Salinity-mediated enhancement of quaternary ammonium compounds resistance and removal in endophytic bacteria LSE01.

The widespread usage of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) as disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic poses significant environmental risks, such as toxicity to organisms and the emergence of superbugs. In this study, different inorganic salts (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, MgCl2) were used to induce endophytes LSE01 isolated from hyperaccumulating plants. After five generations of cultivation under 80 g/L NaCl, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of LSE01 to QACs increased by about 3-fold, while its degradation extent increased from 8% to 84% for C12BDMA-Cl and 5%-89% for C14BDMA-Cl. Evidence that two alkyl ester quaternary ammonium compounds lack substantial human skin-sensitizing potential.

BACKGROUND: Alkyl ester quaternary ammonium compounds (ester quats) are used extensively in fabric rinse conditioners. It is important to document in the literature the outcome of historical studies that were performed to assess the risk of adverse skin effects associated with their use. OBJECTIVES: (1) To document the outcomes of historical studies performed to evaluate the skin sensitizing potential of two ester quats (the di-[hardened tallow fatty acid] ester of 2,3-dihydroxypropyl-trimethyl ammonium chloride [HEQ] and the dialkyl ester of triethanol ammonium methyl sulfate [TEA-Quat]) and

Effects of quaternary ammonium compounds with 0.1% sodium hydroxide on swine vesicular disease virus.

The effects of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) with sodium hydroxide on swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV), an enterovirus were studied. Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) with 0.1% NaOH showed a stronger effect against SVDV than other QACs with 0.1% NaOH. The effect of DDAC with 0.1% NaOH was strong at 40 degrees C. DDAC was effective against SVDV at pH values around 11.0, but not in the distilled water control. The effect of DDAC with 0.1% NaOH was already observed at 1 min after mixing of the DDAC with SVDV. Observation under an electron microscopy revealed that the probable mec

Quaternary ammonium compound exposure causes infertility by altering endocrine signaling and gametogenesis.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are common substances utilized in cleaners, ophthalmic solutions, swimming pool treatments, cosmetics, and other consumer goods. Previous studies have shown that QAC exposure causes infertility in both male and female mice. Based on these studies, we hypothesized that oral QAC exposure negatively impacts male and female reproduction through changes in physiologic and endocrine mechanisms rather than direct toxicity to gametes. Endocrine disruption was assessed by evaluating luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations in ma

Synergistic antibacterial and biofilm eradication activity of quaternary-ammonium compound with copper ion.

Antibiotics overuse and misuse increase the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, which often leads to the failure of conventional antibiotic therapies. Even worse, the tendency of bacteria to form biofilms further increases the therapeutic difficulty, because the extracellular matrix prevents the penetration of antibiotics and triggers bacterial tolerance. Therefore, developing novel antibacterial agents or therapeutic strategies with diverse antibacterial mechanisms and destruction of bacteria biofilm is a promising way to combat bacterial infections. In the present study, the

Modeling quaternary ammonium compound inhibition of biological nutrient removal activated sludge.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are surface-active organic compounds common in industrial cleaner formulations widely used in various sanitation applications. While acting as effective pathogenic biocides, QACs lack selective toxicity and often have poor target specificity. As a result, adverse effects on biological processes and thus the performance of biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems may be encountered when QACs enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Because of these impacts, there is motivation to screen wastewater influents for QACs and for process engineers to consider t

In vitro antiseptic properties of an ammonium compound combined with denture base acrylic resin.

BACKGROUND: Denture base acrylic resin is easily colonised by oral endogenous bacteria and Candida spp., and eventually by extra-oral species such as Staphylococcus spp., Pseudomonadaceae or members of Enterobacteriaceae. This microbial reservoir can be responsive for denture related stomatitis and aspiration pneumonia, a life-threatening infection especially in geriatric patients. However, the oral and denture hygiene of dependent elderly individuals is extremely poor. OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to determine the per cent of a quaternary ammonium compound heat-polymerised in acrylic

The extraction and analysis of quaternary ammonium compounds in biological material by GC and GC/MS.

An injection port pyrolysis method for the analysis of quaternary ammonium compounds is reported. Identification and confirmation of the analyte was accomplished by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. With minor modifications to pH used and solvent composition, a common ion-pair method of extraction of quaternary ammonium compounds from biological matrices with an iodide counter ion is described. Although the combined extraction-identification methodology was limited to neostigmine, succinylcholine, and paraquat, it should easily be applicable to any of the other compounds examined in this s

[Sensitivity of the cholinoreceptive membrane of Lymnaea stagnalis neurons to mono- and bisquaternary ammonium compounds].

The depolarizing potency of polymethylene-bis-trimethylammonium and alkyl-trimenthylammonium compounds with 3-10 methylene groups was studied on the identified giant central neurons of gastropod mollusc Limnaea stagnalis using intracellular microelectrode technique. The bisquaternary salts with 4-7 methylene groups were inactive while the mononitrogen analogues showed cholinomimetic activity. The similar results were obtained by other authors on Vertebrate skeletal muscles with substances studied. The possible explanations of this fact are suggested.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds and Contact Dermatitis: A Review and Considerations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The recent global pandemic has resulted in increased use of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). Currently, QACs are active ingredients in 292 disinfectants recommended by the US EPA for use against SARS-CoV-2. Among QACs, benzalkonium chloride (BAK), cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), cetrimonium chloride (CTAC), didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), cetrimide, quaternium-15, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and benzethonium chloride (BEC) were all identified as potential culprits of skin sensitivity. Given their widespread utilization, additional research is needed to better classify their derma

Ammonium-adduct chemical ionization to investigate anthropogenic oxygenated gas-phase organic compounds in urban air.

Volatile chemical products (VCPs) and other non-combustion-related sources have become important for urban air quality, and bottom-up calculations report emissions of a variety of functionalized compounds that remain understudied and uncertain in emissions estimates. Using a new instrumental configuration, we present online measurements of oxygenated organic compounds in a U.S. megacity over a 10-day wintertime sampling period, when biogenic sources and photochemistry were less active. Measurements were conducted at a rooftop observatory in upper Manhattan, New York City, USA using a Vocus che

Divergent hypersensitivity responses following topical application of the quaternary ammonium compound, didecyldimethylammonium bromide.

Didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) is a fourth generation dialkyl-quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) that is used in numerous products for its antimicrobial properties. While many QACs have been associated with allergic disease, the toxicity and sensitization of DDAB have not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the irritancy and sensitization potential of DDAB following dermal application in a murine model. DDAB induced significant irritancy (0.0625-2%), evaluated by ear swelling in female BALB/c mice. Initial evaluation of the sensitization potential

X-ray crystallographic and computational studies of quaternary ammonium chloride salt complexes with uranyl-salophen compounds.

This study investigates salophen-UO2 complexes 1 and 2 assembled with four tetraalkylammonium chloride salts of various cation sizes: tetramethyl (TMA), dimethyl-dipropyl (DMDPA), dimethyl-dibutyl (DMDPA), and tetrabutylammonium (TBA). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) and computational analyses such as Hirshfeld surface and DFT analyses and interaction region indicator (IRI) representation provided a comprehensive view on how packing and the overall assembly of the complexes are affected by the size of the ammonium cation and on the interplay among different intermolecular forces resp

The Listeria monocytogenes transposon Tn6188 provides increased tolerance to various quaternary ammonium compounds and ethidium bromide.

Tolerance of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes to sublethal concentrations of disinfectants has been frequently reported. Particularly, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) such as benzalkonium chloride (BC) are often used in disinfectants and also as antiseptics in food industry and hospitals. Recently, we described Tn6188, a novel transposon in L. monocytogenes harbouring the transporter QacH, a molecular mechanism leading to increased tolerance to BC. In this study, we investigated the presence of Tn6188 within the genus Listeria spp. Our screening indicates that the distributio
