Mermaid syndrome with amniotic band disruption.

An association of Amniotic Band Disruption Sequence and Mermaid Syndrome in a newborn having multiple congenital anomalies is being reported. The newborn had aberrant string like tissues attached to the amputed fingers and toes. Adhesions of amniotic bands had disrupted the fetal parts especially anteriorly in the midline, causing multiple anomalies. Apart from these features of Amniotic Band Disruption Sequence, the newborn had complete fusion of the lower limbs by cutaneous tissue, a characteristic of Mermaid Syndrome (Sirenomelia). Associated malformations were anal stenosis, rectal atresia

Median facial cleft in amniotic band syndrome.

Amniotic band syndrome manifests at birth with a variety of malformations ranging from constriction ring to defects incompatible to life, in various parts of the body. Although some theories have been proposed for the development of this syndrome, the exact cause remains unknown. The median facial cleft is an extremely rare manifestation of amniotic band syndrome with a relative paucity of reports available in the literature. Here, we report one such case.

[Early amnion rupture or amniotic band syndrome].

Early rupture of the amnion with resultant oligohydramnios and subsequent development of mesodermal bands between the chorion and the fetus can cause various deformities. The degree of deformity depending on the extent of the band formation and the gestational age at which this occurs. The condition may involve all parts of the fetus and comprizes a spectrum ranging from clinically insignificant small constricting bands on the extremities to large craniofacial and visceral defects which may be fatal and cause abortion. Prenatal diagnosis relies mainly on ultrasonic investigation, and the treat

Uveal coloboma associated with amniotic band syndrome.

A baby girl had constriction bands and digital amputations typical of the amniotic band syndrome, as well as a typical uveal coloboma in a slightly microphthalmic eye. A small, free-floating amniotic band may have lodged in the fetal uveal cleft at 5 to 6 weeks of gestation, preventing closure of the cleft and thus resulting in this first reported instance of an association between amniotic band syndrome and an isolated uveal coloboma.

Amniotic band syndrome: a single-institutional experience.

INTRODUCTION: Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is uncommon. We review our single-institutional experience to define its natural history and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis from a single, tertiary referral center of patients evaluated for and confirmed to have ABS from 1997 to 2012. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients had confirmed ABS. The mean ± SD maternal age was 27.9 ± 5.9 years, and the mean gestational age at diagnosis was 20.7 ± 3.8 months. Oligohydramnios was reported in 4 patients. Eleven patients had membrane disruption, of whom 4 had undergone a prior…

Chorioretinal lacuna in the amniotic band syndrome.

The malformations in the amniotic band syndrome (ABS) are due to entrapment of fetal parts by fibrous band in the amniotic sac. Limbs are most commonly affected followed by craniofacial defects in one third of patients. Ocular defects include corneal leukomas and lid colobomas often contiguous with facial clefts, strabismus, hypertelorism, and microphthalmos. Unilateral chorioretinal defects or lacunae are rare findings in the ABS. We report a female infant with such a lacunar defect along with central nervous abnormalities, and discuss the differential diagnosis and the embryopathic implicati…

The amniotic band syndrome: single-stage correction.

Two cases of amniotic band syndrome treated by single-stage excision of the ring and multiple Z-plasty repair are presented. In both cases the author found the procedure technically easy and clinically safe. No complications were encountered in either case.

Amniotic band syndrome causing fetal head deformity.

Amniotic band syndrome is a rare cause of fetal head deformity. We report a case in which antenatal ultrasound in the first half of pregnancy indicated the presence of a fetal cranial deformity, reported as either anencephaly or encephalocele. At assessment autopsy, disruption of the fetal skull was associated with amniotic band formation. Appropriate genetic counselling can be offered to such patients only when detailed pathological examination of the aborted fetus is made. The recurrence rate of amniotic band syndrome does not warrant amniocentesis in a subsequent pregnancy.

Unusual facio-upper arm band of a fetus mimicking amniotic band syndrome.

Amniotic band syndrome can lead to a wide spectrum of congenital abnormalities including orofacial and visceral defects. It is associated with malformations in truncal, craniofacial regions and the limbs, whereas it sometimes may imitate some genetic disorders. Here, we present an atypical case mimicking amniotic band syndrome with a facio-upper arm band that was having multiple fetal structural abnormalities including scoliosis, bilateral cleft lip and palate, upper limb abnormality, unilateral anophthalmia with contralateral microphthalmia, left hypertrophic kidney and severe ventriculomegal…

Fetoscopic Release of Amniotic Band Syndrome: An Update.

Amniotic band syndrome is a rare condition. There have been few cases reported of fetoscopic band dissection. The aim of this case series is to report 3 cases of fetoscopic treatment for amniotic band syndrome, including indication for surgery, technical aspects, complications and outcomes. Fetoscopic treatment was performed respectively at 23 5/7 , 26 5/7 and 18 3/7 weeks' gestation. Two procedures were performed with a laser fiber through a single trocar whereas one surgery was performed with scissors. In conclusion, fetoscopic release of the amniotic bands in case of amniotic band syndrome …

Amniotic band syndrome in dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a rare disorder which leads to a number of deformities of the fetus body. The treatment depends on the severity of the defect and the extent of the deformity. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old primigravida with a dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA) twin pregnancy was diagnosed during the first-trimester ultrasonography with fetal lower part edema of one twin caused by amniotic bands. A selective termination of the affected fetus was performed. The remainder part of the pregnancy was normal. A healthy newborn was delivered at term. After delivering the placenta, …

Open thoracic meningocele associated with amniotic band syndrome.

We present a case of an infant born with an open thoracic meningocele secondary to an amniotic band. Although there have been several case reports of encephalocele, anencephaly, closed meningocele and a case of tethered cord associated with amniotic band syndrome (ABS), there has yet to be a report of an open meningocele associated with ABS. The patient remained neurologically intact after the repair of his meningocele. His postoperative course was complicated by meningitis with subsequent hydrocephalus necessitating ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement.

[The amniotic band syndrome--report of two cases].

The amniotic band syndrome (ABS) includes intrauterine amputations, syndactyly, fetal disruption, fetal compression deformities and constriction rings associated with disruption of the amniotic membrane. The defects caused by ABS varied from simple digital band constrictions, limb defects to major visceral and craniofacial defects; fetal death may also occur. Because the ABS is a sporadic disorder that may mimic recurrent disorders, such as achondroplasia, anencephaly, Apert's syndrome, etc, it is very important to do appropriate genetic counseling and accurate diagnosis for every infant born …

[Amniotic band syndrome with anencephaly--a case report].

The rare case of a severe amniotic band syndrome associated with anencephaly, hypoplasia of adrenal glands and limb deficiencies is presented and discussed with regard to its probable pathogenesis. Impressive photo- and sonographic material can be shown. Early rupture of amnion seems to be the most probable explanation for this combination of anomalies.
