Cytology of secondary vulvar Paget's disease of urothelial origin: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary cutaneous Paget's disease of the vulva is an intraepithelial adenocarcinoma most likely arising from a cutaneous stem cell with sweat gland epithelial differentiation or can be of sweat gland origin. Primary vulvar Paget's disease, however, can be mimicked by an internal noncutaneous neoplasm htat has extended to secondarily involve the vulva. Most commonly, this is due to an anal or rectal adenocarcinoma or a urothelial carcinoma. These malignancies may be detected in a vaginal or vulvar cytologic smear. CASE: An 81-year-old woman with a past history of urothelial carcino

Biodistribution and image characteristics of 124 I-positron emission tomography in dogs with neuroendocrine neoplasia.

Radioactive iodine is frequently used for staging of human thyroid carcinomas. Iodine-124 scans performed using position emission tomography (PET) allow for more precise dosimetry of therapeutic radioiodine. The distribution of I-124 has not previously been described in veterinary medicine. The purpose of this prospective, exporatory, descriptive study is to evaluate the whole-body distribution of I-124 in dogs with suspected thyroid carcinoma. Ten dogs with either a cytologic diagnosis of a neuroendocrine neoplasm or biochemical hyperthyroidism were enrolled in a prospective clinical study. W

Extra-Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor of Prostate.

BACKGROUND: Extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumor is defined as a mesenchymal neoplasm arising from soft tissues outside the gastrointestinal tract. Prostatic extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumor has rarely been noted. CASE REPORT: A 56 year-old man presented with pain in the anal region. A digital rectal examination revealed that the prostate was markedly enlarged with a smooth, bulging surface. Computerized tomography images showed a 6 cm heterogeneous, infiltrative tumor within the prostate gland extending to the trigon of the bladder, left seminal vesicle and rectum. The tru-cut biopsy of

Hypocalcemia following surgical treatment of metastatic anal sac adenocarcinoma in a dog.

A 9 yr old neutered male mixed-breed dog was presented for an anal sac apocrine gland adenocarcinoma with regional nodal metastases. At presentation, ionized calcium was 1.91 mmol/L (NOVA Stat reference range, 1.1-1.3 mmol/L). Surgical excision of the primary tumor and metastatic lymph nodes was performed. Following surgery, symptomatic hypocalcemia was noted. Repeated ionized calcium measurements confirmed hypocalcemia, and hypercalcemia of malignancy panels suggested parathyroid gland suppression as the cause. The calcium normalized with parenteral calcium administration, but calcium later b

Hidradenoma Papilliferum: A Clinicopathologic Study of 264 Tumors From 261 Patients, With Emphasis on Mammary-Type Alterations.

Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP), also known as papillary hidradenoma, is the most common benign lesion of the female anogenital area derived from anogenital mammary-like glands (AGMLG). HP can be viewed conceptually as the cutaneous counterpart of mammary intraductal papilloma. The authors have studied 264 cases of HP, detailing various changes in the tumor and adjacent AGMLG, with emphasis on mammary-type alterations. In many HP, the authors noticed changes typical for benign breast lesions, such as sclerosing adenosis-like changes, usual, and atypical ductal hyperplasia. Almost in a third of c

Use of a spiral rectal diaphragm technique to control anal sphincter incontinence in a cat.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was examined for a mass involving the right anal sac region. CLINICAL FINDINGS: The mass was diagnosed as a fibrosarcoma, and resulted in progressive tenesmus, requiring repeated resection. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Surgical removal of the fibrosarcoma was performed on 4 occasions, including complete resection of the anal sphincter muscles and portions of the rectum. A perineal urethrostomy was required during the third surgical procedure secondary to tumor invasion of the preputial tissues. To reduce involuntary loss of fece

Perianal Hidradenoma Papilliferum Mimicking a Chronic Hemorrhoid: A Case Report.

Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is a rare, benign neoplasm classically originating from apocrine or mammary-like glands. While predominantly presenting in the vulvar region, its occurrence in the perianal location is exceptionally rare and frequently misdiagnosed as hemorrhoidal disease or other localized benign lesions. We present the case of a 50-year-old female patient reporting acute perianal pain following defecation straining, accompanied by the sensation of an asymptomatic perianal mass present for three years. Clinical examination identified a 1.5 cm well-circumscribed, reddish-brown nod

Gene expression of prostaglandin EP4 receptor in three canine carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation mediated by the cyclooxygenase enzymes, specifically their product prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), can result in the development of cancer. PGE2 promotes cell proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis through interaction with its specific receptors (EP1 receptor - EP4 receptor [EP1R-EP4R]). In multiple human cancers, the expression of EP4R is associated with the development of malignancy and a poor prognosis. The expression of EP4R has not yet been evaluated in canine tumors. The aim of this study was to characterize the mRNA gene expression of EP4R (ptger4) in canin

Retrospective Study Evaluating the Outcome and Efficacy of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for the Treatment of Metastatic Abdominal Lymph Nodes in Dogs With Apocrine Gland Anal Sac Adenocarcinoma.

Local treatment for dogs with regional lymph node metastasis secondary to apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma (AGASACA) includes nodal extirpation or radiotherapy. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) may provide a definitive intent treatment option for macroscopic nodal disease when surgery is declined or the disease is deemed inoperable. Twenty-five dogs receiving SBRT to the metastatic sacroiliac lymph nodes were retrospectively evaluated. Dogs were staged according to the previously published TNM staging system with 3 stage IIIa, 14 stage 3b, and 8 stage IV. The overall median sur

Utility of Computed Tomography versus Abdominal Ultrasound Examination to Identify Iliosacral Lymphadenomegaly in Dogs with Apocrine Gland Adenocarcinoma of the Anal Sac.

BACKGROUND: Apocrine gland adenocarcinoma of the anal sac (AGAAS) is associated with high rates of iliosacral lymph node metastasis, which may influence treatment and prognosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) recently has been shown to be more sensitive than abdominal ultrasound examination (AUS) in affected patients. OBJECTIVE: To compare the rate of detection of iliosacral lymphadenomegaly between AUS and computed tomography (CT) in dogs with AGAAS. ANIMALS: Cohort A: A total of 30 presumed normal dogs. Cohort B: A total of 20 dogs with AGAAS that underwent AUS and CT. METHODS: Using co

Carcinoma of the perianal gland and associated structures in 1,2-dimethylhydrazine treated mice.

Male C57BL/Icrf alpha t mice receiving long courses of weekly subcutaneous injections of 8.25 or 12.5 mg/kg, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) developed perianal carcinomas as well as tumours at other sites. Tumours of the perianal gland or its associated hair root sheath and overlying skin included sebaceous gland adenocarcinomas, often with squamous metaplasia, analogous to those in the rat ear, and dysplasia, polyp formation and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). Of 152 mice treated, 88 remained after 30 injections, and 10 out of a total of 14 tumours developed after 30 treatments. Perianal SCC with

A rare case of rectal cancer with perianal metastasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cancer metastasis from colon cancer to an anal fistula is very rare. We herein reported a rare case in which local excision was performed for metastatic anal fistula cancer originating from rectal cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man was referred to our institution with a diagnosis of rectal cancer. He had complained of anal fistula for 5 years. Based on a recent history of cerebral infarction, Hartmann's operation was performed to treat the rectal cancer after the administration of preoperative chemotherapy for 3 months. However, 1 month after Hartmann's operation, the an

Canine Clitoral Carcinoma: A Clinical, Cytologic, Histopathologic, Immunohistochemical, and Ultrastructural Study.

Vaginal and vulvar tumors are uncommon in dogs. Knowledge of canine primary clitoral neoplasia is restricted to a few case reports, and only carcinomas have been reported. Cytologic and histologic features reported in the literature seem to overlap with those of canine apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma (AGASA). Clinical features also recall those of canine AGASA, such as locoregional metastases and hypercalcemia of malignancy (HM). In this study, 6 cases of primary canine clitoral carcinomas (CCCs), with and without HM, were investigated by means of cytology, histopathology, electron micr

Anal duct carcinoma: a report of 5 cases.

Anal duct carcinoma (ADC) is a rare lesion composed of glands undermining non-neoplastic squamous epithelium. We describe the clinicopathologic characteristics and follow-up of 5 cases of ADC. Four definitive cases had tissue available for immunohistochemistry (IHC; CK7, CK20, prostate-specific antigen [PSA], estrogen/progesterone receptors [ER/PR], and p16) and in situ hybridization (ISH) for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV); a fifth case, with a history of ADC, had limited tissue for immunolabeling with only CK7, CK20, and p16. The mean patient age was 69.8 years. All 5 cases were CK7

Evaluation of Serum Acute Phase Protein Concentrations in Dogs with Circumanal Gland Tumours.

The aim of this study was to determine the serum concentrations of acute phase proteins (APPs), including C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp) in dogs with circumanal gland tumours. Investigations were conducted on 39 male dogs of mixed breed. The animals were divided into four groups depending on the degree of tumour malignancy and type of hormones that were dominant in the bloodstream. All measurements of serum APPs were conducted by the use of commercial diagnostic kits. In dogs with benign tumours, the concentrations of each APP decreased during therapy, whi

Humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy in nude mouse model of a canine adenocarcinoma derived from apocrine glands of the anal sac. Biochemical, histomorphometric, and ultrastructural studies.

A serially transplantable tumor line, designated CAC-8, has been developed in nude mice from a spontaneously occurring adenocarcinoma of the anal sac from a hypercalcemic dog. Nude mice with transplanted CAC-8 developed hypercalcemia (mean 16.3 +/- 0.6 mg/dl) and moderate hypophosphatemia without bone metastasis. Urinary excretion of calcium and hydroxyproline were increased 6- and 2.3-fold, respectively. Urinary excretion of cAMP was moderately increased but phosphorus excretion was not significantly altered. Serum 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol was increased significantly in tumor-bearing nud
