The low bioavailability of Pb and low number of Pb-tolerant plant species represent an important limitation for Pb phytoextraction. It was recently suggested that halophyte plant species may be a promising material for this purpose, especially in polluted salt areas while Pb mobility may be improved by synthetic chelating agents. This study aims to evaluate Pb extraction by the halophyte Sesuvium portulacastrum in relation to the impact of EDTA application. Seedling were cultivated during 60 days on Pb artificially contaminated soil (200, 400, and 800 ppm Pb) in the presence or in the absence

Sesuvium portulacastrum L. is a flowering succulent halophyte in the ice plant family Aizoaceae. There are various ecotypes distributed in sandy coastlines and salty marshlands in tropical and subtropical regions with the common name of sea purslane. These plants are tolerant to salt, drought, and flooding stresses and have been used for the stabilization of sand dunes and the restoration of coastal areas. With the increased salinization of agricultural soils and the widespread pollution of toxic metals in the environment, as well as excessive nutrients in waterbodies, S. portulacastrum has be

Islands constitute excellent models to disentangle the effect of different biotic and abiotic factors generating plant size variation. However, plant size variation in terrestrial habitat islands remains unexplored. This is a meaningful gap as these insular systems are expected to have both similarities (e.g. isolation defined by habitat contrast and permeability against the surrounding matrix) as well as differences (e.g. large herbivores' presence). Here, we address this gap by examining size-related plant trait differences between specialist species of terrestrial habitat islands (quartz is

Due to limited treatment options for advanced-stage metastatic breast cancer, a high priority should be given to develop non-toxic chemopreventive drugs. The value of various natural and dietary agents to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer is well established. Trianthema portulacastrum Linn. (Aizoaceae), a dietary and medicinal plant, has been found to exert antihepatotoxic and antihepatocarcinogenic properties in rodents. This study was initiated to investigate mechanism-based chemopreventive potential of an ethanolic extract of T. portulacastrum (TPE) against 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)ant

The common ice plant, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, is a halophytic (salt-loving) member of the Aizoaceae, which switches from C3 photosynthesis to Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) when exposed to salinity or water-deficit stress. CAM is a metabolic adaptation of photosynthetic carbon fixation that improves water use efficiency by shifting net CO2 uptake to the night, thereby reducing transpirational water loss. To improve our understanding of the molecular genetic underpinnings and control mechanisms for Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and other salinity stress response adaptations, a t

The complex process of wound healing is a major problem associated with diabetes, venous or arterial disease, old age and infection. A wide range of pharmacological effects including anabolic, anti-diabetic and hepato-protective activities have been attributed to Ecdysterone. In earlier studies, Ecdysterone has been shown to modulate eNOS and iNOS expression in diabetic animals and activate osteogenic differentiation through the Extracellular-signal-Regulated Kinase (ERK) pathway in periodontal ligament stem cells. However, in the wound healing process, Ecdysterone has only been shown to enhan
