AIDS/HIV: implications for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Great strides have been made in the past year in uncovering the pathogenesis of AIDS/HIV, in administering certain drugs to retard the course of AIDS/HIV, in allaying the concerns of the general public, and in dispelling the many myths regarding AIDS/HIV. ASHA's Committee on Quality Assurance has provided this update as a result of obtaining the most current information from CDC and related AIDS/HIV literature. Human service providers are not at high risk of getting AIDS/HIV as a result of their work with clients, even if they regularly care for persons with AIDS/HIV (American College Health A

Perspectives of speech-language pathologists on the use of telepractice in schools: the qualitative view.

Telepractice in speech-language pathology shows the potential to mitigate the current shortage of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) available to serve a growing number of persons with communication disorders. Since a majority of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certified SLPs work in schools and the population of communicatively impaired clients in schools continues to grow, research into the use of telepractice in the educational setting is warranted. This article reports upon the perspectives of SLPs regarding the use of telepractice in school settings. In-depth qualitat…

Guidelines for the delivery of speech-language pathology and audiology services in home care.

Due to changing demographics, consumer preference, and priorities of the total health care delivery system, home care services are increasingly vital to the safety, well-being, and quality of life of many people. Consequently, the number of persons who need home-based speech-language pathology and audiology services is increasing. These guidelines cover the professional service components and related aspects of the home care model. It is ASHA's position that home-based speech-language pathology and audiology services should be conducted by certified (and licensed where applicable) speech-langu

Comprehensive Audiometric Analysis of Hearing Impairment and Tinnitus After Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy in Survivors of Adult-Onset Cancer.

PURPOSE: Cisplatin is widely used but highly ototoxic. Effects of cumulative cisplatin dose on hearing loss have not been comprehensively evaluated in survivors of adult-onset cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Comprehensive audiological measures were conducted on 488 North American male germ cell tumor (GCT) survivors in relation to cumulative cisplatin dose, including audiograms (0.25 to 12 kHz), tests of middle ear function, and tinnitus. American Speech-Language-Hearing Association criteria defined hearing loss severity. The geometric mean of hearing thresholds (0.25 to 12 kHz) summarized over…

Evidence-Based Systematic Review: Effects of Speech-Language Pathology Treatment for Individuals With Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion.

PURPOSE: In this article, our goal was to determine the state of the evidence and the effect of speech-language pathology (SLP) treatment for individuals with paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM). METHOD: The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's National Center for Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders searched 22 electronic databases using key words related to PVFM, speech or voice treatment, and behavioral intervention for articles published through July 2013. Identified articles were systematically evaluated to assess the quality of the evidence using a modification …

Diagnoses of the human response pattern, communicating: a proposal for revision.

The authors present an analysis of the concept of communication, and propose a revision of NANDA's taxonomic human response pattern communicating, and its nursing diagnosis, impaired verbal communication. The authors recommend that the definitions of the human response pattern and its diagnosis be modified to incorporate facets other than verbal emissions. The addition of new defining characteristics and related factors also should be considered. New defining characteristics could include modifications of criteria of the American Speech and Hearing Association, highlighting disturbances in spe

The Challenge of Listening at Home: Speech and Noise Levels in Homes of Young Children With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to characterize the acoustics of the home environment of young children with hearing loss. Specifically, we aimed to quantify the range of speech levels, noise levels, and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) encountered by children with hearing loss in their homes. DESIGN: Nine families participated in the study. The children with hearing loss in these families were between 2 and 5 years of age. Acoustic recordings were made in the children's homes over one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) using Language ENvironmental Analysis (LENA) recorders. These recordi

Computer-based auditory training (CBAT): benefits for children with language- and reading-related learning difficulties.

This article reviews the evidence for computer-based auditory training (CBAT) in children with language, reading, and related learning difficulties, and evaluates the extent it can benefit children with auditory processing disorder (APD). Searches were confined to studies published between 2000 and 2008, and they are rated according to the level of evidence hierarchy proposed by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) in 2004. We identified 16 studies of two commercially available CBAT programs (13 studies of Fast ForWord (FFW) and three studies of Earobics) and five further ou

Language use in social interactions of school-age children with language impairments: an evidence-based systematic review of treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Pragmatic models were first applied to the treatment of children with language impairment in the late 1970s. Since that time, the study of language use has had considerable impact on language assessment and treatment. Despite the need to address pragmatic language skills clinically, there has been no systematic examination of the efficacy of treatments developed for this purpose. METHOD: In accordance with the evidence-based practice policy agenda, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) convened an ad hoc committee on language use in social interactions in schoo…

[Non-speech oral motor treatment efficacy for children with developmental speech sound disorders].

INTRODUCTION: In the treatment of speech disorders by means of speech therapy two antagonistic methodological approaches are applied: non-ve … pronunciation problems in populations without any neurological alteration of motor functioning. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has advised against its use taking into account the principles of evidence-based practice. The knowledge gathered to date on motor control shows that the pattern of mobility and its corresponding organisation in the brain are different in speech and …

Multidisciplinary Cleft Care.

The history of cleft team care dates back to 1938. The team composition and functionality has changed over the years but maintained the focus of patient-centered care and outcomes based treatment. The American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) established guidelines for multidisciplinary cleft care in 1993 which have been revised and updated as recently as 2022. THe ACPA sets a minimum team composition of a cleft coordinator, surgeon, orthodontist and speech-language pathologist. Access to additional specialists is also required to be considered an approved team. Cleft Teams meet at
