The effectiveness of fermented turmeric powder in subjects with elevated alanine transaminase levels: a randomised controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Previous animal studies have shown that Curcuma longa (turmeric) improves liver function. Turmeric may thus be a promising ingredient in functional foods aimed at improving liver function. The purpose of the study is to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of fermented turmeric powder (FTP) on liver function in subjects with elevated alanine transaminase (ALT) levels. METHODS: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted between November 2010 and April 2012 at the clinical trial center for functional foods of the Chonbuk National University Hospital. The t

[Histological changes in the livers of chronic hepatitis B patients with persistently normal serum alanine transaminase levels].

OBJECTIVE: To study the histological changes in livers of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with persistently normal serum ALT levels (PNAL). METHODS: 274 CHB patients who had percutaneous liver biopsies and had a detectable viral load (lower limit of detection is 10(3) copies/ml) in our department between October 2003 and February 2007 were included in this study. Among these patients, 139 had PNAL, group A, (with at least 3 normal serum ALT levels, with intervals of more than two months over a period of 12 or more months before the biopsy). The other 135 patients, group B, had abnormal ser

Characterization of T cell immunity in chronic hepatitis B virus-infected mothers with postpartum alanine transaminase flare.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum alanine transaminase (ALT) flares occur frequently in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected mothers with antepartum antiviral therapy (AVT). We aimed to characterize the T cell immunity in HBV-infected mothers experiencing postpartum ALT flares. METHODS: Twenty HBV-infected pregnant women who received AVT at 26-28 weeks of gestation were enrolled and followed up until 15-18 weeks postpartum. Among the 20 HBV-infected pregnant women, 6 experienced postpartum ALT flare (AF mothers), while 14 did not (NAF mothers). T lymphocyte phenotypes and functions were analyzed usi

Isolated persistent elevation of alanine transaminase for early diagnosis of pre-symptomatic Wilson's disease in Chinese children.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies presented a contradictory approach for the investigation of pediatric patients with an isolated increase in alanine transaminase. While classical teaching advised for a thorough investigation, recent studies suggested the yield on further investigation was low and thus not necessary. Yet the approach to the same clinical problem may need to be different due to variable disease prevalence rates among different ethnic populations. For the population with a higher prevalence rate of genetic liver diseases like Wilson's disease, an abnormal liver function may be the firs

Development of prediction model for alanine transaminase elevations during the first 6 months of conventional synthetic DMARD treatment.

Frequent laboratory monitoring is recommended for early identification of toxicity when initiating conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs). We aimed at developing a risk prediction model to individualize laboratory testing at csDMARD initiation. We identified inflammatory joint disease patients (N = 1196) initiating a csDMARD in Turku University Hospital 2013-2019. Baseline and follow-up safety monitoring results were drawn from electronic health records. For rheumatoid arthritis patients, diagnoses and csDMARD initiation/cessation dates were manually confirmed.

Clinical features of hepatitis C-infected patients with persistently normal alanine transaminase levels in the Southwestern United States.

Approximately one third of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection have normal alanine transaminase (ALT) levels. We studied the clinical, biochemical, virological, and histological features in patients with persistently normal ALT. A case-control study was conducted on 275 patients with chronic HCV infection, including 75 patients with persistently normal ALT and 200 patients with abnormal ALT. Persistently normal ALT was defined as 4 consecutive ALT values in each patient within a period of 12 months. The average age of the patients was 44 years (range 18 to 69 years). More n

Association of the I148M/PNPLA3 variant with elevated alanine transaminase levels in normal-weight and overweight/obese Mexican children.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and elevated alanine transaminase (ALT) levels are common in obese Hispanic adults and children. Recently, a PNPLA3 gene variant (I148M) was strongly associated with NAFLD and higher ALT levels in obese adults, including Hispanics. The aims of this study were to estimate the frequency of elevated ALT levels, and to address the influence of obesity and PNPLA3/I148M on ALT levels in a general population sample of Mexican school-aged children. METHODS: A total of 1037 non-related Mexican children aged 6 to 12 years were genotyped for

High-normal and abnormal alanine transaminase levels linked to increased risk of hepatoma following treatment for chronic hepatitis C.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increased in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and elevated alanine transaminase (ALT) levels. The association between HCC and ALT levels after interferon (IFN) or direct-acting antivirals (DAA) therapy is unclear. METHODS: Patients with CHC receiving antiviral therapy were included in two large-scale cohorts in Taiwan (T-COACH and TACR). Posttreatment ALT levels were assessed at 24-weeks/12-weeks after the end-of-treatment with IFN/DAA. HCC risk after antiviral therapy were identified for evaluation. RESULTS: Of 29,926

Dissecting causal relationships between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease proxied by chronically elevated alanine transaminase levels and 34 extrahepatic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is prevalent worldwide and is associated with the risk of many extrahepatic diseases. However, whether NAFLD is a risk marker or a common cause of extrahepatic diseases is unclear. METHODS: We searched PubMed to identify NAFLD-related extrahepatic diseases. Genetic instrumental variables (IVs) for NAFLD surrogated by chronically elevated alanine transaminase levels and eligible extrahepatic diseases were retrieved from the corresponding genome-wide association analysis. We proposed a procedure for Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and p

Effect of illness uncertainty on alanine transaminase levels and aspartate aminotransferase levels in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have illness uncertainty. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to investigate the effect of the degree of illness uncertainty in patients with NAFLD on liver function values. We conducted a questionnaire survey and collected blood samples from outpatients with NAFLD. The items in the questionnaire were measured for illness uncertainty using the Japanese version of the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale-Community (MUIS-C). Blood samples were collected at baseline and after 1 year. We divided the patients into two groups: one with hig

Elevated Alanine Transaminase-to-Platelet Index (APRI) Is Associated with Obesity and Distinct Forms of Dyslipidemia: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Obesity is a pathological condition and a major risk factor for dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Recent research highlighted the association of non-invasive serum markers with these conditions but the clinical utility of ALT APRI in obesity and its relationship with dyslipidemia remain unexplored. Methods: We examined the association of ALT APRI in 165 non-diabetic adults stratified by BMI and serum lipid parameters. Results: Obese subjects had significantly higher APRI than lean subjects, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.65 (p = 0.019).
