Chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera and Ischnocera) from wild birds in southern Vietnam, with descriptions of two new species.

A total of 239 individuals of 50 bird species were examined for chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) in southern Vietnam. Fifty-six birds of 20 species were parasitised by 15 species of lice belonging to 10 genera from two suborders, Amblycera: Menacanthus, Meromenopon, Myrsidea, and Ischnocera: Alcedoecus, Brueelia, Cuculicola, Meropoecus, Penenirmus, Philopteroides and Philopterus. Thirteen louse samples from Passeriformes were identified to genus only because they contain inadequate material. A total of 29 host-louse associations were found, of which nine are new, including: (1) two new spe

New records of chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) from Egyptian pigeons and doves (Columbiformes), with description of one new species.

Little information is available about the chewing lice of wild birds of Egypt, including common groups such as pigeons and doves (Columbiformes). Through this work, parasitic chewing lice of common columbiformes of Egypt were revised including new data. Three species of pigeons and doves (Streptopelia decaocto Frivaldszky 1838, Spilopelia senegalensis Linnaeus 1766 and Columba livia Gmelin 1789) were examined for chewing lice at three different localities. A total of 124 specimens of lice were collected. Nine species were identified from these samples; one species (Columbicola joudiae n. sp.)

First molecular detection of Bartonella spp. in two chewing louse species (Amblycera: Menoponidae and Ischnocera: Philopteridae) parasitizing Calonectris borealis (Cory, 1881) (Procellariiformes: Procellariidae).

Procellariidae is the most diverse family of the order Procellariiformes, with 13 genera and about 90 species of seabirds. The genus Calonectris is represented by three species in the Atlantic Ocean. Bartonella spp. is a globally distributed bacterium primarily affecting mammals, with transmission through hematophagous arthropod vectors. Recent studies have found Bartonella in non-mammals like birds and turtles, prompting the present study to explore the potential role of chewing lice in its transmission. Here, we report two different Bartonella genotypes in each lice species identified: one s

Two new records of chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera) from the Oriental honey buzzard [Pernis ptilorhynchus (Temminck, 1821)] and house crow (Corvus splendens Viellot, 1817) in Malaysia.

We report two new records of chewing lice from avian pets in Peninsular Malaysia: Colpocephalum apivorus Tendeiro, 1958 from an Oriental honey buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus (Temminck, 1821)), and Myrsidea splendenticola Klockenhoff, 1973 from an albino house crow (Corvus splendens Vieillot, 1817). The scarcity of louse records from avian pets and wild birds, and the lack of louse research in Malaysia are discussed.

Phylogeny and classification, origins, and evolution of host associations of lice.

Lice are highly successful ectoparasites. Most species of mammals and birds are infested by at least 1 but up to 6 species of lice. Current opinion is that lice evolved from free-living Psocoptera (booklice, barklice and psocids). It is generally agreed that there are 4 main groups of lice: Anoplura, Amblycera, Ischnocera and Rhyncophthirina. In contrast, there is no agreement on the phylogenetic relationships of these groups and their classification. In particular, there is much debate over the validity of the taxon Mallophaga, which is almost certainly paraphyletic. For many years the sister

Stem chewing lice on Cretaceous feathers preserved in amber.

Phthirapteran lice (true lice or parasitic lice) are a major group of ectoparasitic insects living on their bird or mammal hosts during their entire life cycle.1 Due to their highly specialized lifestyles, they are extremely poorly represented in fossil records.2 Molecular clock estimations have speculated extensively about the origin time of parasitic lice,3,4 yet none have been confirmed unequivocally. Herein, we report a new family of stem chewing lice, based on two adult insects associated with several semiplume feathers preserved within a piece of Kachin amber from the mid-Cretaceous. The

Chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) associated with vertebrates in Mexico.

The chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Amblycera and Ischnocera) of Mexico have been little studied and many publications include isolated records. This paper summarizes current knowledge of chewing lice recorded from Mexico resulting from an exhaustive search of the literature published from 1866 to 2017. We found 342 louse species associated with 206 bird and 28 mammal species. As a result, we provide a checklist of the chewing lice recorded from Mexico, including a host-parasite list and their geographical distribution within the country.

Chewing lice in Azorean Blackcaps ( Sylvia atricapilla ): a contribution to parasite island syndromes.

Focusing upon chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) parasitizing blackcaps ( Sylvia atricapilla ) in the Azores (Portugal), we found a lower number of louse species in the Azores compared to mainland Europe. Only chewing lice host specific to blackcaps were found in the Azores. Louse prevalences were much higher in blackcaps from the Azores compared to those of various mainland populations. Chewing lice are permanent parasites of birds, and for such parasites the parasite island syndrome could be characterized by higher parasite prevalence on the islands compared to the mainland.

A riddle wrapped in an enigma: parasitic lice as clues to the evolutionary puzzle of Sapayoa (Aves).

Parasites can provide powerful insights into host evolution and biogeography. The bird Sapayoa aenigma, the only Neotropical member of the otherwise Old World clade Eurylaimides, has long puzzled ornithologists due to its phylogenetic placement and uncertain biogeographic origin. We investigated the evolutionary origin of a chewing louse in the genus Myrsidea found on Sapayoa. Using genome-wide data from 91 Myrsidea specimens from oscine, suboscine and non-passerine hosts, we reconstructed a global phylogeny to evaluate hypotheses about the origin of Sapayoa and its parasite. [Technic for the collection of Mallophaga from live birds].

The author describes his technique of collecting Mallophaga on live birds (chiefly Passeres, size like sparrow or blackbird). The description comprises the collecting of Mallophaga and the thorough examination of the Mallophaga infestation typical of the host. By these examinations valuable information about biology and ecology of the biting lice species can be obtained. The examinations can be combined with the ringing of the birds. Whereas Ischnocera of one host usually allow qualitative and quantitative determination, Amblycera (with the exception of Ricinus) do not always. Considering the
