A study was performed on the hepatic reaction of mice to acute intoxication with virotoxins (alaviroidin, viroisin, deoxoviroisin, viroidin, deoxoviroidin) and phalloidin, cyclic peptides isolated from Amanita virosa mushrooms. Purified fractions were administered intraperitoneally at various dosages to determine the LD50 which ranged from 1.0 to 5.3 mg/kg, with viroidin, phalloidin, and viroisin being the most potent. The virotoxins and phalloidin induced hemorrhagic necrosis of the liver. The development of hepatic lesions was followed by enhanced serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activit

BACKGROUND: Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) is a poisonous mushroom containing ibotenic acid (IBA) and muscimol (MUS), two neuroactive alkaloids capable of causing severe or fatal intoxication. While human poisoning is well documented, information on fatal intoxication in birds is limited. This report presents the first documented case of fatal poisoning of Old Polish ducks following ingestion of A. muscaria, confirmed by anatomopathological and toxicological analyses. METHODS: Post-mortem specimens, including blood, heart, brain, kidney, liver, lung, pectoral and femoral muscles, and gastrointe

BACKGROUND: Amanita poisoning causes 90%-95% of global mushroom-related deaths, yet early prognostic biomarkers for Amanita poisoning are lacking.
METHODS: 33 patients with Amanita poisoning were recruited and categorized into survival and death group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the independent mortality risk factors for Amanita poisoning patients. Untargeted serum metabolomics was performed to screen the differentially expressed metabolites. The quality control samples were used to evaluate the stability and reproducibility of ultra performance liquid c

Amanita phalloides is well-established as one of the most poisonous mushrooms; toxicity from ingestion was reported as early as the first century. Although native to Europe, this ectomycorrhizal fungus has been widely spread and is responsible for liver toxicity in many parts of the world. Toxicity is characterized by delayed gastrointestinal symptoms mimicking acute gastroenteritis followed by severe hepatotoxicity and liver failure with consequent multi-organ failure. The primary mechanism of liver toxicity is considered to be the inhibition of RNA polymerase II with consequent hepatocyte ap

We report here three cases of Amanita virosa induced toxic hepatitis. Two of the three cases recovered but the other died 10 days after mushroom ingestion. Since the mortality of Amanita mushroom induced toxic hepatitis is very high, prompt diagnosis and aggressive therapeutic measures should be initiated as soon as possible. Our cases showed that the initial serum aminotransferase levels might not predict the clinical outcome of the patient, but that the prothrombin time (PT) seemed to be a more useful prognostic marker. Close monitoring of aminotransferase levels and PT as well as appropriat

We present the case of a married couple intoxicated by mushrooms of the Amanita genus, developing acute toxic hepatitis. The man progressed to severe hepatitis with coagulopathy, requiring Intensive Care Unit admission and plasmapheresis, while the woman had a favorable evolution. Both received treatment with N-acetylcysteine and silymarin, resolving the condition without the need for a transplant. Early diagnosis of this condition and appropriate management are essential to prevent fatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Current treatment of amatoxin poisoning includes the administration of silibinin and penicillin in combination or silibinin alone. The aim of this study was to compare both therapeutic regimes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 604 patients with the suspected diagnosis of amatoxin poisoning 367 were retrospectively analysed: 118 patients had received silibinin alone and 249 patients silibinin in combination with penicillin. Logistic regression analyses were applied to investigate the efficacy of both therapeutic regimens by comparing death and liver transplantation rates. A potent

The constituents of seven mushrooms sold as Amanita muscaria or Amanita pantherina (five A. muscaria and two A. pantherina) and four "extracts purported to contain A. muscaria" products that are currently circulated in Japan were determined. All mushroom samples were identified as A. muscaria or A. pantherina by macroscopic and microscopic observation. The dissociative constituents, ibotenic acid (IBO) and muscimol (MUS), were extracted with 70% methanol twice and determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The IBO (as the hydrate)/MUS contents were in the range of <10-2845ppm/46-1052p

We report four episodes of mushroom poisoning that occurred between 1986 and 1990 in the province of Malleco. Twenty five of 36 individuals who ingested the mushroom became ill; they had an acute gastroenteritis that was followed in 7 by an acute hepatitis and in one by a massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Three subjects with fulminant hepatic failure and the subject with the massive bleeding died. Amanita gemmate (strain described as toxic in Chile since 1967) was found in two episodes and Amanita sp in one. The clinical picture is similar to that described for Amanita phaloides. The tr

An analysis of patients with mushroom poisoning hospitalized in the Clinic of Toxicology in Cracow revealed that only a small percentage of cases had been caused by the death cap Amanita phalloides (Vaill. ex Fr.) Secr. The most important factors contributing to intoxication are confusion of toxic mushrooms with edible species, and non-specific mushroom poisoning. The genus Amanita has a global distribution and is one of the most well-known genera of macrofungi. Active toxins present in the panther cap (A. pantherina) (DC ex Fr.) Secr are ibotenic acid and muscimol, which are rapidly absorbed

Gathering and eating mushrooms and other plants containing psychoactive substances has become increasingly popular among young people experimenting with drugs. Dried fly agaric Amanita muscaria fruiting bodies were eaten by five young persons (18-21 years of age) at a party in order to evoke hallucinations. Visual and auditory hallucinations occurred in four of them, whereas a 18-year-old girl lost consciousness. The following morning, she went to the Clinic of Toxicology. Due to the fact that not all the active substances present in the fly agaric have been identified, and some of them have a

Mistakenly picking and eating poisonous mushrooms can cause acute poisoning. In August 2020, Qingdao Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine handled a poisonous mushroom poisoning incident, conducted epidemiological investigation on all poisoned patients, collected suspicious food, clinical manifestations, clinical test results and treatment conditions, and identified the mushrooms as Amanita fuliginea poisoning after morphological identification. In this incident, 6 people ate grey goose paste, of which 4 were sick with a incubation period of 6~12 h. The clinical manifestations were gastroin

This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the antioxidant, anticholinesterase, and antiproliferative activities of the edible mushroom Amanita ovoidea, along with its phenolic compound profile. Ethanolic mushroom extracts were subjected to a series of biological activity assays. Antioxidant capacity was assessed using the TAS, TOS, DPPH, and FRAP methods, and the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated accordingly, revealing the species' potential to shift the redox balance in favor of antioxidants. Anticholinesterase activity was determined using the Ellman method and compared

INTRODUCTION: Amanita phalloides poisoning is a serious health problem with a mortality rate of 10-40%. Poisonings are characterized by severe liver and kidney toxicity. The effect of Amanita phalloides poisonings on hematological parameters has not been systematically evaluated thus far.
METHODS: Patients with suspected Amanita phalloides poisonings were retrospectively selected from the hospital database of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Medical data-including demographics; liver, kidney, and blood parameters; treatment; and outcomes-were collected. The severity of the pois

The genus Amanita contains approximately 600 species of mushrooms, including some that produce amatoxins, which can lead to liver failure and death when ingested. Poisonous mushrooms often resemble and are difficult to distinguish visually from nonpoisonous, edible mushrooms. After above-average late November 2025 rainfall in California, regional mycologists observed numerous Amanita mushroom blooms in regional parks and area wildlands. On November 18, 2025, specialists at the San Francisco division of the California Poison Control System (CPCS) suspected amatoxin-containing mushroom poisoning

Amanita pantherina poisoning is a rare event poorly described. The clinical picture is usually associated with the one of A. muscaria, but A. pantherina contains more muscimol causing more often coma. We describe a case of severe coma and seizures after A. pantherina ingestion. A woman of 56 years old was found at home unresponsive with miosis, clonic movements of four limbs, normal respiratory and cardiovascular functions and without cerebral ischemic symptoms. Her husband reported mushrooms ingestion 4 hours earlier that were picked up in the home garden and believed to be Macrolepiota proce
