The efficacy of air bags has been proven in diminishing the rate of fatalities and severity of injury in motor vehicle crashes. Unfortunately, as with any developing technology, new problems have been encountered that are directly attributable to the deployment of the air bag itself. Most air bag-related injuries are minor and, surprisingly, more than 7% are burns typically involving the upper extremity or head or neck. One monitoring station is insufficient to characterize the high spatial variation of traffic-related heavy metals within cities. We tested moss bags (Hylocomium splendens), deployed in a dense network, for the monitoring of metals in outdoor air and characterized metals' long-term spatial distribution and its determinants in Girona, Spain. RATIONALE: Although air bags have decreased the risk of serious injury from motor vehicle crashes, their deployment is not innocuous and can result in injury. PURPOSE: We describe an unusual case of corneal decompensation following air bag trauma in a 38 year-old-female.
METHODS: The patient was followed clinically for 5 months post-injury with persistent corneal edema that failed to resolve, necessitating corneal transplantation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the corneal button was performed.
RESULTS: SEM revealed localized areas of complete endothelial destruction. Other areas of the endothelium had cell counts under 1,000 cells per square millimeter.
CONCLUSIONS: This case corroborates animal studies demonstrating endothelial cell loss

Indoor air quality in libraries impairs user health and productivity. This study first employed Sphagnum palustre moss bags as low-cost sentinels to monitor indoor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) across three university libraries differing in age and location. Moss bags were deployed for 45 days during the non-heating (autumn) and heating (winter) periods in study rooms, electronic reading rooms, stack rooms, and outdoors. A middle-aged man, who drove a small vehicle while drunken and not wearing a seat belt, crashed head on into a pier wall at a high speed. The rapid air-bag deployment caused abdominal compression of the driver, who was found dead 2 m away from the car. There were facial front-glass injuries and multiple rib fractures, but no head injury. Autopsy disclosed liver laceration with intra-abdominal hemorrhage (2,000 mL), resulting in hemorrhagic shock. This is the first autopsy report of liver laceration caused by the rapid expansion of an air-bag during an automobile crash.
