Intersectional discrimination and mental health in later life: ageism as a core dimension.

OBJECTIVES: Despite extensive literature that examines the relationship between discrimination and health, less is known about specific discrimination attributions and how they may differentially associate with health. To address this gap, the current study investigated the latent typology of discrimination attributions and the intersectional attributions' relationships with mental health in later life. METHODS: Data came from 6,282 respondents in the 2016 Psychosocial Leave-Behind Questionnaire of the Health and Retirement Study. Participants ascribed their everyday discrimination experience

Using Twitter to Understand COVID-19 Vaccine-Related Ageism During the Pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: During the rollout of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, older adults in high-income countries were often prioritized for inoculation in efforts to reduce COVID-19-related mortality. However, this prioritization may have contributed to intergenerational tensions and ageism, particularly with the limited supply of COVID-19 vaccines. This study examines Twitter discourse to understand vaccine-related ageism during the COVID-19 pandemic to inform future vaccination policies and practices to reduce ageism. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We collected 1,369 relevant twee

Ableism, ageism, and other biases in healthcare: The impact on young adult patients.

OBJECTIVES: Young adult patients, particularly those with chronic and rare conditions, face unique challenges related to bias and discrimination when navigating the healthcare system. Making up a minority of individuals with chronic conditions, young adult patients can face micro- and macro aggressions from healthcare professionals related to their age or abilities. The consequences of these biases have a profound impact on the physical and mental health of young adults with chronic conditions. The purpose of this brief report is to present the findings of a multidisciplinary roundtable discus

Structural ageism in health professional education: A Brazilian case with global implications.

Ageism remains a pervasive yet underexamined form of discrimination within health professions education. This narrative review develops a typology of educational ageism comprising three interrelated dimensions: curricular ageism, reflected in the omission or tokenistic inclusion of geriatrics and gerontology; institutional-structural ageism, expressed through organizational priorities, resource allocation, and policy frameworks that devalue aging-related care; and perceptual ageism, reflected in student attitudes shaped by professional socialization and the hidden curriculum. Grounded in the B

Overlooked and undertreated: gendered ageism in primary care management of eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) in older adults remain underrecognised due to persistent stereotypes framing them as conditions of youth. This study investigates how general practitioners (GPs) in Austria perceive, diagnose, and manage EDs in patients aged 65 and over, and explores the potential role of ageism in the context of clinical decision-making. METHODS: A vignette-based, semi-structured interview design was used with nine Austrian GPs experienced in treating older patients. The vignette described an older woman presenting with symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa. Data were analysed using

Preliminary Validation of Experienced Ageism Measures With Four Populations in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Ageism appears widely across the globe and poses an important threat to older people's well-being and health. With respect to hearing health, experiences, perceptions, and fear of ageism can delay the diagnosis of hearing loss, reduce pursuit of hearing care, and fuel reluctance to wear a hearing device. Ageism intertwines with hearing loss stigma, which potentially deepens the negative effects of both; however, little evidence exists to quantify the effects of the intersection of ageism and hearing loss stigma. This lack of data on both hearing loss stigma and ageism, and their in

Ageism toward older adults among healthcare workers and students: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Ageism, particularly against older adults, is widespread in different settings, including public policies, healthcare institutions, workplaces and media. Its pervasive presence, especially in healthcare settings, has caused a significant impact on the economics and healthcare expenses and has become a growing concern. Older adults' health outcomes are impacted by both positive and negative ageism displayed by healthcare workers and students. Although multiple reviews have studied ageism in healthcare, literature mapping the presence of both positive and negative ageism among heal

Between Lipstick and Widow's White: Female desire and gendered ageism in contemporary Bollywood.

Aging women in Bollywood have long been confined within a narrow repertoire of archetypes, among them the suffering widow, the stern matriarch, and the self-effacing grandmother, figures defined not by individuality or desire but by moral authority, self-sacrifice, and patriarchal function. Shaped by what Susan Sontag termed the 'double standard of aging' and intensified by the social economy of Brahminical patriarchy, these representational conventions have historically rendered older women's sexuality, reproductive agency, and social presence cinematically inconceivable. When older women ass

Ageism and Quality of Life in Older Adults: The Roles of Self-Disgust and Psychological Distress.

This study examined psychological correlates of quality of life (QoL) among older adults in a Latin American context, focussing on the roles of ageism, self-disgust, and psychological distress. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine the incremental contribution of sociodemographic factors, three dimensions of ageism, self-disgust, and psychological distress to QoL among 272 Colombian older adults (mean age = 68.40, SD = 6.80). Findings indicated that interpersonal experiences of ageism, but not exposure to ageist messages or self-ageism, were associated with poorer QoL.

Intersections of Ageism and Homelessness Among Older Adults: Implications for Policy, Practice, and Research.

Ageism remains a key issue in gerontological literature and has long been recognized as a deeply harmful form of discrimination. Despite advances in ageism scholarship related to education, advocacy, and prevention, there are calls for ongoing intersectional examinations of ageism among minority groups and across older people facing multiple exclusions. In particular, very little ageism research has considered the experiences of age-based discrimination and prejudice among older people experiencing homelessness. We problematize this gap in knowledge and provide recommendations for policy, prac

"I prefer to stay silent": internalized ageism, mobility avoidance, and social participation in later life.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Population aging has heightened the importance of ensuring older adults' equal participation in social life and access to public services. Public transportation is central to mobility, independence, and social participation in later life, yet older adults may face age-based discrimination in everyday public settings. This study explored older adults' experiences of ageism in public transportation and examined how these experiences affect mobility and social participation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The study used a qualitative design in Türkiye. Semistructured int

Future Psychologists' Intentions to Work with Older Adults: Extending the Theory of Planned Behavior with Ageism.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate future psychologists' intentions to work with older adults by extending the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to include ageism, frequency of intergenerational contact, and knowledge of gerontology professionals. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to 615 psychology students. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) tested the associations between TPB constructs (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control), ageism, contact frequency, and knowledge of gerontology professionals on work intentions. RESULTS: Subjective norms and attitudes

Dementia behaviors that undergraduates find distressing and the relationship to personality traits, ageism, and dementia knowledge.

Our aim was twofold: 1) determine the characteristics of those who hold stigmatizing beliefs toward persons with dementia and 2) identify which dementia-related behaviors are most likely to be stigmatized. Questionnaires were administered to 298 undergraduate students. Participants read a vignette of a woman displaying six dementia-related behaviors and asked to what degree each behavior was distressing. Participants provided information on their age, sex-at-birth, gender, socioeconomic and marital statuses. Correlations were examined between personality traits, time spent with a person with d

Is ageism among prescribers an influential factor in the management of depression in the elderly? A vignette-based study.

BACKGROUND: The decision-making process, from diagnosing depression to treatment proposal, involves many interrelated factors. Patient age has been identified as a factor that influences care proposals. Our aim is to investigate the association between how prescribers perceive ageing and their decision-making when treating depression. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 57 physicians was conducted. The questionnaire collected socio-demographic data, and ageing semantic differential (ASD) scale to assess ageism. It also examined the reactions to treatment proposals in a clinical vignette abou

Psychometric properties of the Persian version of the ambivalent ageism scale (benevolent and hostile) in the adult population in Iran.

BACKGROUND: With the growing population of older adults and the prevalence of negative attitudes towards them, the issue of ageism and its health and economic impacts in both benevolent and hostile contexts warrants special attention. It is crucial to examine the attitudes of other age groups towards older adults across different societies. Particularly, the benevolent dimension of ageism, which has been less explored in research, requires more focus. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a psychometric evaluation of The Ambivalent Ageism Scale among the adult population in Iran. METHODS: Thi

Psychometric validation of the Arabic self-directed ageism scale among Lebanese middle-aged and older adults.

BACKGROUND: Self-directed ageism is the internalization of negative societal stereotypes about one's own aging. This concept has been linked to poorer mental health, diminished self-esteem, and reduced quality of life among the older population. Despite its relevance, there is currently no validated Arabic tool to measure this construct in Arab populations. This study aimed to validate the first Arabic version of the self-directed ageism scale in a Lebanese sample of middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: The original scale was translated into Arabic using the forward-backward translation met
