Aortic stiffness increases markedly with age and is associated with excess risk for various adverse clinical outcomes, including heart disease, dementia, and kidney disease. Although evidence for adverse effects of aortic stiffening is overwhelming, integration of direct and indirect measures of aortic stiffness into routine clinical assessment has lagged behind the science. This brief review will examine recent evidence supporting the value of stiffness as an important new risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease and will offer suggestions for incorporating stiffness measures i

To support deinstitutionalization policies in Spain, it's useful to understand sarcopenia determinants. This study analyzed 267 community-dwelling and institutionalized older adults, measured sarcopenia using the European Working Group of Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) algorithm and looked for the role of place of aging among a set of social, economic, psychological and environmental variables. Findings reveal that the place of aging might have a significant relationship with sarcopenia in Spanish older adults and that a large proportion of older adults with sarcopenia could end up liv

BACKGROUND: Companion animal death is a common source of grief, although the extent and context of that grief is poorly understood, especially in older adulthood. The aim of this multiple-methods study was to develop a greater understanding of the impact of companion animal death on older women living alone in the community, as older women are a distinct at-risk group, and the supports that should be available to help these individuals with their grief.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from across Alberta, a Canadian province, through seniors' organizations, pet rescue groups, and social

Older adults are more frequently wanting to age in place. Governments are seeking cost-effective and efficient methods of supporting aging populations. Older adults who want to stay in their homes for as long as possible encounter multiple barriers, including struggling to maintain their homes, inadequate levels of social and healthcare support, and the lack of financial capacity to pay for home support services. The Mobile Seniors' Wellness Network (MSWN), a multi-disciplinary and person-centered mobile health and social support intervention study was designed to investigate and support aging

BACKGROUND: Assisted living (AL) is a growing and operationally diverse option in our nation's long-term care system. Many consumers view AL communities as a viable option to receive needed services and age in place. However, little is known about the factors that influence residents' ability to age in place when experiencing cognitive decline.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association of resident and site characteristics to length of stay, reason for leaving and destination for residents with dementia in assisted living. In particular, this study sought to assess the impact of an 'Enhanced' Pro

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to understand how neighbourhoods - as physical and social environments - influence community mobility. Seeking an insider's perspective, the study employed an ethnographic research design. Immersed within the daily lives of 6 older adults over an 8-month period, auditory, textual, and visual data was collected using the "go-along" interview method. During these interviews, the researcher accompanied participants on their natural outings while actively exploring their physical and social practices by asking questions, listening, and observing. Findings

BACKGROUND: Promoting options for aging in place (AIP) has broad appeal to policymakers and professionals providing services to persons living with dementia (PWD). However, the benefits or burdens of AIP likely vary among individuals and families. We sought to describe factors influencing decision-making to age in place versus seek a higher level of residential care for PWD.
METHODS: A qualitative study was undertaken as part of a larger mixed-methods study utilizing semi-structured interviews with PWD, family care partners, and dementia clinicians. Interview transcripts were analyzed using q

Alzheimer's disease leads to an alteration of decision-making abilities which may increase risk-taking behaviours, particularly associated anosognosia. Anticipating the progression of the disease raises a number of questions, particularly in relation to aging in place. Our qualitative study aimed to identify the arguments used by older patients with Alzheimer's disease when choosing a place to age. The study included 22 older adults, living at home, and diagnosed as mild dementia. The patients' arguments in favour of ageing in place were based mainly on the preservation of internal security, t

BACKGROUND: In ageing societies, understanding the lived experiences of dependent older adults is essential for designing care policies that support health, dignity, and well-being. While ageing in place is widely promoted, less is known about how dependent older adults themselves define its limits.
AIM: This study examines how dependent older adults describe the conditions under which ageing in place supports-or undermines- their dignity and quality of life.
METHODS: We conducted 30 in-depth interviews with individuals aged 65 and older in Barcelona, Spain, all officially recognized as havi

OBJECTIVES: This study identifies differences in unmet mobility needs among older adults living in rural versus urban areas.
METHODS: We used data from Round 9 of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), limiting our analyses to respondents who had not moved since baseline (average housing tenure of 27 years; n = 3343). We conducted bivariate and multivariate analyses to detect rural/urban differences in unmet mobility needs, adjusting for socio-demographics, health status, and housing characteristics.
RESULTS: Rural residence was associated with higher odds of any unmet mobility

The number of older people ageing in place is growing, and support for this population group is declining. To reduce the pressure on elderly care and to guarantee the quality of care for older people, new solutions for support are needed. Peer-advice for ageing in place could contribute to this. The aim of this study is to explore the perspectives of older people on peer-advice to support ageing in place. Two complementary research methods were used: a questionnaire of 263 older people and five focus groups with 35 older people in total. Descriptive and thematic analyses resulted in three main

This study explores the experience of aging among older Canadian women with physical limitations who live by themselves. While aging in place has been a policy priority in rapidly greying Canada, a lack of complementary public supports poses challenges for many older adults and their family members. Employing a qualitative methodology, and drawing from the notion of aging in the right place, we collected personal narratives of 12 women (aged 65 to 92) in two geographic areas in Ontario, including residents of regular houses, apartments, condominiums, assisted living and community housing for s

Hazards in the urban built environment can create barriers to mobility among older adults aging in place. We investigated the relationship between urban built environment characteristics and 15-month trajectories of mobility disability in a sample of 1,188 older adults living in Detroit, MI, a city that has undergone rapid economic and structural decline. Data come from the Michigan Minimum Data Set for Home Care (2001-2008), an enumerative database of older adults in Michigan who qualify for federal or state-funded home and community-based long-term care through a Medicaid waiver program. BACKGROUND: Older adults with chronic illnesses or dependency on care who strive to age in place need support and care depending on their illness. Digital technology has enabled the possibility of supporting older adults in their wishes to age in place. However, current studies have mainly focused on the solitary evaluation of individual technologies or on evaluating technologies for specific illnesses.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to synthesize research on the experiences of older people from the Western culture with chronic illnesses or care needs and their families with digital technology f

AIM: Preference for aging in place among middle-aged people is an important element in estimating the future needs for community services of disabled older adults. Drawing on Litwak and Longino's typologies of relocation, the present study investigated the characteristics of middle-aged adults who prefer to age in place and those who prefer to move, at two levels of disability: being unable to walk alone and being bedridden.
METHODS: In the present cross-sectional study, an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was sent to 2500 community-dwelling adults aged 40-64 years.
RESULTS: If una

BACKGROUND: Over the next 2 decades, the population of older adults (65 years of age and up) in Canada is anticipated to rise significantly, with the most rapidly increasing subset being racialized minorities. Many older adults prefer to age at home and in the community despite lacking services to support this goal. Considering older adults' growth rate and preferences, the research team sought to investigate what resources were needed to facilitate aging in place.
METHODS: This study took place in Peel Region (Ontario, Canada), a particularly diverse region in Canada. 15 focus groups and 7 1

Although the majority of people with dementia wish to age in place, they are particularly susceptible to nursing home admission. Nurses can play an important role in detecting practical problems people with dementia and their informal caregivers are facing and in advising them on various ways to manage these problems at home. Six focus group interviews (n = 43) with formal and informal caregivers and experts in the field of assistive technology were conducted to gain insight into the most important practical problems preventing people with dementia from living at home. Problems within three do
