Alveolar ridge augmentation using titanium micromesh: an experimental study in dogs.

PURPOSE: Augmentation of the alveolar ridge before implant placement is frequently performed. The purpose of this study was to compare the amount and quality of bone formation under Micro Titanium Augmentation Mesh (M-TAM) when used alone for guided tissue regeneration or in combination with a porous hydroxyapatite (HA) bone graft substitute. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine adult female dogs underwent extraction of premolars and molars and had a knife-edge ridge created. Three months later, the ridges were augmented with either M-TAM alone or M-TAM with a nonresorbable porous HA (Interpore 200; I

Oral Rehabilitation of Severely Atrophic Alveolar Ridge Using Sinus Augmentation and Ridge Split Technique: A Case Report.

Dental implant placement requires adequate bone volume. Sinus augmentation and ridge split technique enhance bone volume in a severely atrophied alveolar ridge. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a patient with severe posterior maxillary atrophy (residual bone height <2.5 mm) and a knife-edge posterior mandibular ridge using lateral sinus floor elevation and ridge split technique, respectively, followed by implant placement. Given the limited high-level evidence on the combined management of these complex anatomical deficiencies and their long-term implant outcomes, this report h

Alveolar ridge augmentation by distraction osteogenesis using titanium implants: an experimental study.

The left mandibular premolars were extracted from five adult dogs. After twelve weeks, a box-shaped osteotomy of the alveolar bone was carried out and two 10 mm implants were placed 5 mm into the transport alveolar segment, leaving 5 mm exposed. The alveolar bone was vertically augmented 5 mm by screwing the implants. After distraction, the implants were left to integrate into the bone. Histological and radiographical evaluations showed the lifting of the transport segment and the development of new bone in the distraction area. Although integration of implants within both the transport segmen

Additive Manufacturing for Guided Bone Regeneration: A Perspective for Alveolar Ridge Augmentation.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become an important tool in the field of tissue engineering and its further development will lead to completely new clinical possibilities. The ability to create tissue scaffolds with controllable characteristics, such as internal architecture, porosity, and interconnectivity make it highly desirable in comparison to conventional techniques, which lack a defined structure and repeatability between scaffolds. Furthermore, 3D printing allows for the production of scaffolds with patient-specific dimensions using computer-aided design. The availability of commer

Alternative to the gold standard for alveolar ridge augmentation: tenting screw technology.

Studies have discussed the potential issues associated with the placement of implants in unfavorable locations. Today, it is possible to optimize implant placement despite the significant ridge resorption that often occurs after tooth extraction. This objective is achievable because techniques exist to augment resorbed alveolar ridges to prerequisite widths and heights for proper implant position. A group of surgical procedures have evolved that are considered to be the gold standard for achieving alveolar ridge width and height augmentation. This article discusses the purported gold standard

Maxillary alveolar ridge augmentation with onlay bone-grafts and immediate endosseous implants.

Management of the atrophic maxilla can be a taxing surgical problems. One treatment alternative is to use autogenous bone transplants and immediate titanium fixture implantation. Despite the extensive literature on routine implant treatment of the edentulous jaws, only very few reports have dealt with the outcome of bone graft reconstructive surgery as part of the dental implant restoration. This study presents the treatment and healing results of 8 consecutive patients, who, over a period of 2 years and 8 months, were treated using onlay iliac bone grafts to atrophic maxillary alveolar ridges

Maxillary alveolar bone ridge width augmentation using the frame-shaped corticotomy expansion technique.

Maxillary alveolar ridge expansion performed by intercortical bone splitting is a seducing alternative surgical procedure for alveolar bone widening. The aim of this technique is to gain enough bone width to be able to place a dental implant simultaneously. This technique avoids a second surgical site for bone graft harvesting. However there are risks of surgical failure caused by unintended bone fracture during expansion and implant placement, or by insufficient bone widening for implant insertion. To limit these risks, we have published expansion techniques using various corticotomies. These

Surgical success of intraoral autogenous block onlay bone grafting for alveolar ridge augmentation.

This article evaluates the surgical success of alveolar bone augmentation using intraoral block bone graft prior to dental implantation and measures the amount of bone accumulation using this technique. A consecutive retrospective study was conducted on patients who had onlay bone grafts from 1999 to 2001. Files of 56 healthy patients reporting 64 bone graft operations were reviewed. Medical history, smoking status, area of surgery, bone origin (donor sites) and complications were recorded. Panoramic and tomographic radiographs were measured for the vertical and horizontal bone addition and me

[Sandwich osteotomy--a biologic method for vertical augmentation of edentulous alveolar ridges].

Vertical augmentation for rehabilitation with dental implants poses a clinical challenge. The surgical obstacles have been extensively documented within the literature. Outcomes of the multiple methods available are not predictable, and overall success rates are sub-optimal. This paper presents the Sandwich Osteotomy Technique (interpositional rhBMP-2 and bone subtitute grafting) in a young female with congenital oligodontia. The uniqueness of this method, like in distraction osteogenesis, is that the segmental bone remains attached to the mucoperiosteal flap and thus the blood supply is maint

Evaluation of collagen/hydroxylapatite for augmenting deficient alveolar ridges: a preliminary report.

A multicenter study was undertaken to evaluate a new alveolar ridge augmentation material composed of purified fibrillar collagen and particulate hydroxylapatite (PFC/HA). In a study of 77 patients and 99 reconstructed ridges, this material provided superior handling properties over HA alone as evidenced by its ease of surgical placement and manipulation, and the rarity of particle migration or displacement. Moreover, the rapid development of ridge firmness and stability allowed for the loading of dentures within three to six weeks. Prosthodontist evaluations and surveys of patient satisfactio
