The alligator weed flea beetle, Agasicles hygrophila Selman & Vogt (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) has been used very successfully for the biological control of the widely-distributed invasive weed Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb (Caryophyllales: Amaranthaceae). In order to extend the 'shelf life' of natural enemies released in biological control programs, cold storage has proven to be a valuable commercial procedure. To determine a suitable low temperature for storage of A. hygrophila, we conducted short-term cold storage treatments of eggs (4°C for 0.5, 1, 2, 5 d, and 7.5, 10, 15°C fo

Airborne pollen is considered one of the causative agents of hay fever, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. We aimed to investigate airborne pollens in the context of Shiraz located in the southwest of Iran and find their association with meteorological parameters. The survey was conducted from October 2017 to September 2018, using seven days of volumetric Burkard spore trap, located in the center of the city. A total of 5810 pollen grains/m3 belonging to 15 taxa were identified and recorded. Among them, 73.8% was the tree, while the grass, shrub, and weed constituted 13.56%, 3.5%,

Bolting time is critical for yield stability in spinach, a long-day Amaranthaceae crop whose photoperiod-dependent flowering pathway remains incompletely understood. We generated a chromosome-scale reference genome for an early-bolting spinach line (944.6 Mb; 97.9% BUSCO completeness) and used it to integrate QTL mapping, sequence variation, and transcriptome-based co-expression analysis. Remapping bolting-time QTLs on this improved reference retained qBt2.1, qBt3.1, and qBt3.2, while refining their physical intervals and candidate gene content. Candidate loci included SoCOL14/SoFL1 at qBt2.1,

The impact of invasive species on native biodiversity varies across environments, with invasion effects of amphibious plant species across terrestrial and aquatic systems especially poorly understood. In this study, we established 29 terrestrial plots and 23 aquatic plots which were invaded by the alien plant alligator weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides in Southern China. We measured α-species diversity (Shannon-Wiener and Simpson index), species richness and evenness, species cover and the importance value (a comprehensive index of cover, height and abundance) of A. philoxeroides in invaded co

Two new triterpenoid saponins celosin I (1) and celosin II (2) were isolated from the seeds of Celosia argentea L. (Amaranthaceae). The structures of the two new compounds were elucidated based on chemical analysis and spectral methods (IR, 1-D and 2-D NMR, ESI-MS, HR-ESI-MS). They exhibited significant hepatoprotective effect on carbon tetrachloride-induced and N,N-dimethylformamide-induced hepatotoxicity in mice.

The species Alternanthera brasiliana (L.) Kuntze (Amaranthaceae) is a perennial herbaceous plant widely distributed in Brazil's eastern beaches and certain Amazonian regions. Crude ethanolic (70%) extract, fractions (dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and n-butanolic) and the mixture isolated were investigated regarding their content of total phenolic compounds by Folin-Ciocalteau assay. Total phenolic contents varied from 29.0 to 56.6 mg/g (dry fraction). The scavenging capacity of the extract, fractions and mixture isolated was characterised by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl method. Only ethy

Agasicles hygrophila is a classical biological agent used to control alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides). Previous research has indicated that the heat shock factor (HSF) is involved in regulating the transcriptional expression of Hsp70 in response to heat resistance in A. hygrophila. However, the regulatory mechanism by which AhHsf regulates the expression of AhHsp70 remains largely unknown. Here, we identified and cloned a 944 bp AhHsp70 promoter (AhHsp70p) region from A. hygrophila. Subsequent bioinformatics analysis revealed that the AhHsp70p sequence contains multiple functional

Biological invasions are one of the major threats to biodiversity at the global scale, causing numerous environmental impacts and having high direct and indirect costs associated with their management, control and eradication. In this work, we present a system-dynamic modelling approach for the biocontrol of the invasive plant species Alternanthera philoxeroides using its natural predator, Agasicles hygrophila, as a biocontrol agent. We have simulated different scenarios in the Finisterre region (Spain), where a single population of the invasive plant has been recently described. To assess the

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Weeds are often considered undesirable as they interfere with the habitat of native plants, and therefore they are underestimated and underutilised. In fact, some edible weeds have beneficial nutritional and medicinal values. Alternanthera sessilis (L.) R. Br. ex DC., an edible medicinal weed is a species of the Amaranthaceae family that consists of two cultivars: green and red. Local communities in different regions have traditionally consumed the plants as food and medicine, with the green cultivar being applied to relieve pain, treat wound healing, dysentery,

Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb., commonly known as "Alligator weed" in English, and "Malancha" in Bengali, is a leafy vegetable from the family Amaranthaceae A. L. de Jussieu. This species is native to China, particularly to the provinces around the Yangtze River, other Far East and South-East Asian countries, and countries from other continents (e.g., South America). This plant also grows in certain areas in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. While in Bangladesh the leaves of this plant are consumed as a vegetable, in China, this plant has been used widely as a traditional remed
