Medication-enhanced behavior therapy for alcohol use disorder: Naltrexone, Alcoholics Anonymous Facilitation, and OPRM1 genetic variation.

Medication-assisted behavior treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) holds promise to enhance the efficacy of medication and of behavior therapy when administered individually. The present study examines the treatment benefit of combined outpatient naltrexone (NTX) treatment with Alcoholics Anonymous Facilitation (AAF) behavior therapy, in the context of OPRM1 genotype. The minor OPRM1 Asp40 G-allele has been associated with greater positive reinforcing effects of alcohol consumption and greater alcohol craving, suggesting that individuals carrying the OPRM1 G allele may have an improved nalt

Efficacy of 12-step mutual-help groups other than Alcoholics Anonymous: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This paper offers a systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies on the main twelve-step mutual-help (TSMH) groups (excluding Alcoholics Anonymous) and four meta-analyses exploring the correlation between (i) duration or involvement in TSMH groups and; (ii) severity of symptoms or quality of life. Systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Searches of databases (MEDLINE, PsychInfo), a register (ClinicalTrials) and citations were conducted, from inception through November 01 2022. Fifty five articles were included (24 quantitative, 27 qualitative, 4 mixed-methods)

Lifetime Alcoholics Anonymous attendance as a predictor of spiritual gains in the Relapse Replication and Extension Project (RREP).

This study investigated the association between extent of lifetime attendance in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and spiritual gains among treatment seeking adults for alcohol use disorder. Participants included 246 individuals from 2 of the 3 sites in the Relapse Replication and Extension Project (Lowman, Allen, Stout, & The Relapse Research Group, 1996). Baseline characteristics included 63% male, 39.9% single, and the average age was 34 years (SD = 8.2). The Alcoholics Anonymous Involvement questionnaire (Tonigan, Connors, & Miller, 1996) was used to assess lifetime AA attendance. The Religious B

The effect of alcoholics anonymous group participation on flourishing in Turkey: the mediating role of hope and social support.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant public health issue that negatively impacts individuals’ flourishing, social relationships, and life satisfaction. In recent years, the concept of recovery has been approached as encompassing not only the reduction or cessation of alcohol use but also the strengthening of positive psychology-based resources such as hope, social support, and developmental flourishing. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups are an important community-based intervention that can contribute to the development of these resources through mutual experience sharing and

Alcoholics Anonymous attendance, decreases in impulsivity and drinking and psychosocial outcomes over 16 years: moderated-mediation from a developmental perspective.

AIMS: To examine whether decreases in impulsivity account for links between Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) attendance and better drinking and psychosocial outcomes, and whether these mediational 'effects' are conditional on age. DESIGN: A naturalistic study in which individuals were assessed at baseline, and 1, 8 and 16 years later. SETTING: Participants initiated help-seeking through the alcohol intervention system (detoxification programs, information and referral centers). PARTICIPANTS: Individuals with alcohol use disorders and no prior history of substance abuse treatment at baseline [n=628

[Features of the implementation of 12-step treatment programs for Alcoholics Anonymous and other programs for the treatment of alcohol use disorders].

Alcoholism remains an urgent problem, as alcohol-related mortality is approximately 10 times higher than that from all drugs and accounts for 5.1% of the total global burden of disease. The solution to this problem is multifaceted and includes a wide range of medical services. The article on alcohol use disorders provides an overview of one of the largest support programs for people with alcohol dependence - Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). It is noted that the initial AA intervention includes work through social communication and the «12 steps» program. Its purpose is to facilitate internal psychol

Personality correlates of past-year alcohol use in individuals with severe alcohol use disorder and a lifetime history of involvement in alcoholics anonymous.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a highly impairing condition with important public health impacts. Despite the availability of treatment options for AUD, research shows that few people receive treatment, and even fewer can maintain abstinence/low-drinking levels. This study investigated the role of personality traits in past-year alcohol use among individuals with severe AUD who ever attended Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a widespread and easily accessible self-help group for alcohol problems. METHODS: Univariable and multivariable regressions were performed separately in females and m

An experimental evaluation of assessment reactivity in ecological momentary assessment of alcoholics anonymous involvement and alcohol-related outcomes: One day at a time.

OBJECTIVE: Assessment reactivity refers to the extent to which repeated measurement of behavioral and psychological phenomena influences subsequent behavior change. The present study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to evaluate whether frequent self-report influences Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)-related processes and alcohol-related outcomes. METHOD: Participants (N = 192; 63% female, Mage = 42.95) were assigned to either a 6-month EMA condition (n = 133), completing twice-daily surveys in addition to baseline and 3- and 6-month follow-up assessments, or a minimal assessment condition

Impact of nurse-led anonymous coaching on alcohol craving and motivation to change behaviour among patients with alcohol dependence.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic condition marked by compulsive alcohol consumption despite its harmful effects. Harmful alcohol use leads to over 2.6 million deaths annually worldwide. This study assessed the impact of nurse-initiated anonymous coaching sessions on alcohol cravings and motivation to change behavior in alcohol-dependent patients. Over four weeks, 100 participants were divided into experimental and control groups, with the experimental group showing significant reductions in cravings and improvements in motivation. Thus, we show that nurse-led behavioral coaching is an e

[Social network, alcohol drinking habits and injuries caused by violence among women and men in the county of Akershus. Results from anonymous questionnaires among persons aged 40-42 years. 1990-91].

All residents aged 40-42 in Akershus county were invited to screening for cardiovascular risk factors in 1990-91 as part of a prevention programme. Of the 13,607 attendants, 8,960 answered an anonymous questionnaire about social network, drinking habits, and injuries due to violence. Compared with data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, our material included a high percentage of persons with a higher education, a high percentage of married persons, and a low percentage of persons living alone. Results in respect of social network and drinking habits roughly agreed with those of other studi

The origins of the Minnesota model of addiction treatment--a first person account.

The Minnesota Model, also known as the abstinence model, of addiction treatment was created in a state mental hospital in the 1950s by two young men, one who was to become a psychologist, the other who was to become a psychiatrist, neither of whom had prior experience treating addicts or alcoholics. The model spread first to a small not-for-profit organization called the Hazelden Foundation and then throughout the country. The key element of this novel approach to addiction treatment was the blending of professional and trained nonprofessional (recovering) staff around the principles of Alcoho

Alone on the Inside: The Impact of Social Isolation and Helping Others on AOD Use and Criminal Activity.

Because addiction is a socially isolating disease, social support for recovery is an important element of treatment planning. This study examines the relationship between social isolation, giving and receiving social support in Alcoholics Anonymous during treatment, and post-treatment outcomes among juvenile offenders court-referred to addiction treatment. Adolescents (N = 195) aged 14 to 18 years were prospectively assessed at treatment admission, treatment discharge, 6 months, and 12 months after treatment discharge. The influence of social isolation variables on relapse and severe criminal

Managing Alcohol Use Disorder in Alcohol-Related Liver Disease.

This review article focuses on the management of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in patients with comorbid alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). We highlight the importance of different screening tools for AUD in addition to the role of FDA and off-label medications for AUD and ALD treatment. For long-term recovery, we also speak to the importance of non-pharmacological interventions, including mutual aid organizations such as alcohols anonymous, peer recovery specialists, and emerging digital tools. Through a combination of these different tools, we can aid in patients in alcohol consumption red

Enhancing care in alcohol-associated liver disease through peer support for alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) are interconnected conditions that contribute significantly to global morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in medical management, care for individuals with AUD and ALD remains suboptimal due to persistent gaps in psychosocial support, stigma, and limited integration between behavioral health care including AUD treatment services and hepatology. Peer support, emotional, informational, and practical assistance provided by individuals with lived experience, has emerged as a promising, though underutilized, strategy to addr

Depression and alcoholism: clinical considerations in management.

When alcohol abuse occurs with depression, both the substance abuse and the mood disorder necessitate treatment. These conditions may have some similar manifestations, making differential diagnosis difficult. Depressed alcoholics report more previous treatment for substance abuse, withdrawal symptoms, and marital problems than those without depression. They also incur greater loneliness, unemployment, and social ineptness. Depressive symptoms found commonly in this group include work inhibition, guilt, self-disgust, dissatisfaction, and social disinterest. A history of depression among relativ

AA, Bill Wilson, Carl Jung and LSD.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an established resource for people suffering from alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, Bill Wilson, the co-founder of AA, in his second letter to Jung referred to its low success rate. One evidence-based alternative, dating back to the 1950s, is the clinical use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for treating AUD. Bill Wilson was a strong advocate of using LSD as a preparation for alcoholics who had difficulty grasping the spiritual aspect of the 12-step programme. Bill Wilson wrote a "secret" four-page letter to Carl Jung detailing his own use of LSD and the succ
