Particle-associated and free-living bacterial communities in an oligotrophic sea are affected by different environmental factors.

In the oceans and seas, environmental conditions change over multiple temporal and spatial scales. Here, we ask what factors affect the bacterial community structure across time, depth and size fraction during six seasonal cruises (2 years) in the ultra-oligotrophic Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The bacterial community varied most between size fractions (free-living (FL) vs. particle-associated), followed by depth and finally season. The FL community was taxonomically richer and more stable than the particle-associated (PA) one, which was characterized by recurrent 'blooms' of heterotrophic bacte

"Push-kill-repel" synergistic antifouling: Coral-inspired polypyrrole/quaternary ammonium molecular brushes via electrochemical layer-by-layer assembly for dynamic biofouling control.

Marine biofouling has long posed a major challenge for marine applications. In this work, inspired by the tentacle-like structures of corals and their remarkable dynamic antifouling capability, a novel "push-kill-repel" polypyrrole/quaternary ammonium molecular brush (PPy/QAS) antifouling system was constructed by electrochemical layer-by-layer assembly. PPy-DBSA was first prepared, followed by voltage-driven grafting of CTAB onto PPy-DBSA, yielding a PPy/CTAB-E system with dynamic coral-like tentacles under cathodic polarization, actively pushing away fouling organisms. Moreover, the inherent

Gastric Microbiota from Populations with High Risk of Gastric Cancer in Nariño, Colombia.

Gastric cancer is a major cause of cancer mortality in Colombia, particularly in the Andean region of Nariño. Helicobacter pylori is the main etiological factor, but its oncogenic potential depends on bacterial variability, host susceptibility, and interactions with the gastric microbiota. This study evaluated the composition and diversity of the gastric microbiota in patients with preneoplastic lesions. Gastric biopsies from 30 patients (24 with non-atrophic gastritis (NAG); 6 with atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia (AGIM)) were analyzed by full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing using

The Trichodesmium consortium: conserved heterotrophic co-occurrence and genomic signatures of potential interactions.

The nitrogen (N)-fixing cyanobacterium Trichodesmium is globally distributed in warm, oligotrophic oceans, where it contributes a substantial proportion of new N and fuels primary production. These photoautotrophs form macroscopic colonies that serve as relatively nutrient-rich substrates that are colonized by many other organisms. The nature of these associations may modulate ocean N and carbon (C) cycling, and can offer insights into marine co-evolutionary mechanisms. Here we integrate multiple omics-based and experimental approaches to investigate Trichodesmium-associated bacterial consorti

Skin microbiome mirrors habitat divergence in amphibious combtooth blenny fish (Teleostei, Blenniidae).

Host-associated microbiomes play vital roles in species' ecology and evolution, yet little is known about their shift during the transition from aquatic to terrestrial habitats. We characterize the skin microbiomes of three combtooth blenny species (Blenniella paula, Praealticus labrovittatus, Alticus arnoldorum) that occupy distinct positions along the intertidal gradient-from fully subtidal to intertidal and supratidal environments. Using 16S rRNA sequencing, we compared skin-associated bacterial communities with those in seawater and substrate biofilms. The divergence between skin and subst

Unlocking Marine Microbial Metabolites of Sponges and Sediments as a Source of Anti-Trypanosoma cruzi Compounds.

Marine microbial metabolites have long served as valuable sources for drug discovery, exhibiting diverse biological activities, including antiparasitic, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects. Chagas disease (CD), a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, affects approximately 8 million people worldwide. Currently, only two drugs are available for treatment, both associated with significant toxicity, underscoring the urgent need for new therapeutic alternatives. In this context, and considering the remarkable chemical diversity of marine bacteria, the present study investigated t

Innovative CuO-melanin hybrid nanoparticles and polytetrafluoroethylene for enhanced antifouling coatings.

Based on current research, a highly effective, completely biocompatible, and eco-friendly antifouling method was developed. Sepia pharaonis was used to synthesize melanin nanoparticles from its ink. To improve the anti-biofouling characteristics, CuO nanoparticles were synthesized from Padina sp., and a CuO-melanin hybrid nanoparticle complex was created under reflux. The XRD spectrum of the hybrid nanoparticles revealed several prominent peaks, indicating the crystalline structure of the nanoparticles. An EDS analysis identified copper, carbon, and oxygen in the hybrid nanoparticles. Accordin

Evaluation of antifouling activity of eight commercially available organic chemicals against the early foulers marine bacteria and Ulva spores.

Environmental impacts caused by tin and copper based commercial antifouling (AF) paints were proved to be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, a search of environmental friendly AF compounds to be used in marine paint to protect the surface of maritime developmental structures from the unwanted biofouling is a burning issue of the present time. Commercially available eight organic chemicals--allyl isothiocyanate, beta-myrecene, cis-3-hexenyl acetate, citral, ethyl heptanoate, eugenol, methyl caproate, and octyl alcohol were evaluated forAF activities using both laboratory and field as

Antifouling Lipids from Marine Fungi of the Beibu Gulf.

Background: The search for environmentally friendly antifouling agents has led to an increased focus on marine natural products. Methods: This study investigated the antifouling potential of lipid fractions extracted from ten marine fungal strains isolated from the Beibu Gulf, China. The lipids were evaluated through a multi-level bioassay approach, including the inhibition of microfouling (against four fouling bacteria: Marinobacterium jannaschii, Vibrio pelagius, Vibrio rotiferianus, and Alteromonas macleodii), the prevention of macrofouling (inhibition of barnacle Amphibalanus reticulatus c

Barcoded sequencing reveals diverse intrauterine microbiomes in patients suffering with endometrial polyps.

Results of this study showed that the bacterial composition in vagina (V) greatly differed from intrauterine microbiome (I). Microbiomes were present in all intrauterine samples of healthy women (Group H (I)) and patients with endometrial polyps (EP) (including Group EP (I) and Group EP/chronic endometritis (CE) (I)). Indeed, the intrauterine bacteria population in Group EP/CE (I) were more diverse than those in Groups EP (I) and H (I). The result also confirmed the bacterial composition differences between vagina and uterus as well as the intrauterine microbiome alteration in the patients, co

Energy coupling to K+ transport in a marine bacterium.

Cells of the marine bacterium Alteromonas haloplanktis 214 ATCC 19855 (previously referred to as marine pseudomonad B-16) were depleted of K+ by washing with 0.1 M MgSO4. Washing with 0.05 M MgSO4 lowered the Vmax for K+ transport compared with washing with 0.1 M with 0.05 but did not change the Km, while washing with lower concentrations of MgSO4 caused loss of ultraviolet-absorbing material from the cells. K+ uptake was a strictly aerobic process and was accompanied by proton release. When an anaerobic suspension of cells was added to incubation mixtures containing increasing amounts of O2,

Metagenomic characterization of bacterial communities on beach macroplastics: Insights into antimicrobial resistance and virulence.

Macroplastic debris in coastal environments provides stable substrates for microbial colonization, yet comparative assessments with natural substrates remain limited. This study investigated bacterial communities associated with beach macroplastics collected from four sites along the Kochi coast, Kerala, India (Fort Kochi, Cherai, Puthenthode, and Puthuvypin) during the pre-monsoon season, and compared them with those colonizing natural inanimate substrates (driftwood, seaweed, and shells). Composite sampling across multiple transects was employed, and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used t

Deep sequencing approach for investigating infectious agents causing fever.

Acute undifferentiated fever (AUF) poses a diagnostic challenge due to the variety of possible aetiologies. While the majority of AUFs resolve spontaneously, some cases become prolonged and cause significant morbidity and mortality, necessitating improved diagnostic methods. This study evaluated the utility of deep sequencing in fever investigation. DNA and RNA were isolated from plasma/sera of AUF cases being investigated at Cairns Hospital in northern Australia, including eight control samples from patients with a confirmed diagnosis. Following isolation, DNA and RNA were bulk amplified and

Sequence-Based Characterization of Microalgal Microbiomes: Impact of DNA Extraction Protocol on Yield and Community Composition.

The bacterial communities associated with microalgae are vital for the growth and health of the host, and engineering algal microbiomes can enhance the fitness of the algae. Characterization of these microbiomes mostly relies on sequencing of DNA, which can be extracted with an array of protocols that potentially impact DNA quantity and quality and thus potentially affect subsequent analyses of microbiome composition. Here, we extracted DNA from Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica, and Conticribra weissflogii microbiomes using four different protocols. DNA yield and quality was greatly imp

Chemical prophage induction selectively removes Vibrio from a pelagic Sargassum-derived multispecies biofilm.

BACKGROUND: Pelagic Sargassum has undergone significant range expansion and dramatic blooms in the Atlantic over the past 15 years. This alga's microbiome provides symbiotic functions that are believed to contribute to its ecological success. Recent research shows that Sargassum-associated bacteria are enriched in integrated prophages compared to the surrounding seawater and that these prophages are inducible by chemical and ultraviolet treatment. RESULTS: Here, we investigated a Sargassum-derived in vitro multispecies biofilm encompassing the dominant heterotrophic microbial members associat

Dependence of the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus on hydrogen peroxide scavenging microbes for growth at the ocean's surface.

The phytoplankton community in the oligotrophic open ocean is numerically dominated by the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus, accounting for approximately half of all photosynthesis. In the illuminated euphotic zone where Prochlorococcus grows, reactive oxygen species are continuously generated via photochemical reactions with dissolved organic matter. However, Prochlorococcus genomes lack catalase and additional protective mechanisms common in other aerobes, and this genus is highly susceptible to oxidative damage from hydrogen peroxide (HOOH). In this study we showed that the extant microbial c

In vitro activity of BMS-181139, a new carbapenem with potent antipseudomonal activity.

The in vitro activities of the carbapenem BMS-181139 were determined in comparison with those of imipenem, meropenem, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, and vancomycin. BMS-181139 was the most active against species of Pseudomonas and related genera Alteromonas and Burkholderia, with MICs for 147 of 149 isolates of < 4 micrograms/ml. Of 22 imipenem-resistant (MIC > 8 micrograms/ml) P. aeruginosa strains, only 1 required an MIC of BMS-181139 of > 4 micrograms/ml, compared with 14 requiring the same meropenem MIC. Community Structure of Protease-Producing Bacteria Cultivated From Aquaculture Systems: Potential Impact of a Tropical Environment.

Protease-producing bacteria play vital roles in degrading organic matter of aquaculture system, while the knowledge of diversity and bacterial community structure of protease-producing bacteria is limited in this system, especially in the tropical region. Herein, 1,179 cultivable protease-producing bacterial strains that belonged to Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were isolated from tropical aquaculture systems, of which the most abundant genus was Bacillus, followed by Vibrio. The diversity and relative abundance of protease-producing bacteria in sediment were generally higher
