Ivy leaf is used for the treatment of respiratory diseases with the intensive mucus formation, respiratory infections, and irritating cough coming from the common cold. Conferring to clinical trials, the efficacy, and tolerability of ivy leaf is good. The main compounds accountable for biological activity are triterpene and saponins. Ivy leaves show convulsive/antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, anthelmintic and anti-thrombin activity. Not only ivy but also marshmallow and mustard seeds are used for these indications. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy an

OBJECTIVES: The creation of a new valid preclinical model of articular pain by the intra-articular (i.a.) injection of mucilages for the screening of new treatments against arthritis.
METHODS: A single intra-articular injection (20 μl) of mucilages (from Althaea officinalis roots and Linum usitatissimun seeds) or vegetal components (Amorphophallus konjac gum powder and β-glucan, used as reference standard) were assessed in the rat. The pathology progression was monitored by behavioural measurements (paw pressure test, von Frey test, incapacitance test and beam balance test) and compared to th

We developed a new inhalation exposure method to evaluate effects of synthetic cannabimimetics that are being distributed as new, unregulated drugs in the Tokyo area. We selected the commercial product "SOUTOU" containing AB-CHMINACA and 5F-AMB as the test drug and dried marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) leaves as the negative control. A half cigarette packed with dried marshmallow leaves or SOUTOU was ignited, then mainstream smoke from each was delivered to five mice in an exposure box. After the cigarettes were fully consumed, neurobehavioral observations and a catalepsy test were performed

This review highlights the potential of aromatic plants as natural antioxidants in cosmeceuticals to combat skin aging and promote health and rejuvenation. Aromatic plant extracts, essential oils, or their phytoconstituents have a long history of use in skincare, dating back centuries. Currently, these plant-based sources are extensively researched and utilized in the cosmeceutical industry to formulate products that enhance skin health and promote a youthful appearance. These plants' diverse bioactivities and sensory properties make them ideal ingredients for developing anti-aging agents reco

Background: The use of plant-derived agents is a common approach in integrative care for respiratory conditions. However, the evidence of clinical trials has not yet been comprehensively presented. Aim: To summarize the antibacterial, antiviral, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and expectorant properties of Echinacea spp., Pelargonium sidoides, Hedera helix, Thymus vulgaris, Althaea officinalis, Sambucus nigra, Zingiber officinale, and Curcuma longa, and to evaluate the evidence level from clinical trials (CTs) involving these agents in patients with respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Methods:

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Natural products derived from herbal medicine have been extensively researched in the alternative treatment of various inflammatory diseases including periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to analyze the scientometric characteristics of herbal medicine in periodontics research with emphasis on the identification of the herbaceous agents.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All the articles on herbal medicine in periodontics research were comprehensively retrieved from the Scopus database. The common herbaceous agents for periodontal disease were identified from the top-100 most-

This study explored the eco-friendly synthesis, characterization, optimization, and biomedical potential of zinc oxide-eggshell (ZnO@ES) nanocomposites using Althaea officinalis flower extract. HPLC analysis identified pink flower extract as the highest in quercetin (88.452 ppm), making it the optimal choice for synthesis. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirmed ZnO nanostructures (384 nm peak), while characterization analyses using different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques validated their successful incorporation within the eggshell matrix. The hemocompatibility of ZnO@ES nanocomposites was as

OBJECTIVE: Asthma is an increasing chronic respiratory disease affecting over 300 million people worldwide. Several studies have shown that herbal remedies may improve asthma control and reduce asthma symptoms. In this study, the effects of short-course administration of an herbal mixture (ASMATUSTM) in asthmatic children during viral respiratory tract infection, were evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six children (7-12 years old) with intermittent asthma were enrolled in this double-blind randomized clinical trial. At the onset of common cold symptoms, the patients were randomly assign

Synthetic anthelmintic drugs not only contribute to the development of pathogen resistance and environmental pollution but also to the development of pathogen resistance. Therefore, identifying the anthelmintic properties of widely used medicinal plants could be of great practical interest to veterinary and human medicine. In our experiment, we evaluated the in vitro survivability of the noninvasive and invasive (L1-2 and L3, respectively) larvae of Strongyloides papillosus and Haemonchus contortus subject to aqueous solutions of ethanolic tinctures of traditional medicinal plants (46 species)

Background/Objectives: Diabetic mouth ulcers are a pathological condition of the oral mucosa leading to increases in susceptibility to infection and prolonged wound healing time. Still, there is a lack of natural formulations for treating this condition. Our principal objective was to formulate solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) that contained Althaea officinalis (marshmallow) (M.) extract with clove oil (CO.), subsequently integrated into a collagen sponge for enhancing stability, solubility, sustained release, antimicrobial efficacy, and healing power when targeting diabetic oral ulcers. BACKGROUND: The use of medicinal plants is an option for livestock farmers who are not allowed to use allopathic drugs under certified organic programs or cannot afford to use allopathic drugs for minor health problems of livestock.
METHODS: In 2003 we conducted semi-structured interviews with 60 participants obtained using a purposive sample. Medicinal plants are used to treat a range of conditions. A draft manual prepared from the data was then evaluated by participants at a participatory workshop.
RESULTS: There are 128 plants used for ruminant health and diets, representing several plant

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania species and transmitted through sand fly bites, affecting some of the most vulnerable populations globally. Current treatments are limited by high toxicity, poor tolerability, and resistance. Plant-based therapies offer a promising alternative, but human evidence has not been comprehensively reviewed. This review summarizes current evidence on the efficacy and safety of plant-based treatments for leishmaniasis in humans.
METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic review including studies that evaluated the efficacy and
