CLINICAL CASE: A 38-year-old man with fungal Alternaria keratitis was referred from another hospital 25 days after post-traumatic penetrating keratoplastia surgery on his right eye. We commenced treatment with topical voriconazole and the condition resolved.
DISCUSSION: Fungal Alternaria keratitis is rare, and treatment is difficult because the clinical response does not correlate well with the antibiotic in vitro sensitivity of the fungus. Clinical cases need to be diagnosed and treated quickly if visual loss is to be avoided. The combination of topical and systemic voriconazole has been sho

Earlier, it was reported that most of the allergenic activity of Alternaria tenuis seemed to reside in the last Sephadex G-100 fraction (G3, molecular weight approximately 20,000). These conclusions were based on results obtained by the in vitro techniques of radioallergosorbent tests (RAST) and RAST inhibition. In the present studies, the allergenic activity of A. tenuis fractions was measured in vivo. It was found that fraction G3 was neither capable of inducing reaginic (IgE) antibodies in rats nor eliciting a skin reaction in rats sensitized with reagins against A. tenuis non-dialyzable fr

The allergenic potencies of samples of two commercial Alternaria tenuis extracts stored under various conditions were compared at 3 months intervals over a period of 1 year. Aliquots of the extracts at 5.12 mg/ml were maintained in: saline; 50% glycerol-saline mixture; 0.4% phenol-saline; 0.4% phenol-saline containing 0.03% human serum albumin, and samples were also kept in lyophilized form. The samples were stored at -20, 4, 24, 37 and 56 degrees C. Their potency was measured by radioallergosorbent inhibition assay and by mouse IgE passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) tests. The lyophilized ex

PurposeTo report a case of fungal sclerouveitis caused by Alternaria doliconidium, misdiagnosed as autoimmune scleritis and incorrectly treated with immunosuppressive therapy.ObservationsA 69-year-old man presented with progressive chronic necrotizing scleritis in his right eye following ocular trauma. Initial treatment with antimicrobial and steroid therapy showed no improvement, and a scleral biopsy yielded inconclusive results. Autoimmune scleritis was suspected, leading to treatment with systemic steroids and immunosuppressants. Upon further examination, nodular necrotizing scleritis with

We report a case of Alternaria chartarum sclerokeratouveitis with an unfavorable response to treatment. To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous reports of this fungus invading the sclera. A 68-year-old diabetic farmer male patient presented with a 3-week history of pain and redness and a decrease in visual acuity occurring 5 days before admittance in the right eye. Examination revealed severe mixed hyperemia and a scleral calcified plaque with a surrounding area of ischemia and lysis. The cornea showed diffuse infiltrates, stromal edema, and hypopyon. Initial scrapings were negativ

To describe a case of Alternaria keratitis in a 30-year-old male patient who presented with bilateral vascularised central corneal opacity and underwent deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) in the left eye. Patient was treated for recurrent epithelial defect with a bandage contact lens in the follow-up visits after DALK. Subsequently, patient presented with pigmented fungal keratitis, which on culture examination of the corneal scrapping demonstrated Alternaria species. Patient had to undergo a repeat DALK as the keratitis did not resolve with medical therapy alone. Patient did not have

Ginseng Alternaria leaf and stem blight, caused by Alternaria panax, imposes substantial yield and economic losses to the ginseng cultivation industry. Current diagnostic methods for ginseng diseases primarily rely on pathogen isolation from infected tissues, a procedure that is laborious, time-consuming, and inherently low in sensitivity. This study has therefore developed a rapid, specific and sensitive SYBR Green-based quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay for detecting A. panax in plants, seeds, and soil. The developed qPCR assay exhibited high sensitivity and repeatability, with a detec

Forty percent prothioconazole-tebuconazole suspension concentrate(SC) has been registered to control multiple crop diseases in China. This study aims to evaluate its efficacy for the control of Alternaria leaf spot of ginseng, so as to lay the foundation for the management of resistance of Alternaria spp. causing Alternaria leaf spot of ginseng to fungicides. The study first detected its antifungal activity against three species(A. alternata, A. panax, and A. tenuissima) and biochemical activity against A. alternata and then determined its efficacy against Alternaria leaf spot of ginseng in vi

The Alternaria species are dematiaceous fungi. Human infection due to dematiaceous fungi is uncommon. Most reported cases of alternariosis have occurred in patients with immunodeficiency. The majority of cases were solid-organ transplantation recipients. Cutaneous alternariosis lesions are usually asymptomatic solitary nodules, plaques of ulcers or subcutaneous cysts. Here we report a case of a 77-year-old female who presented with hemorrhagic skin necrosis in right arm that had developed from hemorrhagic bullae. Her prior medical history included iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome, hypertension, i

Alternaria species are members of a heterogeneous group of dematiaceous fungi that rarely cause opportunistic infections in transplant recipients. During a 20-year period from 1989 to 2008, 8 solid organ transplant recipients (63% males; median age, 48 years) developed Alternaria species infections at the Mayo Clinic. All patients were highly immunocompromised as evidenced by their receipt of multiple transplants, treatment of acute and chronic allograft rejection, and occurrence of other opportunistic infections. All patients presented with non-tender erythematous or violaceous skin papules,

A case of keratomycosis caused by Alternaria species in a patient with glaucoma is reported. A 55-year-old Japanese man who had been followed for developmental glaucoma presented with corneal ulcer in his right eye, which did not respond to antibacterial agents. There was no history of traumatic episode. Culture on potato dextrose agar from corneal scraping yielded Alternaria species. Topical amphotericin B treatment achieved recovery from ulceration although the corneal opacity remained.

The ability to harvest spore-rich isolates of molds permitted quantitative studies of their role in the pathogenesis of asthma. Alternaria and Penicillium were selected as examples of ubiquitous molds that readily induce IgE antibodies and are of contrasting sizes. Extracts from those spores were prepared for skin tests and aerosol bronchial challenges. Intact spores were used in the same subjects in bronchial challenges delivered by a Spinhaler. Seven patients with a history of mild asthma received a total of 16 bronchial challenges with the mold to which they had been sensitized. Provocative

The chlorophyll deficiency in citrus seedlings known as albinism was induced by inoculating seed with certain clones of Alternaria tenuis, or by germination of the seed in contact with extracts from the fungus. The active material in the extracts apparently has a rather specific inhibiting effect on chlorophyll formation in seedlings of various species.

A case of cutaneous alternariosis with a well-delimited lesion of traumatic origin is described in a renal transplant recipient. On the basis of histopathology the case was first thought to be cryptococcosis, but Alternaria alternata was identified after culturing by means of morphological and molecular examination. Surgical treatment, accompanied by prophylactic application of itraconazole (200 mg day(-1) for 4 weeks), resulted in complete cure.

A 53-year-old woman was found to have an ulcer on her successfully transplanted corneal graft. Many fungal elements were observed in the smear of the ulcerated tissue, and Alternaria alternata was cultured. The ulcer was treated with pimaricin and thimerosol topically, and 5-fluorocytocin (5FC) generally and healed to scar after two months. The ulcer did not invade the host cornea, but remained in the donner cornea in all clinical course. The MIC of five drugs on the isolated strain was following; thimerosal 0.0063, pimaricin 2.0, amphotericin B 3.2, aystatin 6.3 and 5FC 100.0 micrograms/ml ea

Alternaria mycotoxins are secondary fungal metabolites which can contaminate food and feed. They are produced by Alternaria species with alternariol (AOH), alternariol monomethyl ether (AME), tenuazonic acid (TeA), and tentoxin (TEN) as the main representatives for Alternaria mycotoxins in food. Once passing the intestinal barrier, Alternaria toxins can reach the liver to exert yet uncharacterized molecular effects. Therefore, hepatic in vitro systems were used to examine selected Alternaria mycotoxins for their induction of metabolism-dependent cytotoxicity, phosphorylation of the histone H2A

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis is an infrequent infectious condition associated with a high mortality rate. The authors describe a very rare case that occurred in an immunocompetent 18-year-old man who developed severe meningoencephalitis and arachnoiditis caused by Alternaria alternata, which were diagnosed in the context of difficult-to-treat hydrocephalus. Etiological diagnosis was made based on fungal culture and histopathologic examination. Empirical treatment consisted of an early aggressive antifungal combination therapy consisting of intravenous liposomal amphotericin B (5 mg/kg per day) a

BACKGROUND: The actual prevalence of sensitization to Alternaria is not known, partly due to the unreliability of diagnostic extracts.
OBJECTIVE: To assess skin positivity to extracts of Alternaria in a wide population of Italian patients suffering from respiratory symptoms using a biologically standardized extract.
METHODS: A total of 2942 patients were skin prick tested with Alternaria, and a panel of common inhalant allergens. Blood samples for specific IgE quantitation were taken both from patients positive and from patients negative (control group) to Alternaria extract.
RESULTS: Three
