The American journal of occupational therapy : official publication of the American Occupational Therapy Association1986eng
Educational experiences and didactic materials on health promotion are necessary for occupational therapists to remain current in the profession. This paper reviews health promotion learning experiences to determine the "state of the art" in this important area. It was found that few papers or workshops have been given at recent AOTA Annual Conferences; five universities received Allied Health Grants, which included occupational therapists, to develop health promotion learning materials; and occupational therapy educational curricula for the most part do include something on health promotion.

This review summarizes the epidemiological evidence for occupationally acquired tuberculosis and considers the implications for the prevention of tuberculosis. The relevant epidemiological studies were identified on the basis of the Medline data bank, starting with the year 1966. The evaluation of occupational groups with an elevated tuberculosis risk is exclusively based on epidemiologic studies of good or acceptable quality, applying clearly defined criteria of methodological quality. In summary, the available epidemiological evidence suggests that the risk of tuberculosis is elevated in the

Motor and nonmotor symptoms occur in early Parkinson's disease (PD), or even in the prodromal stage. Many of these symptoms can be addressed by allied health therapies, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychological therapies. However, referrals to these services early in the disease are low. We provide a review summarizing the efficacy of proactive allied health interventions on motor and nonmotor symptoms and daily function in prodromal and early disease. We also highlight areas for additional research and provide recommendations to improve care for indiv

RATIONALE: Allied health interventions have been shown to improve impairments and quality of life in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). However, globally allied health is underutilised, and referrals tend to be reactive and occur in moderate to advanced disease. Currently little is known about the referral patterns of PwPD to allied health in Australia.
AIMS: This study examined the allied health referral patterns of neurologists, general practice physicians (GP) and Parkinson's disease nurse specialists (PDNS) treating PwPD in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
METHODS: Four neurologist

BACKGROUND: Hybrid models that integrate both in-person and remote health services are increasingly recognized as a promising approach. Nevertheless, research that defines and characterizes these models in children and young people is scarce and essential for establishing guidelines for implementation of hybrid allied health services. This scoping review evaluates four key aspects of hybrid allied health services in children and young people: 1. definitions, 2. service characteristics, 3. outcome measures, and 4. results of hybrid allied health services.
METHODS: Six databases were searched:

OBJECTIVES: To describe the development and national consensus process underpinning the Rheumatology Occupational Therapy Capabilities Framework. This work addresses the absence of a structured framework defining the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required of the occupational therapy workforce working within rheumatology services managing rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases and the need for a consistent national reference to support practice, workforce planning and professional development.
METHODS: A five-stage mixed methods process was adopted between May 2023 and Septembe

PURPOSE: To determine the availability of allied health care in nursing homes in the Netherlands, and its dependency on characteristics of the nursing home.
METHODS: Structured surveys by telephone were carried out in a sample of 100 from a country total of 286 somatic (for somatic patients only) and combined (with units for both somatic and psychogeriatric patients) nursing homes. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determine relationships between the availability of care and the type of nursing home, its country location (urban/non-urban) and the presence of specific wards

BACKGROUND: Current clinical guidelines recommend that a multidisciplinary team inclusive of allied healthcare practitioners deliver assessment and intervention for disorders of consciousness. Allied health professionals include music, occupational, physical, and speech therapists. These allied health clinicians are challenged to select interventions due to a lack of evidence-based recommendations regarding rehabilitation interventions that support recovery of consciousness. This umbrella review synthesizes available systematic reviews (SRs) that describe occupational, speech and language, phy

INTRODUCTION: There is limited availability of community-based rehabilitation for people with dementia. This study explored stakeholder perspectives to inform the design of an occupational therapy-led at-home dementia rehabilitation programme.
METHODS: Four co-design workshops were conducted over 6 months with 16 participants, including people with dementia, care partners and health-care professionals. Transcribed workshop discussions underwent iterative thematic analysis to inform the final intervention components and philosophical foundations.

AIM: The diagnosis of tongue-tie (or ankyloglossia) has increased more than 10-fold in some countries. Whether this is a global phenomenon or related to cultural and professional differences is uncertain.
METHODS: An online survey in English, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish was disseminated between May and November 2016 via 27 international professional bodies to >30 clinical professions chosen a priori to represent occupations involved in the management of neonatal ankyloglossia.
RESULTS: A total of 1721 responses came from nursing (51%), medical (40%), dental (6%) and allied health (4%) clin

The goal of this study was to describe the roles of health care professionals at small and large worksites in South Africa and to compare them with those of similar professionals in other countries. Questionnaires were mailed to 981 individuals listed as responsible for worksites. Respondents were asked to record number of employees at the worksite and indicate what proportion of time was spent by registered nurses and medical practitioners on each of the specified duties. Medical practitioners spent much less time at worksite health services than nurses. Nurses in small worksites worked a 33.

Under conditions of contemporary highly developed medicine and allied disciplines of the new scientific concept of health care it is essential that doctors and other health workers should be harmoniously developed personalities. One of the main characteristics of such a personality is the overall health potential. Doctors should not only propagate a healthy lifestyle but should in this respect serve as an example. Unfortunately in many instances paradoxical behaviour in relation to their own health is found. The problem of health protection of doctors must be conceived comprehensively not only

BACKGROUND: Resilience can be defined as maintaining or regaining mental health during or after significant adversities such as a potentially traumatising event, challenging life circumstances, a critical life transition or physical illness. Healthcare students, such as medical, nursing, psychology and social work students, are exposed to various study- and work-related stressors, the latter particularly during later phases of health professional education. They are at increased risk of developing symptoms of burnout or mental disorders. This population may benefit from resilience-promoting tr

INTRODUCTION: This study explored clinical educators' perspectives on their supervision experiences, focusing on successes and challenges, including experiences working with allied health students who underperformed or failed practice placements.
METHOD: This study used a convergent mixed-methods design. Universities in Australia and New Zealand (n = 19) that deliver allied health programs (n = 14 professions) were invited to participate. An online questionnaire administered to allied health clinical educators collected quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were analysed descri

BACKGROUND: Disinvestment from inefficient or ineffective health services is a growing priority for health care systems. Provision of allied health services over the weekend is now commonplace despite a relative paucity of evidence supporting their provision. The relatively high cost of providing this service combined with the paucity of evidence supporting its provision makes this a potential candidate for disinvestment so that resources consumed can be used in other areas. This study aims to determine the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and safety of the current model of weekend allied hea

BACKGROUND: Electronic medical records (EMRs) currently rely on standardised data fields to support secondary data use for clinical care, performance monitoring, and system-level reporting. However, utilisation of standardised data capture and reporting within allied health remains underdeveloped in practice. Greater understanding of how allied health clinicians and managers perceive the purpose, value, and impact of standardised data collection is needed to support advancement in data maturity and transformation of utilisation.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the perceived benefits, challenges and fut

OBJECTIVES: Measuring patient health outcomes is important for effective healthcare. Community-based allied health care provides services for people with complex and often deteriorating conditions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if a single outcome measure was applicable across a multidisciplinary team of eight allied health professions to measure the impact of the team. The chosen measure was the EuroQoL, 5-dimension, 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) which we compared to changes in discipline specific functional and quality of life measures.
METHODS: Any adult attending community-based services
