Israeli college student alcohol use: the association of background characteristics and regular drinking patterns.

In Israel, there is a lack of research regarding the association between background characteristics of university students and their use of alcohol. In response, a cohort of 1276 male and female undergraduate students was surveyed at a major university in the country. Among the study participants, 21% (270) reported regular, weekly use of alcohol. Men were much more inclined to drink on a weekly basis than women; and, 7% of the students who used alcohol regularly did so on a daily basis. Approximately 70% of the students who used alcohol drank in the company of friends; and, one-third of the a

Examining Alcohol-Related Blackouts and Drinking Motives Over Time Among College Women.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences among college women continues despite prevention efforts. One common consequence, alcohol-related blackouts (ARBs), are periods of alcohol-activated anterograde amnesia. The purpose of the current project is to extend the ARB and drinking motive literature by examining their relationship over time. METHOD: A sample of 424 women (88.9% White) completed online surveys assessing their ARBs and drinking motives weekly for 10 weeks. A series of hierarchical generalized linear models were estimated to examine the between-person and withi

College Status, Perceived Drinking Norms, and Alcohol Use among Sexual Minority Women.

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults are at elevated risk for drinking compared to heterosexual young adults, and this discrepancy is particularly striking for sexual minority women (SMW). Perceived social norms are strong predictors of young adult alcohol use, especially among college students. The college environment is often one where increases in alcohol use are seen, but the impact of college status on SMW's drinking has been understudied. The present study explored patterns of alcohol use and consequences among SMW and the extent to which social norms relate to use and consequences. P

Alcohol Expectancy, Drinking Behavior, and Sexual Victimization Among Female and Male College Students.

College students have high rates of heavy drinking, and this dangerous behavior is strongly linked to sexual victimization. Although research has examined risk factors for sexual assault, few studies have simultaneously studied the various pathways through which risks may affect sexual assault and how these pathways may be uniquely different among females and males. As such, the current study uses path analyses to examine whether alcohol expectancies mediate the relationship between social factors (e.g., hooking up, amount friends drink) and drinking behavior and experiencing sexual victimizat

Alcohol mixed with energy drinks are robustly associated with patterns of problematic alcohol consumption among young adult college students.

BACKGROUND: Young adults are a population at great risk for problematic health behaviors. Alcohol mixed with energy drink (AmED) consumption is a relatively popular health risk behavior among young adults. AmED consumption continues to illustrate negative outcomes in the research literature, having been linked with other substance use, high-risk sexual behavior, and sexual victimization. Limited research to date has examined associations between AmED consumption and patterns of alcohol dependence. METHODS: Undergraduate college students (n=757) filled out an online survey which assessed their

The effect of impulsivity and drinking motives on alcohol outcomes in college students: a 3-year longitudinal analysis.

Objective: Substance use is a public health concern and cross-sectional studies have found that impulsivity and drinking motives influence substance use in emerging adults. Despite these findings, longitudinal studies with nuanced measures of impulsivity and drinking motives are needed. Participants: The current study investigated the three-year relationship between impulsivity-related traits, drinking motives, sex, and drinking outcomes in a sample of 509 college students (47.47% male; 81% White). Methods: The effects of impulsivity traits and drinking motives on problematic drinking outcomes

The cost of minority stress: Risky alcohol use and coping-motivated drinking behavior in African American college students.

A motivational drinking framework is utilized to understand the relationship between minority stressors (e.g., race-related stress and acculturative stress) and alcohol use behaviors (risky alcohol use and coping-motivated drinking) among a large sample of Black American college students. Six hundred forty-nine Black college students from 8 colleges and universities in the United States were recruited as part of a large, multiwave, cross-sectional study investigating the stress and coping experiences of Black emerging adults. Results from the current investigation provide support for the indep

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) response to alcohol pictures predicts subsequent transition to heavy drinking in college students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Young adults show the highest rates of escalating drinking, yet the neural risk mechanisms remain unclear. Heavy drinkers show variant functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response to alcohol cues, which may presage increasing drinking. In this longitudinal study, we ascertained whether BOLD response to alcohol pictures predicted subsequent heavy drinking among college students. METHODS: Participants were 43 18-21-year-olds in the United States who underwent BOLD scanning and completed monthly substance use surveys over the foll

Intolerance of Uncertainty, Negative Reinforcement Alcohol Use Motives, and Hazardous Drinking in College Students with Clinically Elevated Worry.

Background: Hazardous drinking has remained high for college students in recent years, and individuals who endorse drinking to cope with emotional distress or to conform socially report higher levels of alcohol use. Intolerance of uncertainty, a core process underlying generalized anxiety disorder, has been linked to negative reinforcement drinking motives; however, no research, to date, has examined the role of intolerance of uncertainty in terms of alcohol use motives and hazardous drinking among individuals with generalized anxiety disorder. Objective: The current study was designed to exam

Perceived discrimination and anxiety sensitivity in terms of alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and drinking coping motives among racially/ethnically minoritized college students.

Introduction: Across the college student population within the United States (U.S.), alcohol misuse is a problematic addictive behavior. However, there is limited knowledge about the social determinants of health and individual difference factors related to alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and coping motives for drinking among racial/ethnic minority college students. The present study investigated the singular and interactive effects of perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and anxiety sensitivity in relation to alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and coping motives f

Environmental and Social Contexts Associated with Impulsivity and Alcohol Use Among Heavy Drinking College Students.

Background: Although impulsivity is strongly linked to alcohol use, few studies have examined contextual factors that may impact impulsivity in real time. Thus, this study aimed to (1) determine which locations, social settings, and drinking contexts were associated with impulsivity and (2) examine whether the association between impulsivity and alcohol use in-the-moment was moderated by context. Methods: Participants were 89 (47 women) heavy drinking, college students who completed a 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study. Each day, participants completed three random reports, and

Associations between drinking-related eating restriction behaviors and alcohol outcomes among college students.

UNLABELLED: Eating restrictions and alcohol use are prevalent problems on college campuses. Some students engage in eating restrictions prior to drinking to limit overall caloric intake or enhance intoxication. Limited research suggests drinking-related eating restrictions are associated with unique health risks relative to high-risk drinking alone. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between drinking-related eating restrictions and typical past 3-month alcohol consumption (quantity, frequency, binge-drinking, peak drinks) and problems, and assessed whether psychological factors (i.e., sel

The dynamic nature of injunctive drinking norms and within-person associations with college student alcohol use.

Objective: Perceptions of friends' approval of drinking behaviors (i.e., injunctive drinking norms) play a central role in shaping college students' alcohol use behaviors. However, we know little about the extent that students' perceptions of friends' approval fluctuate over time and whether there are within-person associations between these injunctive norms and alcohol use. To fill this knowledge gap, we estimated within-person variability in perceptions of friends' approval of alcohol use across a 12-month period and examined within-person associations between perceptions of friends' approva

Depressive symptoms, ruminative thinking, drinking motives, and alcohol outcomes: A multiple mediation model among college students in three countries.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that ruminative thinking (specifically problem-focused thoughts) may explain why individuals engage in drinking to cope (DTC) when dealing with depressive symptoms; which in turn leads to increased negative alcohol-related consequences. Cross-cultural studies addressing these phenomena are scarce. OBJECTIVES: The present study cross-culturally tested whether four rumination facets (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) uniquely mediate the relationships between depressive symptoms and drinking mo

Alcohol-related aggression and drinking at off-campus parties and bars: a national study of current drinkers in college.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines relationships between alcohol-related aggression and drinking at off-campus parties and bars. Other background variables include gender, year in school, residence and heavy drinking in college. METHOD: The study participants were respondents in the 1997 and 1999 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study, national surveys of students attending 119 4-year U.S. colleges. Based on responses from 8,426 students, 18-24 years of age, who were never married and who reported attendance at off-campus parties and bars in the past month, an exploratory factor an

Trends in college binge drinking during a period of increased prevention efforts. Findings from 4 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study surveys: 1993-2001.

The 2001 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study surveyed students at 119 4-year colleges that participated in the 1993, 1997, and 1999 studies. Responses in the 4 survey years were compared to determine trends in heavy alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, and encounters with college and community prevention efforts. In 2001, approximately 2 in 5 (44.4%) college students reported binge drinking, a rate almost identical to rates in the previous 3 surveys. Very little change in overall binge drinking occurred at the individual college level. The percentages of abstainers and freq

Evaluating effects of feedback on college students' self-reports of alcohol consumption and standard drink free-pours.

Excessive alcohol consumption is a concern on college campuses, yet most data are gathered from self-report surveys, which require college students to identify standard drink sizes. Unfortunately, they typically cannot define or pour standard drinks, rendering the reliability and validity of these data questionable. Researchers have suggested the provision of feedback to college students might improve these skills. However, evidence for this is limited by lack of repeated measures, little evaluation of the effects of feedback on observable behavior (e.g., free-pour), and aggregate data. The cu

Imposter syndrome and college students' drinking behaviors: The roles of negative affect and coping motivated alcohol use.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: College students are known to frequently engage in alcohol consumption, and are at risk for developing dangerous drinking patterns (e.g., binge drinking). Since imposter syndrome occurs at high rates among undergraduate students, it is reasonable to assume that college students may experience its negative effects, such as anxiety and depression. Given the relation of anxiety and depression to worse drinking outcomes, imposter syndrome may also be related to greater drinking and related problems. Yet, this is the first known study to test whether imposter syndrome is
