Acute impact of caffeinated alcoholic beverages on cognition: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Energy drinks are popular beverages that are supposed to counteract sleepiness, increase energy, maintain alertness and reduce symptoms of hangover. Cognitive enhancing seems to be related to many compounds such as caffeine, taurine and vitamins. Currently, users mostly combine psychostimulant effects of energy drinks to counteract sedative effects of alcohol. However, recent literature suggests that this combination conducts to feel less intoxicated but still impaired. The goal of the present article is to review cognitive impact and subjective awareness in case of caffeinated a

Consuming non-alcoholic beer and other beverages during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

QUESTION: An increasing number of my patients are asking about the safety of consuming non-alcoholic beer and other alcohol-free versions of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as they believe that these drinks might be a "safer" alternative to regular alcoholic beverages. What are Motherisk's recommendations regarding these products? ANSWER: Such drinks might contain higher ethanol levels than what is indicated on their labels. As there is no known safe level of alcohol intake in pregnancy, abstinence from non-alcoholic beverages would eliminate any risk of fetal alcohol

[Health counseling about alcoholic beverage consumption].

This paper reviews the scientific evidence on the relationship between consumption of alcoholic beverages and health, at the individual and population levels. This evidence is used to inform the health counselling on such consumption. We propose that during the individual clinical encounter, the counselling should be adapted to clinical characteristics of the patient (mainly age and cardiovascular risk), consider the patient preferences (because there are alternatives to alcohol for cardiovascular prevention for those who do not like alcohol), and prudent ('primum non nocere'). For the populat

Monitoring, exposure and risk assessment of formaldehyde in alcoholic beverages in Korea.

Formaldehyde occurs naturally in food and alcoholic beverages. Formaldehyde and alcoholic beverages can cause various health problems, including irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, respiratory problems, and skin rashes. Alcoholic beverage samples (N = 236) were collected and analyzed for formaldehyde by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The highest average concentrations were detected in fruit wines (1.71 µg/g), followed by wines (1.15 µg/g), cheongju (0.95 µg/g), soju (0.85 µg/g), takju (0.64 µg/g) and beers (0.61 µg/g). We assessed the exposure and risk assessment to form

Beverages and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): Think before you drink.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Beverages and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) both the terms are associated with westernized diet and sedentary lifestyle. Throughout recent decades, dietary changes have boosted demand of beverages to meet the liquid consumption needs, among which rising consumption of several calorie-rich beverages have increased the risk of fatty liver disease. Meanwhile, certain beverages have capacity to deliver many unanticipated health benefits thereby reducing the burden of NAFLD and metabolic diseases. The present review therefore addresses the increasing interconnections

[The influence of ethanol in alcoholic beverages in extracranial carotid arteries atherosclerosis].

UNLABELLED: There is less incidence of occlusive cerebrovascular disease, of coronarian atherosclerosis and of other arteries with a light to moderate consumption of alcohol, suggesting that the same may occur with respect with the extracranial carotid arteries. Using color Doppler ultrasonography, we studied 328 extracranial carotid arteries of white male and females over 35 year old, with normal blood pressure, non-smokers and free of the main diseases make up the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. They were stratified, according to the level of weekly alcohol consumption in millilite

Determination of purine contents of alcoholic beverages using high performance liquid chromatography.

The purine contents of alcoholic beverages were determined in order to utilize them in the dietary care of gout and hyperuricemia. In the management of these diseases, restriction of both alcohol and purine intake are important. The method employed in this study is a quantitative determination of purine contents by HPLC. Alcoholic beverages were hydrolyzed to corresponding purine bases, which were then separated by HPLC, and base peaks were identified using an enzymatic peak-shift technique. This method is sufficiently accurate and reproducible to examine the purine contents of various alcohol

Epidemiologic evidence for the cardioprotective effects associated with consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The impact of alcohol intake on mortality from all causes has been described in a large number of prospective population studies from many countries. Most have shown a J-shaped relation between alcohol intake and subsequent mortality, indicating that there are both beneficial and harmful effects of ethanol on health. The risk of death from ischemic heart disease is seen to be significantly increased, and highest among abstainers, but not significantly increased among heavy drinkers. Some studies have found plausible mechanisms for the beneficial effect of light to moderate drinking. Subjects w

A selective separation of alcoholic beverages and distilled wines by gas chromatography.

The MFE-Vinicol column (Análisis Vínicos; Spain) was developed for the analysis of alcoholic beverages. Fusel alcohols at low concentrations, including 2-propanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, and ethyl butyrate, are determined by a single temperature-programmed analysis using this column. This column has important advantages over the official columns recommended by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists and other official methods for this kind of analysis.

Effect of the type of beverage and meat consumed by alcoholics with alcoholic liver disease.

We analyzed meat products and alcoholic beverage preference in patients with the three stages of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) compared with controls using diet history data. Daily consumption of total alcohol, types of alcoholic beverages, and types of meat and meat products in grams was obtained by dietary history taken from patients with biopsy proven stage of ALD. A strong association was found between the ALD subjects and total alcohol and beer consumption. There was a significant increase in the consumption of total pig products, pork, and offal in the ALD groups compared with controls.

On the potential health effects of consuming "non-alcoholic" or "de-alcoholized" beverages.

This paper reviews the potential health risks for persons who consume the newly available "non-alcoholic" or "de-alcoholized" beverages which may contain trace amounts of ethanol (less than 0.5% by volume). The discussion includes relative risk rates for chemical dependency, fetal alcohol syndrome, chemical and natural hypersensitivity, cancer, cardiomyopathy, hypertension and cirrhosis for those who drink standard alcoholic drinks and "non-alcoholic" drinks. It is concluded that non-alcoholic drinks pose little risk for developing alcohol related problems based on our current physiological an

Rapid and Direct Determination of Methanol in Alcoholic Beverages by Ion Mobility Spectrometry.

This work introduces a new method for direct detection of methanol in alcoholic beverages, using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), headspace sampling (HS), and Tenax adsorbent preseparation (HS-Tenax-IMS). An ionization method based on the dopant gases was employed to overcome the overlapping of the reactant ions with the methanol peak. Six different ketones dopants were tested, and 2-heptanone was selected as the optimal variant. Tenax-GR column was used for both HS and as a preseparation method of methanol and ethanol prior to IMS detection. The optimum sampling time of 15 min was achieved, a

Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for a rapid determination of glyoxal in alcoholic beverages.

Carbonyl compounds, like glyoxal, methylglyoxal, diacetyl or pentane-2,3-dione, among others, have been widely studied. Besides its endogenous origin, they are originated from foodstuffs and are related to sensorial characteristics in products such as wine and beer. Generally, for their determination, the analytes must be derivatised to adapt them for the detection system and this step takes long time. The main aim of this research was to develop a simultaneous derivatization and extraction method which takes place in only few minutes. 3,4-diaminopyridine, as derivatizing reagent, generate a f

Specific bioanalytical optical and photoelectrochemical assays for detection of methanol in alcoholic beverages.

Methanol is a poison which is frequently discovered in alcoholic beverages. Innovative methods to detect methanol in alcoholic beverages are being constantly developed. We report for the first time a new strategy for the detection of methanol using fluorescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis. The analytical system is based on the oxidation of cysteine (CSH) with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) enzymatically generated by alcohol oxidase (AOx). H2O2 oxidizes capping agent CSH, modulating the growth of CSH-stabilized cadmium sulphide quantum dots (CdS QDs). Disposable screen-printe
