The Mediterranean seagrass species Posidonia oceanica forms extensive meadows that provide numerous ecological and economic services. Among the human activities threatening these meadows, boat anchoring causes severe degradation resulting in meadow fragmentation, exposure of the dead matte, and sediment disruption. In this study, we assessed the natural recolonisation dynamics of P. oceanica in anchoring-degraded sites focusing on both shallow and deep sites. Over two years, photogrammetry was employed to monitor recolonisation dynamics with a focus on patchs' edges expansion and storm-fragmen

Hyaluronidase is present virtually in all snake venoms and has been known as a "spreading factor." The enzyme damages the extracellular matrix at the site of the bite, leading to severe morbidity. In this study, the benefits of inhibiting the hyaluronidase activity of Indian cobra (Naja naja) venom have been investigated. Anti-NNH1 and aristolochic acid both inhibited the in vitro activity of the purified hyaluronidase, (NNH1) and the hyaluronidase activity of whole venom in a dose-dependent manner. Both anti-NNH1 and aristolochic acid abolished the degradation of hyaluronan in human skin tiss

The current study presents the results of an experiment carried to assess the impact of azithromycin, a COVID-19 drug, probably accumulated in marine sediments for three years, since the start of the pandemic, on benthic marine nematodes. It was explored the extent to which a common macrophyte from the Mediterranean Sea influenced the toxic impact of azithromycin on meiobenthic nematodes. Metals are known to influence toxicity of azithromycin. The nematofauna from a metallically pristine site situated in Bizerte bay, Tunisia, was exposed to two concentrations of azithromycin [i.e. 5 and 10 μg

The accumulation of cadmium or mercury and the effect of these elements on the levels of non-protein thiols in the blades of the marine macrophyte Posidonia oceanica were investigated. A significant accumulation of cadmium or mercury, dependent on metal concentration supplied, was observed in metal-treated blades. In the blades treated either with cadmium or mercury, a significant increase in the levels of non-protein thiols (other than glutathione) and a marked depletion of the reduced glutathione content as a function of the metal, exposure time and metal concentration supplied were found. Anthropogenic pollution in developed coastal areas often causes widespread seagrass loss. In Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, industrial run-off drastically reduced cover of Posidonia spp. by 77% in the 1960s-1990s. Despite significant water quality improvements, natural recovery remains limited, potentially due to legacy pollution and phytotoxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production in sediments. Using a novel multidisciplinary approach combining metabolomics, nutrient (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus), and δ34S isotope analysis, we assessed whether capping existing sediment with clean, dredged ma

Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) are important precursors of tropospheric atmospheric pollutants such as ozone and secondary organic aerosols. Thus, it is crucial to characterize BVOCs sources at regional and global scales. Marine environments, especially benthic ecosystems, are still overlooked although they can produce a wide range of BVOCs. In this study, BVOCs emissions from Posidonia oceanica, the main seagrass species in the Mediterranean Sea, were characterised over several days using dynamic enclosure systems. A total of 105 different compounds were detected through PTR-ToF-

Ocean acidification (OA), characterized by changes in seawater chemistry and a concomitant decline of pH due to the uptake by seawater of the atmospheric CO2, will profoundly shape marine ecosystems. The lower pH/higher pCO2 can act negatively (as a stressor for organisms with a calcareous exoskeleton) or positively (as a direct resource for primary producers like macrophytes). Consequently, herbivores may indirectly benefit from OA counteracting the direct negative effects of living under high pCO2/low pH conditions. Here, we investigated how OA may influence site fidelity, habitat use, and t

Pharmaceutical residues released into the environment are posing more and more public health problems. It is worthwhile to study the retention of pharmaceuticals residues by adsorption on solid supports. Batch sorption experiments are intended to identify the adsorption isotherms of the pharmaceutically active ingredient on the biomaterials. The results obtained in this study have shown that the retention possibilities of these compounds by bio-adsorbents (clay and sand) are not significant. The negligible sorption for these media is explained by the low hydrophobicity of paracetamol (Log K(ow

Sunscreen products usually contain a wide range of substances, including inorganic and organic ultraviolet (UV) filters, which belong to the main groups of contaminants of emerging concern for marine ecosystems. Research on the effects of sunscreen pollution in the Mediterranean marine biota is scarce, limiting the information necessary to promote sustainable coastal tourism through environmental policies that protect priority species for conservation against potentially harmful substances. The impacts of sunscreen components on Posidonia oceanica were assessed through short-term (48 h) in sit

The Florida manatee is regularly exposed to high volumes of vessel traffic and other human-related noise because of its coastal distribution. Quantifying specific aspects of the manatee's acoustic environment will allow for a better understanding of how these animals respond to both natural and human-induced changes in their environment. Transmission loss measurements were made in 24 sampling sites that were chosen based on the frequency of manatee presence. The Monterey-Miami Parabolic Equation model was used to relate environmental parameters to transmission loss in two extremely shallow wat

Seagrasses are marine angiosperms re-adapted to underwater life, forming productive ecosystems and long-term carbon sinks. Posidonia oceanica thrives up to 50 m depth, where light is scarce and spectrally shifted; yet, the molecular basis of its photosynthetic adaptation remains unclear. Here, we report that P. oceanica genetically adapts for highly efficient photon use under dim light by enhancing photosystem antenna size and reducing exciton trapping time. We determine the structures of P. oceanica PSI supercomplexes by cryo-electron microscopy, revealing an expanded antenna system composed

Application of low doses of alum to treatment wetlands to reduce elevated outflow winter phosphorus concentrations were tested in mesocosms vegetated with either Typhadomingensis, Schoenoplectus californicus, or submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) (Najas guadalupensis-dominated). Alum was pumped to experimental units at a rate of 0.91 g Al m(-2) d(-1) and water quality monitored for 3 months. The alum application significantly improved the outflow water quality and overall the growth of the plants was unaffected by the alum application. Biomass and growth varied between species and through time

Mercury concentrations, non-protein thiol levels and the enzyme activities of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were measured in the blades and sheaths of the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica. The seagrass was collected in January and June and at three sites: the Bay of Rosignano (Italy) known for its mercury contamination, the north of the Lérins islands (Bay of Cannes, France), the Bay of Tonnara (Corsica, France). The two latter sites are considered as free of any known industrial inputs. Mercury concentrations and GST activities in both tissues were always higher in samples from Rosignan

The aim of this study was to examine the experimental uptake of mercury and the enzymatic response, i.e., glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, to this metal introduced into the medium under organic (methylmercury chloride) and nonorganic (mercury chloride) forms. Shoots of Posidonia oceanica were collected in a nonpolluted area in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea and were treated in aquaria with increasing mercury concentrations/exposure times (48, 96, and 144 h). Compared with the controls, a significant uptake was noted in the blades contaminated by HgCl2, whereas in the sheaths, a si

BACKGROUND: The Pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2, nitric oxide and TNF-α are the key players in the stimulation of the inflammatory responses. Thus, the pro-inflammatory mediators are considered to be potential targets for screening nutraceutical with anti-inflammatory activity.
METHODS: In this context, we explored the anti-inflammatory potency of seagrass extract with western blot (Bio-Rad) analysis by using LPS induced RAW macrophages as in-vitro models, western blot analysis, In-silico methods using Mastero 13.0 software.
RESULTS: The anti-inflammatory activity of Seag

Drought is a major abiotic stress limiting plant survival on tropical coral islands. Suriana maritima, an ecologically important shrub species in the Xisha Islands, shows strong adaptation to harsh coastal environments, but its molecular responses to drought remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to characterize leaf responses of S. maritima to progressive drought stress. Severe drought induced extensive transcriptional and metabolic reprogramming, accompanied by leaf yellowing, wilting and partial shedding. Stress-related genes, including those e

Ocean acidification (OA) and global warming (GW) drive a variety of responses in seagrasses that may modify their carbon metabolism, including the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes and the organic carbon stocks in upper sediments. In a 45-day full-factorial mesocosm experiment simulating forecasted CO2 and temperature increase in a Cymodocea nodosa community, we found that net community production (NCP) was higher under OA conditions, particularly when combined with warming (i.e., synergistic effect). Moreover, under OA conditions, an increase in aboveground biomass and photosynthetic shoo

Gene expression analyses reveal tissue-specific and temporally regulated networks driving Posidonia oceanica development, and identify key hub genes that coordinate root, leaf, and seed maturation. Seagrasses are marine angiosperms that form extensive underwater meadows, providing habitat, stabilising sediments, storing carbon, and protecting coastlines. Posidonia oceanica is the endemic foundation seagrass of the Mediterranean Sea, yet its meadows are rapidly declining. Despite its ecological importance, the molecular basis of P. oceanica development is still poorly understood. Here, we analy

Nutrient removal in treatment wetlands declines during winter months due to temperature. A 3-mo (wintertime) mesocosm study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of alum in immobilizing P as well as other nutrients during this period of reduced treatment efficiency. Eighteen mesocosms, triplicate alum, and three controls or no alum were established with either Typha spp., Schoenoplectus californicus, or SAV (Najas guadalupensis-dominated). Alum was delivered by timer at a rate of 0.81 g Al m(-2) d(-1) and parameters measured included: pH, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total phospho

The present study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial and modulating activity of the ethanol extract obtained from the leaves, stems, and roots of Cnidoscolus urens in multiresistant bacteria. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values obtained for the extracts of leaves, stems, and roots were greater than 1024 µg/mL for all isolates. In the antimicrobial resistance modulation test, the extract of the leaves of C. urens showed a better modulating effect than that of the stems and roots for gentamicin, highlighting the reduction of MIC for Escherichia coli, Lactococcus garvieae and Staph
