More than 7000 red algae species have been classified. Although most of them are underused, they are a protein-rich marine resource. The hydrolysates of red algal proteins are good candidates for the inhibition of the angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE). The ACE is one of the key factors for cardiovascular disease, and the inhibition of ACE activity is related to the prevention of high blood pressure. To better understand the relationship between the hydrolysates of red algal proteins and the inhibition of ACE activity, we attempted to identify novel ACE inhibitory peptides from Pyropia pseu

BACKGROUND: Lobosphaera incisa (L. incisa) is an oleaginous microalga that stores triacylglycerol (TAG) rich in arachidonic acid in lipid bodies (LBs). This organelle is gaining attention in algal research, since evidence is accumulating that proteins attached to its surface fulfill important functions in TAG storage and metabolism.
RESULTS: Here, the composition of the LB proteome in L incisa was investigated by comparing different cell fractions in a semiquantitative proteomics approach. After applying stringent filters to the proteomics data in order to remove contaminating proteins from t

Algae are susceptible to enrofloxacin (ENR), an antibiotic frequently detected in aquatic environments. However, algal responses, especially the secretion and roles of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), under ENR exposure remain unknown. This study is the first to elucidate the variation in algal EPS triggered by ENR at both the physiological and molecular levels. The results showed that EPS were significantly (P < 0.05) overproduced along with increased polysaccharide and protein contents in algae exposed to 0.05, 0.5, and 5 mg/L ENR. Secretion of aromatic proteins, especially tryptoph

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is involved in the conversion of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to oxaloacetate (OAA). In addition to playing a role in gluconeogenesis in various organisms, PEPCK also functions in the C4 cycle to concentrate CO2 for photosynthesis in some C4 plants. Brown algae harbor genes related to the C4 cycle, including the PEPCK gene, and are proposed to employ a C4 cycle-like pathway. However, little is known about the CO2-concentrating mechanisms and the properties of the enzymes involved in brown algae. Here, we obtained soluble recombinant PEPCKs of five brown a

The sea slug Elysia chlorotica offers a unique opportunity to study the evolution of a novel function (photosynthesis) in a complex multicellular host. Elysia chlorotica harvests plastids (absent of nuclei) from its heterokont algal prey, Vaucheria litorea. The "stolen" plastids are maintained for several months in cells of the digestive tract and are essential for animal development. The basis of long-term maintenance of photosynthesis in this sea slug was thought to be explained by extensive horizontal gene transfer (HGT) from the nucleus of the alga to the animal nucleus, followed by expres

Microalgae-based DeNOx technology, as an emerging approach for flue gas denitrification, is suitable for the deep treatment of NOx at medium to low concentrations. To address the ambiguity surrounding the removal pathways and mechanisms in the development of microalgae DeNOx technology, the pathways and mechanisms of NO removal within a microalgae cultivation system was investigated. By investigating the gas-liquid and liquid-solid nitrogen transfer pathways facilitated by algal cells, algal cells were found to play a pivotal role in NO removal by the T. obliquus PF3 cultivation system. Three strains of filamentous Cyanobacteria were used to study their growth and utilization of organophosphorus pesticide malathion. A sharp decrease in the growth of the algal strains was observed by increasing the concentration of malathion. Amongst them Nostoc muscorum tolerated different concentrations and was recorded as the highest efficient strain for biodegradation (91%) of this compound. Moreover, carbohydrate and protein content of their cells overtopped the other strains especially at higher concentrations. The algal strains were further subjected to grow under P-limitation in absenc

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a multidrug-resistant pathogen, poses a significant threat to global healthcare. This review evaluates the potential of marine algal metabolites as novel antibacterial agents against MRSA. We explore the clinical importance of S. aureus, the emergence of MRSA as a "superbug", and its resistance mechanisms, including target modification, drug inactivation, efflux pumps, biofilm formation, and quorum sensing. The limitations of conventional antibiotics (e.g., β-lactams, vancomycin, macrolides) are discussed, alongside the promise of algal-deriv

The study presents a novel approach to tackling algal-induced disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in water treatment using potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) composites coated with paraffin or β-cyclodextrin. The encapsulation technology significantly enhances Fe(VI) stability and enables controlled release, mitigating rapid self-decomposition and oxidative overreaction. Composite materials were synthesized via melt suspension and host-guest encapsulation, achieving encapsulation efficiencies >90 % for paraffin (mass ratio 7:1) and 70 % for β-cyclodextrin. Sustained-release kinetics followed non-Fickian di

The diatom genus Entomoneis is known from the benthos and plankton of marine, brackish, and freshwaters. Entomoneis includes diatoms with a bilobate keel elevated above the valve surface, a sigmoid canal raphe, and numerous girdle bands. Owing mostly to the scarcity of molecular data for a diverse set of species, the phylogeny of Entomoneis has not been investigated in depth. The few previous studies that included Entomoneis were focused on broader questions and the available data were from a small number of either unidentified Entomoneis or well-known species (e.g., E. paludosa). The effects of different dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) associated with distinct iron conditions (iron deficient (dFe), ferric ions (Fe3+), and colloidal iron (CFe)) on algal growth and arsenate (As(V)) metabolism were systematically evaluated and compared in Microcystis aeruginosa. Two chemical forms of DOP (D-glucose-6-phosphate (GP) and phytic acid (PA)), as well as dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), were employed as distinct phosphorus environments. The results revealed that As(V) metabolism of M. aeruginosa was more influenced by different phosphorus forms than by different iron co

Approximately one-third of global CO2 assimilation is performed by the pyrenoid, a liquid-like organelle found in most algae and some plants. Specialized pyrenoid-traversing membranes are hypothesized to drive CO2 assimilation in the pyrenoid by delivering concentrated CO2, but how these membranes are made to traverse the pyrenoid matrix remains unknown. Here we show that proteins SAGA1 and MITH1 cause membranes to traverse the pyrenoid matrix in the model alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Mutants deficient in SAGA1 or MITH1 lack matrix-traversing membranes and exhibit growth defects under CO2-l

The antitumour activities of extracts from the Red Sea seaweeds Jania rubens, Sargassum subrepandum, and Ulva lactuca were investigated in an in vivo mice model based on intramuscular injection of Ehrlich ascites tumour cells. In parallel, antioxidant activities were measured. Tumour marker levels, liver biochemical parameters, and hepatic oxidant/antioxidant status were measured to prove the anticancer and antioxidant nature of the algal extracts. Significant decreases in carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and a-fetoprotein (AFP) levels, activities of liver enzymes, levels of nitric oxide (NO) an

Photosynthetic protists, known as microalgae, face increasing temperatures due to climate change. The green biflagellate alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Chlamydomonas) serves as a model for thermoregulation. While responses to thermal stress are well characterized, much less is known about the impact of ambient temperature shifts. Understanding microalgal responses to environmental temperature changes is critical, as these primary producers drive ecosystem productivity and food web dynamics. Here, Chlamydomonas grew mixotrophically at ambient temperatures from 18 °C to 33 °C. Transcriptomic pr

The global escalation of viral outbreaks, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, highlights the urgent need for effective antiviral agents against emerging infections. Despite their importance, quarantine and vaccination alone are insufficient, necessitating advanced approaches for effective viral infection control. One such strategy involves investigating efficacious antiviral agents that don't induce toxicity. Algal polysaccharides represent a significant frontier in pharmacological research for the development of novel antiviral therapeutics. Unlike other sources, marine a

Algal blooms bring massive amounts of algal organic matter (AOM) into eutrophic lakes, which influences microbial methylmercury (MeHg) production. However, because of the complexity of AOM and its dynamic changes during algal decomposition, the relationship between AOM and microbial Hg methylators remains poorly understood, which hinders predicting MeHg production and its bioaccumulation in eutrophic shallow lakes. To address that, we explored the impacts of AOM on microbial Hg methylators and MeHg production by characterizing dissolved organic matter with Fourier transform ion cyclotron reson

The overgrowth of algae, such as Spirogyra communis (S. communis), has emerged as a significant ecological issue, exacerbated by the increasing problem of eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. S. communis overgrowth can result in the deterioration of water quality and a decline in biodiversity. To mitigate the proliferation of S. communis under conditions of water eutrophication, the inhibitory effects of ethanol extracts from gramineous plants, Zizania latifolia (Z. latifolia), Phragmites australis (P. australis), and Digitaria sanguinalis (D. sanguinalis) on the growth of S. communis were in

In Chlorella sorokiniana (211/8k), glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH-EC 1.1.1.49) activity is similar in both N-starved cells and nitrate-grown algae when expressed on a PCV basis. A single G6PDH isoform was purified from Chlorella cells grown under different nutrient conditions; the presence of a single G6PDH was confirmed by native gels stained for enzyme activity and by Western blots. The algal G6PDH is recognised only by antibodies raised against higher plants plastidic protein, but not by chloroplastic and cytosolic isoform-specific antisera. Purified G6PDH showed kinetic parameter
