The allergens in cosmetics.

The ingredients responsible for allergy to cosmetics were determined in 119 patients suffering from cosmetic-related contact dermatitis. Most reactions (56.3%) were caused by skin care products, followed by nail cosmetics (13.4%), perfumes (8.4%), and hair cosmetics (5.9%). Preservatives were most frequently implicated (32.0%), followed by fragrances (26.5%) and emulsifiers (14.3%). By far the most important cosmetic allergen was Kathon CG, (a preservative system containing, as active ingredients, a mixture of methylisothiazolinone and methyl chloroisothiazolinone) reacting in 33 patients (27.

[Allergens in the household].

As an introduction a survey is given of the great changes the biotope "household" has undergone during the last decades which had quite important consequences regarding the composition and quantity of the allergens found there. Organic substances are of primary importance among the inhalation-allergens: especially animals (insects (housedust mites!) and pets), but also moulds and organic dusts. Inorganic substances, like fumes of cleansers or of formaldehyde, act more as primary irritants and only rarely cause real allergies. Among contact-allergens on the contrary, inorganic substances like m

Allergens of Schistosoma mansoni. II. Fractionation and characterization of S. mansoni egg allergens.

The interaction of Schistosoma mansoni crude soluble egg antigen (SEA) with IgE antibodies in sera from S. mansoni-infected mice, rats and humans has been studied by the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and the Prausnitz-Küstner (PK) technique. IgE antibodies recognizing egg antigens were present as early as day 21 after the infection in the mouse sera and day 28 in rat sera. IgE in sera of infected humans reacted with antigenic components in the Mr range 70,000-150,000 and focusing as a broad peak in the pH range 4.5-6.5 as measured by RAST. SDS-PAGE followed by western blotting showed the pre

Standardized allergen extracts for allergen immunotherapy.

Nineteen U.S. allergen extracts were standardized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 1987 and 1998, including of two house-dust mites, short ragweed, cat hair and cat pelt, seven temperate and one southern grass, and six Hymenoptera venom preparations. Relevant literature was reviewed. For each allergen, a "representative" extract was established; the potency of each representative extract was determined by measurement of the total protein content (Hymenoptera venom), radial diffusion measurement of the dominant allergen (short ragweed and cat), or, if there was no dominant

A Review of Honeybee Venom Allergens and Allergenicity.

Honeybee venom is a source of proteins with allergenic properties which can result in in various symptoms, ranging from local reactions through to systematic life-threatening anaphylaxis, or even death. According to the World Allergy Organization (WAO), honeybee venom allergy is one of the most common causes of anaphylaxis. Among the proteins present in honeybee venom, 12 protein fractions were registered by the World Health Organization's Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee (WHO/IUIS) as allergenic. Most of them are highly immunogenic glycoproteins that cross-react with IgE and, as a conseque

Serum albumins-unusual allergens.

BACKGROUND: Albumins are multifunctional proteins present in the blood serum of animals. They can bind and transport a wide variety of ligands which they accommodate due to their conformational flexibility. Serum albumins are highly conserved both in amino acid sequence and three-dimensional structure. Several mammalian and avian serum albumins (SAs) are also allergens. Sensitization to one of the SAs coupled with the high degree of conservation between SAs may result in cross-reactive antibodies in allergic individuals. Sensitivity to SA generally begins with exposure to an aeroallergen, whic

Recognizing and testing allergens.

The diagnosis of a contact allergy requires several important and essential steps, because the failure to recognize a contact allergy can occur in any of the various stages of the contact allergy investigation. If the results of the skin tests are negative for a patient for whom a diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis has been proposed, one has to go back to the beginning, that is, with a thoroughgoing anamnesis of the patient (perhaps with a visit to his or her environment). The assumed allergens must be retested (perhaps in another concentration, with another vehicle, or with another test

Allergens in atopic dermatitis.

Allergens play an essential role in atopic dermatitis, either intrinsic or extrinsic. They provoke cutaneous inflammation via IgE-dependent and cell-mediated immune reactions. Food allergens have a well-known contribution to disease activity of atopic dermatitis, especially in infants and young children. However, the importance of inhaled allergens is still under investigation. For clinical implication, identification of individualized allergens is an ideal strategy for better control of atopic dermatitis and avoidance of atopic march. The aim of this article is to discuss the common allergens

[Food allergens in children].

Food hypersensitivity is increasing, with clinical indications and allergens multiplying and evolving. We report our experience with clinical indications and distribution of allergens in children with food hypersensitivity. Data were established in a prospective study at medical centres in Nancy and Toulouse (France). We studied 378 children with food hypersensitivity indicated by food challenge, which account for 74.2% of food hypersensitivity. Clinical features were: atopic dermatitis (46.5%), urticaria (17.9%), oedema (14.2%), asthma (8.4%), anaphylaxis (5.2%), gastro-intestinal symptoms (2

Preventive allergen immunotherapy with inhalant allergens in children.

The efficacy and safety of preventive allergen immunotherapy (pAIT) in children are currently under investigation. Here, we provide an overview of pAIT with respiratory allergens concerning the prevention of new sensitizations, allergic disease onset and progression as well as further immunomodulatory effects. Three databases were searched for clinical pAIT studies in children. Selected publications were reviewed for preventive outcomes according to prevention level (primary, secondary, and tertiary), allergen type, administration route, dose, and treatment duration. The primary prevention app

Allergen-specific Immunotherapy for Inhalant Allergens in Children.

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) for aeroallergens consists of the administration of standardized allergen extracts to patients with respiratory IgE-mediated diseases to the same allergen in order to achieve immune tolerance to the allergen and prevent the onset of symptoms. AIT is usually delivered by sublingual (SLIT), subcutaneous (SCIT) route. AIT with one or multiple allergens currently represents the only causal treatment able to change the natural history of allergic airway diseases. Significant progresses have been made in terms of AIT efficacy and safety. In this paper, mechanism

Chestnut as a food allergen: identification of major allergens.

To evaluate the clinical significance of chestnut as a food allergen in Korea, skin prick test and ELISA were done in 1,738 patients with respiratory allergies. To identify the IgE binding components, IgE-immunoblotting, 2D IgE-immunoblotting and MALDITOF were performed. To observe the effects of digestive enzymes and a boiling treatment, simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluids (SIF) were incubated with chestnut extracts, and IgE-immunoblotting were then repeated. Skin prick test revealed that 56 (3.2%) patients showed more than 2+ of allergen to histamine ratio to chestn

Potential food allergens in medications.

Excipients are substances in pharmaceuticals other than the active ingredients. Some excipients are foods or substances derived from foods, raising the possibility that these substances would pose a hazard to patients with food allergy. This review describes which food-derived substances are used as pharmaceutical excipients in which medications and reviews published data regarding the safety of the administration of these medications to recipients with food allergy. Such reactions are rare, usually because the amount of food protein is not present in a large enough quantity to elicit a reacti
