Allium sativum-induced death of African trypanosomes.

The effect of Allium sativum (Liliacea) on trypanosome-infected mice was examined. At a dose of 5.0 mg/ml, the oily extract from the pulp completely suppressed the ability of the parasites to be infective in the host. Column chromatography of the extract gave four fractions: ethylacetate/methanol, ethylacetate/ethanol, benzene/methanol, and acetic acid/methanol. Among these fractions, the acetic acid/methanol fraction retained the trypanocidal features of the crude extract. It cured experimentally infected mice of trypanosomiasis in 4 days when given at a dose of 120 mg/kg per day. The extract

Allium vegetables and stomach cancer risk in China.

Although the incidence of stomach cancer has been declining, it remains the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Potential protective effects of allium vegetables against cancer have been reported by a few epidemiologic studies in Chinese populations, but the sample sizes of these studies were relatively small. We examined the associations between allium vegetable consumption and stomach cancer in a large population-based case-control study in Shanghai (750 cases and 750 age- and gender-matched controls) and Qingdao (201 cases and 201 age- and gender-matched controls). Epidemiologic

Anti-inflammatory steroidal glycosides from Allium chinense G. don.

Phytochemical investigation of the bulbs of Allium chinense G. Don led to the isolation of sixteen steroidal glycosides, including ten previously undescribed compounds (1-3, 8-14). Their chemical structures were determined through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis (1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS), with their absolute configurations further established by quantum chemical NMR calculations and DP4+ statistical analysis. Biological evaluation demonstrated that the isolated steroids significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. Notably, compounds 2 and 9 exh

[Pharmaceutical significance of Allium sativum L. 4. Antifungal effects].

The recent decades saw an increase in the number of systemic fungal diseases and improvements in the identification of their causative agents. There has been an intensive search for new drugs which would be more effective and less toxic than those already in use. From this aspect, attention has been paid also to garlic--its extracts and individual components, i.e., allicin, ajoen, polysulfides, essential oil. New experimental knowledge confirms a significant antifungal activity of sulfurous compounds of garlic. The paper also mentions a possible use of employing garlic extracts or essential oi

Inhibition of Helicobacter pylori by garlic extract (Allium sativum).

The antibacterial effect of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) was investigated against Helicobacter pylori. Sixteen clinical isolates and three reference strains of H. pylori were studied. Two different varieties of garlic were used. The concentration of AGE required to inhibit the bacterial growth was between 2-5 mg ml-1. The concentration, for both AGE types, to inhibit 90% (MIC90) of isolates was 5 mg ml-1. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was usually equal to, or two-fold higher than, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Heat treatment of extracts reduced the inhibitory or bacter
