 2002 and defined as a disease entity in the ISA, ISSAM, EAU, EAA and ASA endorsed Recommendations for Investigation, Treatment and Monitoring of LOH (2005 and 2008) as 'a clinical and biochemical syndrome associated with advancing age, characterized by symptoms and a deficiency in serum testosterone (T)'. LOH was classified as a combined primary and secondary hypogonadism since the endocrine capacity of the testes and the pituitary are impaired. Symptoms of LOH include loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, increased body

BACKGROUND: Lower age at onset of schizophrenia has been traditionally associated with poorer response to treatment and less favourable prognosis. The aim of the study was to find out whether age at onset of schizophrenia is related to the dosage of typical neuroleptics in outpatients.
METHOD: Age at onset was defined as age at first seeking of psychiatric help. Demographic, social and disease-related characteristics were studied in a group of 200 stable outpatients with schizophrenia (100 males and 100 females). Psychopathological symptoms were assessed with the Krawiecka Scale. Neuroleptic

OBJECTIVE: Anticipation (i.e., the decrease in age at onset or the increase in severity of a disorder in successive generations) has recently been reappraised as a key to understanding the genetics of some familial illnesses. The purpose of this study was to search for possible anticipation in panic disorder.
METHOD: Thirty-eight unilineal, multigenerational families with multiple directly interviewed members who had panic disorder were compared across two successive generations for 1) age at the first panic attack, 2) age at the onset of panic disorder, and 3) the highest degree of agoraphob

The age at onset of psoriasis has been analysed for 11,366 psoriasis patients. The age at onset for siblings of probands has been analysed for 805 probands having one affected sibling and for 179 probands having two affected siblings. The age at onset curve for all probands shows a dominating maximum at about puberty but also indications for two more maxima at about 30 and 50 years of age, respectively. A more relevant picture of the risk of getting psoriasis at different ages is obtained if the onset for old people having psoriasis is investigated. The three maxima come out more clearly in th

BACKGROUND: To establish the age at menopause in the Canary woman. To study the possible influence of habitat, socioeconomical status and other possible factors on it.
METHODS: From an initial population of 742 women, we previously excluded those that were not menopausal at the moment of the study and those that suffered it as a result of a oophorectomy. We included 394 women that had a natural menopause in the study group.
RESULTS: The mean age of menopause was 48.6 years old. There were no statistical differences between the natural or urban areas. Neither the age of menarche nor the numbe

BACKGROUND: In Huntington disease, the accurate determination of age-at-onset is critical to identify modifiers and therapies that aim to delay it.
METHODS: Retrospective data from the European Huntington's Disease Network's REGISTRY and PREDICT-HD, a longitudinal study in prodromal huntingtin gene expansion mutation carriers. Data (age, gender, CAG repeat length, parent affected, and Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale motor score, total functional capacity) from at least three visits in 423 REGISTRY and 124 PREDICT-HD participants were included. BACKGROUND: Information about differences between younger and elderly patients with bipolar disorder and between elderly patients with early and late age of onset of illness is limited.
METHOD: The European Mania in Bipolar Longitudinal Evaluation of Medication (EMBLEM) study was a 2-year prospective, observational study in 3459 bipolar patients on the treatment and outcome of patients with an acute manic or mixed episode. Within this study, elderly patients (>60 years of age; n=475) were compared with younger patients (<50 years of age; n=2286), and within the elderly group, Late Onset Bipol

BACKGROUND: Age of onset is an important epidemiological indicator in characterizing disorders׳ subtypes according to demographic, clinical and psychosocial determinants. While investigated in various psychiatric conditions, age of onset and related characteristics in agoraphobia have yet to be examined. In light of the new diagnostic status in the DSM-5 edition of agoraphobia as independent from panic disorder, research on agoraphobia as a stand-alone disorder is needed.
METHODS: Admixture analysis was used to determine the best-fitting model for the observed ages at onset of 507 agoraphobia
