Background: Penile amputation is an emergency urologic condition requiring immediate attention in order to maximize functional outcomes. Unfortunately, there is limited experience and publication of case reports describing the successful replantation of penis after incomplete amputation, especially in facilities without adequate microsurgical tools and means. We hereby present a case of penile amputation caused by a mechanical grass cutter and a discussion of its surgical management. Case description: A 33-year-old Indonesian male presented to the emergency department with incomplete penile am

BACKGROUND: Conventionally described standard techniques of forequarter amputation may not be suitable for patients presenting with neglected or maltreated very large tumors of the proximal humerus.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with unsalvageable malignant tumors of proximal humerus, who underwent forequarter amputation using a new technique between Jan 2008 to March 2010, were retrospectively analysed. This new single incision anterior approach involves supine positioning of patients, ligation of axillary vessels in the axilla followed by resection of muscles from lateral border and

The reconstruction of facial parts after traumatic amputation is of special interest because of the psychological and functional implications such accidents have on the patient. Most amputations result from dog bites or knife wounds and are often sustained by children and young adults. The amputated part may be an anatomic structure of functional importance (e.g. , the lips) or a static structure of primarily aesthetic importance (e.g. , the ear or nose). Here, the Authors present results in 6 cases of facial amputation reconstructed using microsurgical replantation for upper lip amputation, w

Traumatic ear amputation (TEA) is a complete avulsion of a part or of the total auricular tissue. TEA are rare (only 74 cases have been described in the literature) and their handling is complex. The surgeon's objective is to obtain the best cosmetic result without demolishing the auricular area in order to allow future ear reconstruction in case of replantation failure. Many techniques of ear replantation have been described in the literature during the last 30 years: microsurgical replantation, pocket techniques and reattachment techniques. Microsurgical replantation should be achieved every

This report describes the use of clear plastic bags on vinyl chloride-vinylidine chloride copolymer (also known as S Film) for the postoperative management of amputation stumps. The bags are shrunk to the stump by the application of heat and act as a primary dressing. Their use has been effective in controlling postoperative oedema and infection as well as giving the surgeon direct visual access to the stump without disturbing the wound. A case of a below-knee amputation managed by this method is described.

BACKGROUND: There are very few data currently published on risk factors for early failure of lower extremity amputation procedures.
STUDY DESIGN: All patients from the 2005-2010 American College of Surgeons NSQIP database who underwent isolated lower extremity amputation were included for analysis (excluding patients with earlier operation within 30 days, patients undergoing an open amputation, and patients undergoing another procedure during amputation). Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine predictors of early amputation failure (defined as need for reoperation within 30 da

BACKGROUND: Traumatic amputations are morbid complications of blunt traumatic injury. Given the contaminated nature of these wounds, surgical site infections (SSIs) are frequent in this population. The natural history of these wounds following guillotine amputation is not well described. This study seeks to define the relation between operative technique, timing, and SSI.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using our institutional trauma registry, we obtained data for all patients with an admitting ICD-10 code for an amputation. Those that underwent amputation for non-traumatic indications were excluded.

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is beneficial for decreasing pain following below-knee amputation (BKA). While most current literature describes the principles behind primary TMR, they provide few principles key to the amputation, as the BKA is usually performed by another surgeon. When the BKA and TMR are performed by the same surgeon, it can be performed through the same surgical access as needed for both procedures. The purpose of this article is to describe our anatomically based BKA technique in the setting of planned primary TMR as performed by 3, single, peripheral nerve plastic sur

INTRODUCTION: Pyknodysostosis is congenital osteosclerotic skeletal dysplasia of a rare entity. It is an autosomal recessive disease which presents with short stature and generalized osteosclerosis of skeleton as result of decreased bone turnover. Here, the authors report a case of pyknodysostosis who presented to our emergency room with a pathological fracture in the shaft of the femur for which operative intervention was carried out.
CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old female presented to our emergency room with a history of trivial injury to right thigh region and was diagnosed as fracture in her r

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of distal neurotomy (DN) versus proximal neurotomy (PN) for the surgical management of painful neuromas in amputees and non-amputees, whether used in passive or active treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent surgery for painful traumatic neuromas between 2019 and 2022. DN with neuroma excision was performed at the level of the injury or amputation. PN was performed using a separate proximal approach without neuroma excision. Outcomes included a Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) score and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measuremen

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to compare transfemoral amputation (TFA) to knee disarticulation (KD) as a reamputation level after failed transtibial amputation (TTA) in patients with peripheral vascular disease and/or diabetes.
METHODS: We studied 152 patients undergoing reamputation, 86 TFA and 66 KD, after a failed TTA. The primary outcome was reamputation and reoperation, and secondary outcomes were prosthetic fitting and mortality. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with the outcome.
RESULTS: The reamputation rate was 36% after KD and 15% after TFA ( p =

RATIONALE: Major lower limb amputation (LLA, above the ankle) is performed for people with intractable pain, life-threatening infections, or non-functional limbs. Of 7500 LLAs carried out in England between 2015 and 2018, the majority of these were performed in dysvascular patients. Dysvascularity is the absence of adequate blood supply to maintain a limb's usual function (ischaemia, usually caused by peripheral arterial disease or diabetes mellitus), ultimately leading to pain and tissue injury (ulcers, gangrene, sometimes referred to as tissue loss). Among those who undergo dysvascular LLA,

Neuropathic ulcerations are a common complication in patients with diabetes mellitus. Failure to manage diabetic foot ulcers can lead to devastating consequences in this patient population. There are a variety of approaches that the clinician and surgeon alike can take to prevent morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Likewise, providers are constantly searching for new ways to help improve patient outcomes. We present an innovative technique in the management of cleft wound defects that are common in central ray foot amputations. The case involves a 66-year-old, type 2

Recent cadaver studies have suggested that posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN) may contribute to the sensory innervation of the posterior lower leg. Whether this is clinically relevant may be revealed in patients who underwent below-the-knee amputation (BKA) with monitored anesthesia care (MAC) and peripheral nerve blocks. We performed femoral and sciatic nerve blocks for a 55-year-old male patient who underwent BKA and subsequent formalization surgeries as the main surgical analgesia while providing MAC in the operating room. In both cases, the patient could not tolerate surgical incisio

BACKGROUND: The toe to hand transplantation is a method of reconstruction on the unique or multiple amputations of the fingers. It can be used the whole toe or with certain modifications as a wrap-around flap from the big toe or fingertip. It is a widely accepted option for the thumb.
METHODS: It is a series of patients with amputation of one or more fingers of the hand were operated with second toe to hand transplantation. The survival was evaluated and the sensory recovery by 2-point discrimination.
RESULTS: We practiced 12 transplants, 8 thumb, and 4 in other fingers. Ten were adults and

We aim to describe the results obtained in major amputations (transtibial and transfemoral) of diabetic patients followed with a close combined approach (medical and surgical). We evaluated 37 cases with an average age of 73.55 years. All were admitted in our Diabetology Department where they were monitored and treated in order to reach a new balance concerning cardiac failure, anemia, and other pathologies. Then, the orthopedic surgeons operate choosing an adequate level for amputation and pointing about adequate stump covering, accurate vessel, perineural and periosteal hemostasis, and nerve

BACKGROUND: Advancements in vascular and microsurgery in developed countries have led to fewer major limb amputations.
AIM: This audit of major limb amputations performed at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria, between June 1998 and May 2003, was conducted to find out the indications for amputation and highlight those cases that could be salvageable.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Case notes of all patients who had major limb amputations were examined for patients' age, sex, time of presentation, limb affected, indications for amputation,

The amputation of a single finger, or its part, or more fingers results in functional and esthetic changes in the patient's life. Until 1965 when the first thumb ever was replanted, the treatment of amputated digits had been limited by technical facilities of the medical science. Since 1970s, the development of fine suture materials, microsurgical instruments and the operating microscope has made it possible that replantations have become routine procedures in hand surgery. Both surgical procedures and indication schemes have also evolved. The primary surgical treatment has been standardized t

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infection (SSI) after major lower limb amputation (MLLA) significantly affects function, mobility, morbidity, and mortality, alongside broader impacts on healthcare services. Limited data exist on the incidence, prevention, and management of SSI after MLLA. Improving outcomes and wound healing have been identified as research priorities for patients following MLLA.
METHODS: Surgical Site Infection in Major Lower Limb Amputation (SIMBA) is an international, prospective, collaborative observational study. Data were collected for consecutive patients undergoing MLLA o
